None of the above Nier: Automata, Overload, and Valkyria Chronicles 4 had more nominations then any of those games. At least one nomination for Kingdom Come and a bunch of honorable mentions for Yakuza 0. Since there was no remasters allowed there wasn't really much of a contest in the AAA department. Someone had to scrounge up a list for all the games that were released this year and I'd already forgotten most of them except Darkest Dungeon.

Shows that you neither played this game nor played the Vita version because aside from some key plot points they are very different all around, from combat being overhauled to something bland and pointless to character motivations being rewritten in the worst way to a whole narrative-breaking side-plot with the villains and even the animation is WORSE and the ending is much more limp with the new characters barely having any say and feeling like forgotten DLC with a few voiced lines tossed in which no one reacts to because they didn't re-record lines to fit them in at the latter third.

That's the perfect description of them. I was perplexed when watching the first half of KLK because the whole thing was SO on-the-nose, with literal battle school and evil student council and the characters being redeemed in flashbacks during fights and everything, I thought it would do something different compared to most shonen anime and give me a reason to care about the characters beyond some troglodyte attachment to the archetypes they represent.
I'm not asking for incredible writing here, but I just want the characters to develop in ways which are different from the stuff we saw in DBZ nearly 40 years ago. The crazy animation really drew me in, and it made me think the narrative would be equally as insane in execution, rather than simply a by-the-numbers shonen plot with wacky set dressing.

Do you mean visually or the whole package, personality and all? The former I think you could argue but it would be an uphill battle, the inconsistent style of all of their works can often put otherwise appealing characters in really ugly lights. Their personalities on the other hand perfectly encapsulate generic and hone in on the most unlikable aspects of some characters that just makes them unpleasant and disgusting.
I don't want to pick a Trigger example, but choose your own to compare it to, but I'd like to bring up Riko from Made in Abyss who on the surface appears as a highly analytical, air headed and very confident. All positive traits on a very cute character but when faced with challenges doesn't become some ego driven power house but rather is forced to face the reality she's just a scared 12 year old girl who doesn't want to be alone in a world that will kill her in an instant. It's not particularly deep or complicated characterization but compared to any Trigger character who is either annoying or a stereotype is a world apart in how interesting they are.

Visually and in terms of VA, though I did like some of personalities as well.
Riko works in her own setting because the point is to take the usual "dungeon exploration" trope and make it more realistic. Suddenly, it's not all fun and games, you and your friends kill monsters that go poof and looting equipment and shekels off their bodies. Exploring such a hostile environment is dangerous and lethal and only the mad or ambitious would dare.
It's also why so many mecha stories fail when they try to ape Evangelion. Eva works because Shinji is just one more fucked up person among a cast of fucked up people that ultimately fail because of their own personal psychological trauma.
Other mecha shows tend to make the protagonist some sort of Shinji expy while everyone else around him is either some heroic archetype or a functional individual and it just all goes to shit.
A setting built on a ridiculous premise can work when it features bigger than life characters. KLK fails specifically because it builds up the ridiculous premise and then injects some "crawling in my skin" tier angst into the story. The big reveal that the main antagonist for much of the plot had been sexually abused by her own mother just clashes horribly with everything else going on in the story, the visuals and music.

I memory holed that part of it, but it's coming back now. It doesn't help that the show spends its climax much earlier on and the final battle is kind of a joke. Really just falls on its face flat but the whole thing gets exceeingly sloppy once Nui is introduced, feels like they changed a story board director or something.

My guess is that they had this idea of half a story, blew their load early on and then had to scramble to fill the rest of the episodes with something. Seems to happen a lot of with Trigger. They tend to have interesting ideas, good artists and designers, but the writing team fails time and again, especially at writing a proper conclusion to their plots.

fallout 76, battlefield v, or metal gear survive are probably worse games, but dynasty warriors is the biggest insult. take a linear arcadey mission based beatemup with the selling points of being 1 badass in a giant army, fighting another giant army, while singlehandedly bringing your army from imminent defeat, to a victory. and turn it into an open world shit stain, with enemies spread out everywhere so the armies you fight are tiny, mandatory tutorials, crafting, constant cutscenes, waypoints, unskippable dialogue, and missions checklists.
they turned it into assassins creed.

I've missed a few points there, such as permabanning people for trying to initiate the shitty pvp or calling people faggots ingame, but this is just the tip of the iceberg of why fallout 76 is the biggest blunder this year. And it keeps on giving, and I personally cant wait for the legitimate lawsuits to start rolling in on some of the illegal shady shit they pulled with this game.
