What makes a game /comfy/?

Can autists experience /comfy/?

Seems like a lot of modern games try to be too grimdark or difficult to actually qualify as being /comfy/.

22fcaa  No.15874696

in my opinion grimdark and comfy can coexist. in STALKER, for example, you might fight your way through a horrifying hellscape filled with radiation, monsters and the ruins of a town, then find a couple friendly guys playing harmonica around a campfire. shadow hearts covenant is another one: a dark, depressing setting in alternate-history ww1 i think it was ww1 that still manages to have comfy spots where it feels good to just hang out

if you ask me more games need to have a town- or base-building mechanic, because my own personal type of autism means if i can spend time customizing a town, finding ways to improve my economy, keep my gates safer or just plain get more people in there i spend more time doing that than anything

the fact that when you look away from the screen for even a moment, gaze around you and your surroundings, you this feeling of dread and helplessness washes over you and you wish you could actually be in the game instead

>what makes a game /comfy/

Atmosphere

>Can autists experience /comfy/

Autists are one of the few groups who can truly experience comfy because they actually invest themselves into the games that they play.

Now defining what actually makes a game's atmosphere comfy is the hard part because it's entirely subjective.

Shadow Hearts I and II are good examples of situational comfy; the plots are rather dark and the general world dreary and dangerous with all manner of fucked up thing's lurking in the shadows, but a fair amount of the towns (the ones that don't have their own demented things looking to kill) still have a sense of coziness and safety to them, despite some being set explicitly at night. Perhaps it's the juxtaposition, and music too, that makes them work as well as they do, even beyond the usual comfy most JRPG towns go for.

>cooking

>warm clothes

>sleeping

>environmental noises

>sleeping

Games that take place in a realistic setting are nice, like you're some person in their mid 20s going about a town or city doing various tasks. needs to have ambiance, lighting and weather changes. like the start of half life where you are just some scientist or playing GtA iii but obeying the law just driving and walking around town

Mechanics that are challenging but not excessively stressful/fast paced or too slow, unchallenging and dumb (think of jrpgs).

If a game is too easy it can't be comfy, it is boring, and boredom feels uncomfy. If a game is too challenging and punishing then you're adrenaline will be too high to get comfy (think sc2 or sfv against tough opponents)

Cheerful or relaxing music is important.

cheerful and colorful backgrounds and characters also.

For me it's KEIO FLYING SQUADRON (sega cd)

Pretty sure most Kirby games are easy, and people seem to find those comfy (when they're not delving into horror moments).

Base building/home building does help a lot. Anything you can make yourself and call if your own.

Building my own house in Morrowind's editor, then decorating it with all the stuff I'd looted and putting up a bunch of soft light lanterns was max comfy.

Dark Souls is pretty comfy.

Modern games are the Dark Souls of gaming.

They're expensive and not very enjoyable. Thus, you have to be a masochist to play or enjoy them. Therefore, it's difficult to not get bored and the barrier to entry high.

194e46  No.15882185

But Dark Souls is the prime example of why modern gaming is bad?

> intentionally frustrating to new players

> requires you to do research outside of the game to understand how its mechanics work.

> punishes you because it can.

> heavily focused on mechanical difficulty

> shoehorns in random pvp and co-op elements that are required to fully enjoy the game

I couldn't play it for more than an hour at a time without being frustrated because I was probably stuck for 5 hours on the same boss who took 10 minutes to walk to and would instantly kill me whenever i entered the room. I eventually just said "this game is fundamentally broken" and never went back to it.

>A soothing soundtrack

>Calming and immersive atmosphere

>No real immediate gameplay obligations in the moment of comfiness

Am autist, can confirm both. You can also have grimdark games that meet this criteria just fine. It only needs to do these 3 things, most of which get their comfy from a little side activity that involves tending to plants/crops whatever or fishing or some kind of other proactive recreational activity that doesn't involve combat.

>modern gaming

>punishing the player for mistakes

Are you retarded? One of the reasons for Dark Souls' popularity was bucking the trend of modern games coddling the player.

>stuck for 5 hours on the same boss who took 10 minutes to walk to and would instantly kill me

That's a yes to being retarded then.
