Sonic's shoes in Sonic Adventure 2 were an advertisement for real shoes. They saw Tony Hawk and wanted to copy the grinding mechanic, only it would just be on his shoes since Sonic doesn't use a board (except when he actually does at the beginning of the first level, though to be fair there's a similar segment in Sonic Adventure 1 based on a cutscene from Sonic 3). Anyway, once they came up with the grinding shoes, they realized there actually was a real product designed for that, and changed Sonic's shoes slightly to advertise for them, while also having billboards for them in the first level of the game, which took place in a city. I guess the license extended to the Gamecube remake, but the HD rereleases a decade later changed all the billboards. Pretty sure Sonic's shoes still look the same, but they don't point out that they're Soap (TM) shoes.

Remember when advergames were actually good? 7up has like three games and they're all pretty good. Cool Spot deserves better than just being a dead mascot.
