We may always have emulation as the best alternative but sometimes we just like to keep the original stuff around and better if it actually works, recently I have seen you can even replace the disc reader for a card reader on a Dreamcast, there is the whole capacitor replacements for PC Engine and some other tricks for a handful of consoles.

So what do you keep around people? do you mod the consoles in one way or another?

Daily reminder to remove the time capacitor from your OG Xbox

I am not familiar with that, is that a meme or a real fix for something important?

7a45e6  No.15853140

>>15853077

It's something important, but only on specific board versions of the OG Xbox.

The clock cap on that specific board tends to leak eventually. Doing that on the later boards causes it to not boot though and you should replace it on that one instead if you need to at all. If you have one you should see what revision you have before you start cutting shit out.

It's a real fix, the capacitor can leak on the mb and fucking kill the xbox because microsoft was too jewish to put good capacitors in just like mark is too jewish to let us have decent threads

1.6 is the safe board revision. Every revision earlier must have it removed or replaced and the vented electrolytic fluid cleaned up.

i've heard that the genesis can use newer/more powerful models of the sound chip and makes games sound different. some guy had a youtube video of it. (not the mega amp)

250f27  No.15853747

It's more like they just sound worse. Genesis consoles are a mess as far as hardware revisions but fortunately the most desirable ones are common. Games don't really care if you have a ym2612 or not, they'll still try to use the same addresses and if they aren't there or are changed, they'll either use them or not resulting in unintended results.

Yeah, but people forget that the Commodore 64 had a FM add-on. Also, someone is working on a YM2608 tracker program, so I cannot wait to see how that pans out. The best FM chip is the YM2151, hands down.

So you can actually "change" the original chip with a different one with somewhat the same specifications or something like that?

ecf4f8  No.15854917

>>15853601

SNES had higher quality caps than most consoles, but some people suggest electrolytic capacitors should be replaced every 25 years because they tend to go out of spec. If you've never done it before you may as well get a cap kit and get it overwith.

>>15853601

The SNES is not really in the list of systems in dire need of re-capping. That list includes the TG-16 (and its derivatives like the Duo) and the Game Gear. Newer CD-based systems, too, I suppose.

>>15854902

Essentially, yes. As long as the inputs and outputs are still on the same pins, and there's no difference in the input our output levels (voltage, current). It sounds complicated, but it's often like simply using a different brand of vanilla to make cookies or something.

>>15854917

If one has nothing better to do, re-capping old computer motherboards and game system boards is at least very effective preventative maintenance.

Image is all you have to do to get expansion audio from an Everdrive (with the appropriate OS version, of course). Just one resistor.
