I saw this recently, early windows XP games with better audio (although with a good soundcard) than most games made today.

Sure windows Vista killed accelerated audio, but recent attempts failed to resurrect it.

All AMD cards have a very good audio dsp that's unused, PS4 has the same tech, the Xbox one has a completely overpowered one (same performance as a single 360 CPU core).

I started hearing this after I installed a old 5.1 receiver that was in the attic with it's speakers, the difference is huge when you have good surround support.

Efforts in hardware are going into gimmicks like 4K and software has been taken over by mudbloods who make bloated garbage in Java, the quality of commercial goods peaked in the latter half of the 20th century.

Last I heard some gook bought the rights to 3d audio and just squats on it now. Don't know the validity of that claim though.

Speaking of audio, are sound cards a meme? A guy I know told me that most motherboards nowadays have pretty good onboard sound cards already and that buying a new one is not worth it. He said that the key to excellent sound is a good pair of headphones and a decent amplifier which will 'beat any overpriced sound card".

sage for somewhat off-topic

Wait 'til you see what there was in 1999.

Note that the Thief duology had a lot of this too, though, which your video doesn't really cover even though it uses Thief as an example for EAX.

Note also this tech demo from 2010, though.

Probably true unless you're some kind of audiophile with a studio to actually do shit in that requires better quality sound.

>>15837032

I'd say he's right in most circumstances but there have been a handful of times over the years that a proper soundcard would have been pretty useful to me. Creative really fucked things up as far as pc soundcards go, seemingly on purpose since all the tech for amazing audio is around and has been for a long time. They just take over the market and drove it into the ground.

Yes, onboard sound has come a long way. Regarding the headphones/amp, even the really high quality sound cards still get affected by internal electrical interference, external DAC+AMP is the way to go, you don't have to pair them with headphones specifically though, you can get speakers that will connect to the DAC+AMP setup which I hear will be better than any ordinary computer speakers.

Things like the loudness war proves that sound design has been going down rapidly, which I'm sure has crossed over into video games.

3b4695  No.15837316

It's really simple: high-quality audio can't be shown off in marketing material and normalfags can't tell the difference regardless, so manufacturers aren't willing to invest in new audio hardware that nobody will buy and developers aren't willing to waste time implementing fancy audio features that nobody will care about.

>high-quality audio can't be shown off in marketing material

Surely as long as anyone watching a trailer with headphones on you could pull off gameplay trailers that make the viewer go "woah it really looks like he's walking around me!".

2fce59  No.15837382

you will thank me later

get this - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/get-started/adk-install

let it install - Compatibility Administrator

Create a new database and application fix, point it to an exe

find "HardwareAudioMixer" from the list of fixes (might be on second list)

enjoy the audio restored again

2fce59  No.15837390

oh and also dont forget to save and install the database file, so it recognized it automatically as the program starts

this is basicly customized compatibility fixes that happen in the background of windows itself

You can get at the very least get working directional audio in games that use OpenAL and feed it directional data by installing openal-soft and enabling HRTF in the config file. Games that do that include every source game with some console commands and most old games in general.

For gnu+linux users that's as simple as having openal-soft installed and creating a file called ".alsoftrc" with "hrtf = true" inside it inside your home dir, although you may want a more complex config file with a custom hrtf preset because the default isn't good enough for everyone.

As for why there's no push for game audio nobody in the games industry cares about fun, and when they did care Creative sued everyone to oblivion with their gay patents and then went bankrupt themselves.

There was a NuTomb Raider ad showing off "Dolby Atmos", but it seems to be console-only, which is retarded since 90% of them use shitty TV speakers. Anyways it's all scripted sequences which makes the scene lose all immersion.

This video sucks, there's way more commentary than examples, but it's the only direct capture I can find. It's not even good compared to OP's examples.

Imagine if you'd have to buy an expensive audio card on top of an expensive video card though.

You jusr had to mention them, didn't you? Now I'm getting irritated thinking about all the times opver the years i wanted to see and hear a game to determine if I want it or not and there's not one single video that doesn't have those faggots talking over everything, when they lower the fucking game sound so all you can hear is their voice it';s even fucking worse.

I'd say he's right, yeah. Until 10 years ago at most, a good sound card was worth the money because aside from the improved audio, it would even give you better fps in most games.

But since the mid to late 2000s motherboard and chipset manufacturers really stepped up their game in integrated audio quality, also processors and memory have advanced enough that the performance impact from audio processing and decoding is negligible in most cases.

Sound cards might still make some difference if you're an audiophile with a pair of $300+ headphones.
