Anon, most of what I was saying draws primarily *from* Doom.

Sure, the chainsaw can be a fun gimmick weapon or a good last resort tool, but in an entire playthrough of an episode, I could count the times I use it on one hand.

Sniper rifles. Seems like every shooter I played, everyone was tripping over themselves to be the one who gets to camp with the sniper and fish for headshot.

I always got much more out precision shooting on the go with a revolver or magnum.

Brutal Doom (aka Zoomer Edition) makes you swing it around, and it causes some really satisfying dismemberment, especially enjoyable to use on giblets on the floor.

Unfortunately, the sound it makes is so fucking goddamn obnoxious just remember the sound it makes causes my ears to flinch in pain. Not to mention because of the increased aggression and damage of most enemies using it will usually kill you in seconds.

39f9b4  No.15859475

Same, anon. I really don't enjoy freezing myself to a single position, shrinking my FOV and making myself totally vulnerable to attacks from literally anywhere except directly in front of me just to manually aim from far away.

I only ever really use them to thin out crowds of enemy npcs before I go in there with a regular weapon.

Pitiful. I'd probably have to say throwing knives, most games they either gravitate to someone's face or it's a what-the-fuck-is-this-arc thing. About the only two games I've liked them were SoF and XIII.

>30 rounds

>usually sound like shit

>"versatile"

>always comes in three exact configurations

>shoots fast, baby damage, absolutely uncontrollable, usually a FAMAS or Skorpion EVO/Uzi

>ok rate of fire, ok damage, easy to use, AR-15s and MP5s

>shoots slower than Mark finishes a Sonic game, hiroshima-tier damage, recoil kicks directly up, AKs and the UMP

>even if it's a scifi game, you'll always have AK, AR15, Uzi and P90 derivatives

>most shitters use them exclusively in multiplayer games because they're always in the meta and easy to use

As much as I do like guns, fucking Christ alive, it's excessive and wasteful to have 15-30 weapons per category if they all perform pretty much the same.

>>15859493

The Ukrainian guy making the WHAPSH sound effect with his mouth because they were too lazy to figure out a sound for a throwing knife is what really sells them. That, and the fact that they punch straight through clothing, armor, helmets using ukrop Metro magic.

I don't like or hate assault rifles in vidya. Generally they're really just workhorse weapons. Nothing too exciting.

Considering that most of the time, they'll be the weapon you'll be using most just because you have to, it doesn't surprise me that devs would wanna perk it up a bit.

ea4b0a  No.15859776

Lmg's arent that popular of a choise to use by players but they're usually added to games.

Why it is so I have no idea since they always end up being assault rifles but worse. For the ammo capacity you have to sacrifice accuracy and good recoil coupled with longer reload times making an assault rifle just an all around better choice, not to mention many times their damage is on par with assault rifles even with lmg's chambered in rounds like 7.62x51 and 7.62x54

I don't know if this is the case in the redux version, but in the vanilla Metro 2033 all weapons take armor into consideration, depending on their strength. Throwing knives wont even kill them if you hit their ammo pouches. It's extremely obvious when trying to stealth kill russians with those huge helmets, since you actually need to hit them in their vision slit or under the neck to get a head shot.

I'm specifically pissed off because Battlefield 4 had twentysomething weapons of each category and there were at least five of those, and out of all of those, there were maybe ten or eleven worthwhile guns and the rest were either just bad weapons, or inferior clones of those ten or eleven guns.

>>15859864

In Redux/LL if the knife makes contact, the guy just flops over dead, regardless of where you hit him. But only out of stealth. Their armor magically activates as soon as they see you.

Pistols can be pretty fun to use as a "bragging rights" weapon when you want to feel like a badass by mowing down enemies with the weakest gun. I also appreciate their purpose as a low-tier starter weapon. I think games that give you an assault rifle as your starting weapon are pretty obnoxious, except for certain war games.

Specialty pistols that have special perks or do extra damage, though? Those are some of my favorite vidya weapons.

L4D2's chainsaw was pretty satisfying to use to be honest with you. It was something of a straight upgrade from the regular melee weapons in that you didn't have to swing it around, it functioned just like the chainsaw in Doom 2, wander into a group of enemies with the left mouse button held down and you're in for an orgy of dismemberment. On that note, Fallout:NV had a similar set up for its chainsaw, no fuel meter though, you just had to keep an eye on the weapon condition.

Depends on the game. Some, a pistol is supposed to be a sidearm mainly for when you can't afford to reload your main weapon. Those games it's usually fucking awful, but for the last couple bullets to finish an enemy it has its uses.

Other games, and this is especially common in those with upgrades or RPG elements, the pistol is often the most overpowered weapon. In those games it usually sits between the assualt rifle and sniper rifles, providing an ideal balance especially in games where you need to conserve your ammo.

94109d  No.15864114

>>15859472

The best and most fun snipers are the ones that penetrate multiple enemies and don't have some stupidly absurd accuracy penalty for not using aim down sights garbage, so you can turn it into a close quarters heavy weapon and play a high risk high reward dance with them. Warframe bows (before they shit on the whole game, redesigned the core UI again and removed the accidental movement mechanic that made the game fast) used to be fun as hell. EDF has the stringer rifle and even better, the least used dash canceling weapon in the fencer's inventory is a penetrating sniper cannon. You can substitute the hand cannon for the usual reflector shield for dash canceling, sacrificing fencer's incredible defensive potential making you fragile and having to deal with aiming with the dash momentum affecting your shots, but it's incredibly effective at kiting or breaking through enemy lines if you pull it off.

