Chris Huelsbeck just put out a concept album for an imaginary Turrican 4, featuring new original Amiga tracks which are actually composed around in-game limitations, so the in-game tracks only have 3 voices to keep one voice free for the SFX. But the main theme is made with TFMX, which sound great

You can play the first two Turrican games on an Amiga emulator called WinUAE, though a lot of people say the original C64 versions of Turrican 1 and 2 are even better since they were actually developed by Trenz whereas the Amiga versions were ports. Though the C64 games don't have the same kickass Huelsbeck music, so pick what suits you. There's also a freeware Turrican fangame called T2002 with loads of user-made custom levels if that suits your fancy, and another freeware Turrican clone called Hurrican which looks more fancy overall

I only ever played super turrican on the SNES, tell me, are the rest of the games good?

The console Turricans are more linear in structure, where Turrican 3 and Super Turrican feel more like a more straightforward Turrican game (though still fine on their own) whereas Super Turrican 2 barely feels like a Turrican game and more like a Mode 7 showcase.

Turrican 1/2 for the Amiga/C64 play more like Contra but with secret-filled semi-open levels which are very fun to explore. The only weird-ass part is the level timers which will always cost you a life or two because it takes way longer to beat a level on your first try than the timer will allow, but then you get tons of 1-ups if you find the secrets, so it kind of balances out.

I've been meaning to play turrican for a while but the whole c64 vs amiga thing kinda confuses me, does the amiga port changes some stuff from the c64 version or what?

The C64/Amiga versions have some differences in level design, some people argue the C64 levels are better, though everyone agrees the Amiga version has the better music and graphics. I don't think the differences are that major anyways.

So how about that GUNLORD?

It's actually getting a port to the Switch now that the developers are finished farming money off NeoGeo collectors.

>are they different or are exactly the same?

Oh boy.

Turrican 2 did get ported to the SNES/Genesis by some outsourced team, but then some publisher had the idea to turn Turrican 2 into a movie tie-in video game for some Jean Claude-van Damme movie called Universal Soldier, so they replaced the main character's sprite with some marine, alongside a lot of other enemy sprites. So the first boss you fight isn't a giant robot, but a giant Dolph Lundgren instead. They cut out the shmup stages and replaced them with stages of their own to make the game fit the story of the movie more, but these new stages are pretty damn bad. The music doesn't hold a candle to the original Amiga version, or even what Huelsbeck would go on to do later with Mega and Super Turrican. That said the gameplay itself does play identically to the original, it's just that the stages, graphics, and music were butchered.

Turrican 1 did receive a decent port to the Genesis (by the same team behind the Universal Soldier thing), but the music was also butchered, so they just raised the volume of the SFX to cover it up. Switching weapons in the Genesis version is awkward too, so you're better off just playing the Amiga version for both games.

what about turrican 3/mega turrican, how's that one compared to 1 and 2

Pretty good, though it's more linear and not as open-ended

Played Amiga Turrican and it's not bad and the music is very good, but Contra is better. You have a healthbar that quickly drains while touching enemies (no invulnerability phase). I don't like having a healthbar in that type of game, I want to precisely know what can kill me on contact and not guess. The healthbar thing would still be OK if emptying it resulted in a short invulnerability phase with anything after that killing you.

Really liked the look of that one, and you have a grappling-arm thing.

There is also another Turrican of sorts. Trenz made Rendering Ranger (mix of run & gun and shmup levels) for Super Famicom as basically a one-man team. Saw a playthrough. Game looks technically competent, but bland.

I prefer a tightly arranged roller coaster like Contra and don't really get the appeal of exploration like in the early Turricans. Exploring a level is only exciting the first time around. Perhaps that style of Turrican would benefit from a modest dose of randomization.

>In 2013, NG:DEV TEAM aimed to release the game on 3DS and Wii U through a crowdfunding campaign, with some particularly interesting rewards for backers such as a Gunlord arcade stick for the Wii U (although this did require a humongous €1,000 pledge to get). Unfortunately, however, the project was cancelled in the very same month that the crowdfunding effort went live, never to be seen again.

Wow you have to be a real fucking sucker to pay one thousand euros for what is essentially a sub 100 us dollar job
