Why recommend xenoblade? It only runs above 3 fps on an N3DS and running it on dolphin at 1080P is objectively better.

The best starting point is p3rd or 3U because those are classic monster hunter. 4U is the current pinnacle of difficulty and endgame content (not counting frontier bullshit). Generations ultimate has a tiny amount more monsters but a less robust endgame.

Honorable mention to freedom unite for being the old gold standard, but frankly I'd never play it again over 3rd and 4th gen games. World is garbage dogshit and if you buy it you should be culled for the same reason wild hogs are.

Try Kid Icarus also. Shit's great.

Yes they do, but all the good players left for XX and FU, now it's mostly people who don't mind triple carting and craft armor solely for looks, so if that shit irritates you stick to single player like i did.

Senran Kagura 2, grab all the DLC as well, people sell you on this franchise with ass and tits but this game in particular is a great beat em up, the DLC turns it into a SHMUP and a model viewer that lets you dress any girl in different outfits and customize their 3 sizes, allowing for shit like oppai loli mirai in a string bikini.

Ace Combat Assault Horizon+, a remake of the second game in the franchise, it handles like shit unless you have a N3DS and the PSP games were better, but it's still worth playing.

Kirby Planet Robobot, perhaps the best kirby game in fucking years, lacks content though, the main game is 8 hours long and you can clear metaknight's campaign, the arena and the true arena in 3 hours tops.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, the last monhun game before the franchise went to shit.

Pokemon Ultra Sun, it has cute girls, you can play dress up with your loli, has a good soundtrack and the postgame is decent, if you're gonna play a 3DS pokemen game make sure it's this one, it's the least awful.

Rune Factory 4, a comfy action RPG, has an UNDUB and "lesbian" patch which lets you play as the girl while still being able to romance the girls.

The best thing about the 3DS is the fact that you can emulate DS, NES and SNES games on it.

Speaking of 3DS though, I recently got one cheap. OFW on it looks to be within workable parameters for CFWing, but I have to ask, considering it looks like there's hacks all the way up through 10.9, would updating from 10.8 (what the system is currently on) to 10.9 have any benefit to doing in terms of CFW end-functionality? Seems like 10.8 would require a flash cart or soldering, while 10.9 would use "Frogminer", going off what I'm reading.

I was thinking of doing that since my old DS one's been borked for a while. I assume that the system is only apt to read DS from the intended backwards compatibility (and thus requires a cart of some kind), but can pirated 3DS games just be stored via SD?

They fit that section better than they would fit into the mold of a traditional JRPG, though I guess they would fit more into an ARPG section more than anything. If "JRPG" only means "RPG" made by the Japanese then its pointless to even have a JRPG section

Going to take some time to at least put together an initial thing; not sure if this thread will still be here when done, but I'll get started.

JRPG encompasses ones with real time combat as well. Just because Final Fantasy standard turn-based/ATB are considered the stereotype, that doesn't keep stuff like Xenoblade, Tales, Kingdom Hearts, classic-era Mana, .hack, Avalon Code, etc from being grouped under the same banner. Though, one can rightly argue a gameplay, or at least combat, distinction should be made.

Could just consider it an "RPG" section, but I wager the ones made in Japan would still outnumber what western ones might be on the system. Having descriptions written from those that had recommended them in the first place present would go a good ways towards dealing with that (as well as also be a boon for other non-RPGs as well), but those both aren't present, and I wager it's a fat chance that anyone's apt to invest that much effort to improving it from that angle at this point.

Dragon Quest to me is sort of the quintessence of what a traditional JRPG looks like. I would hesitate to call something like Nier/Nier Automata a JRPG when I could call it an ARPG instead and it would fit better, same thing for something like Dark Souls

Yes, but that would be very dismissive of the often incredible differences between games, unless people were willing to write in descriptions like you said but putting the burden on people tends to peter out quickly since people are rather lazy and relying on others to do that kind of work usually ends up with your project being shit

I still don't get why Atlus bothered to give a pair of DS games the remake treatment on a system still capable of playing DS games anyhow. I mean, I get why (more profit), but it wasn't like either needed a remake. Both being well liked in their original form, rather than games with potential to be good but just weren't. I guess that's the unfortunate trend for remakes these days though; updating popular games that were already good and apt to sell well again, over ones that could stand another go around.

That's on you then. Just because a regional classification has a stereotype to how they play or handle, that doesn't mean everything that falls under it has to abide by it. And there's a notable difference between real time JRPGs like those and something like Zelda, DMC, and other action/adventure games, unless you consider those "RPGs" as well on grounds of roleplaying a single character's adventure even without stats or whatever being factored in.

If it works better, I can specify underneath the titles for the games in the category as to what combat style they use.

Would you call Dragon's Crown or other vanillaware games JRPGs then? They are made in Japan, and have leveling, stats and items.

I would be very very hesitant to do so myself, because those two basic traits aside it hardly feels like it fits the JRPG mold at all