Games where I used the pistol over everything else:

>Halo: CE

>Resistance 3

>Rainbow Six Vegas 1/2

>>15862982

>grenades

Yeah, these are rarely satisfying. I wish Halo CE grenades were in everything. I love how the explosion is taller than it is wide, and enemies really fly when caught in the large radius.

My own biggest gripe in terms of poorly implemented weapons?

MELEE ATTACKS

This is yet another area where I wish more games were like Halo CE (including every other Halo game). The animations look like they would do serious damage (overhead shotgun bash in particular), and the impact sounds are a really deep thwack. The damage melee does is pretty high, and blood mists out in huge clouds if the enemy has no shield. The instant kill from behind feature is satisfying, as well, and very useful when dancing with elites.

Other games with enjoyable melee:

>Titanfall2

Usually an instant kill, and enemies go flying.

>Breakdown

>Chronicles of Riddick

>Condemned

These three ought to have good melee, though, since they were built around it.

Worse still is games' dedicated melee weapons. They're rarely fun. Left4Dead did them alright, but enemies are bit weightless in that. Shadow Warrior also had a weightlessness problem, where the enemies may as well be cardboard.

Grenades.

>the controls are usually retarded

>the mechanics are too slow for the game If mw2 had something right, it was this. One keypress to throw a frag/flash after which you immediately switch back to the weapon you had in hand, doesn't take much more than a second.

>there is no way to adjust the throwing power (apart from an overhand/underhand throw if the devs are generous enough)

>the (lethal) blast radius and lethality overall are pretty much always cucked beyond anything reasonable

>what is shrapnel

>what is concussion

>what are enclosed spaces

>the ground textures are so shitty that you cannot see the grenade after it has landed two meters from you in plain sight

>if the game hs FF, you bet there is always that one retard who repeatedly manages to kill half the team with a single grenade

<oops sorry dead nade

May I remind you that Doom is the embodiment of masculinity, next-level genius. You're killing Demons at 200mph with a double-barrel shotty with the power of Jesus behind it. Halo rode off of it's story. It's a slow-paced, shitty FPS that introduced regenerating health; a system for HP that's just... eugh. And I'm not saying story-based FPS are bad. I'm saying Halo is bad. Half-Life was a lot better altogether, and it can be argued it rode off of it's story. Half-Life had puzzles, exploration, fucking physics. Halo just pushed you from objective to objective.

>mfw people think halo is objectively better than doom

>inb4 MUH YOU'RE NOT A REAL GAMER IF YOU DON'T PLAY HALO

P.S: I don't even have the new Doom. PC too shit to run it. I made several Doom wads and pk3s in the past.

>Halo rode off of its story

No one played Halo for the story. Lore was icing.

>introduced regenerating health

Health doesn't regenerate, the shield does. I'm sure Halo isn't the first game to have an overshield.

>Half-Life had puzzles, exploration, fucking physics

Halo has exploration and physics. And things Half-life doesn't have.

>Halo just pushed you from objective to objective.

From encounter to encounter.

>"descendant of BJ who killed nazis".

Yeah he killed Nazis. Boo-fucking-hoo. It's implied that it was Old BJ who was the ancestor to Doomguy, not New BJ. So at least it had a semblance to masculinity.

>"like this because always run"

>implying always run is bad

>"hurrr I can't tell the difference between health and shield"

Well what's the difference? If you play SWAT then you get insta-headshott'd. Shields make up for at least 75% of your total health pool and resistance to attacks, and that regenerates. And it placed the groundwork for CoD's health system.

>complains about a single word

at least i'm not dropping to reddit standards. be happy i'm not saying shit like "halo is really manly" wait shit

examples? the only exploration is the Skulls, really. Half-Life has secret cabinets and entrances.

>well what does it have that every other shooter that came around hasn't had

There was no shooter on consoles that controlled well, or looked as good. To this day the game still has a nice aesthetic I prefer over the cluttered shit of today across all platforms, and the handling is as good as anything. The way the enemy types and AI shape the firefights is also rarely paralleled by any game, regardless of genre. Most shooters since are still playing catch-up with Duck Hunt.

>Health

Ok, effectively it's a minor health recovery. What's wrong with that as a mechanic? I agree full health recovery is crap because it turns retreating into an invincibility cheat, but an overshield makes Legendary difficulty possible, and encourages heroics you would otherwise be unable to pull off. The whole mechanic also ties in with being a supersoldier in power armor.

>examples?

I didn't bother providing examples, because saying "such and such game has this and that" has zero bearing one whether or not the game is well designed. If Doom had a good story, would it be a shit game because there aren't any puzzles like Half-Life?

>the Skulls

That's a Halo 2 thing. Halo 1 has huge maps with a variety of approaches, exploits, glitches, and secret stashes - many of which are reliant on the physics to discover - that you'll find if you explore.

Axes and Giant Hammers. Always seems pretty shitty compared to the more standard weapons like Swords, even if swords are more generic, a lot of Axe wielding doesn't feel right.

No, you're right. Magic in a lot of games is deliberately made to be slow, ineffectual and cost a lot of resources to use. I guess under the assumption that if it isn't heavily over-balanced it would be all anyone uses.

Magic in a game should make you feel like you're a walking howitzer with tons of fun tricks to go along with it, but a lot make you feel like an old person trying to cross a busy road.

The chainsaw in GTA San Andreas is pretty fun to use, as it can fuck up cars, and it pretty much instakills any NPC's you hit with it. Plus, Carl does swing it around if you attack while stationary, but if you start attacking while walking, he'll just hold it out in front of him.

The chainsaw incurs stun aka. pain animation every time you hit with it. That's what makes it viable. It's bad against multiple enemies, but great in narrow hallways where you might be trapped.
