Done the first time it's kind of charming and different but it's been done how many times now? It's just feels so manufactured in a "hello fellow kids" type of way. It's former talent, Josh Sawyer, Tim Cain, Leonard Boyarsky have become so out of touch or (in the case of Sawyer) pozzed that they have skewed visions of what their audience wants. This game reminds me of Singularity, in that it sort of was a best-of mixtape of an entire generation of shooters. Prey (the real one) was similairly a game that had everyhing shooters had up until then, interactive stuff, impressive shadows, a basic shooting gameplay and so on. Singularity had all the things that were popular at the time, the gimmick gravity affecting thing, time as a gameplay element, post-disaster environments, audiologs and so on. I think it even had a turrent section.
I predict Outer Worlds will be just like that, an amalgamation of everything in shooters this gen. It got the leftist humour, the stats flying out of enemies when you shoot them, mystery meat everywhere and so forth.

My guess is that it was originally a proof of concept to try to negotiate another deal with Bethesda to work on a Fallout game, since their own projects weren't exactly catching fire in the industry, but which later morphed into a big middle finger pointed right at Pete and Todd. It was a big gamble, to be sure, assuming that there was actually a market for a product that people seemed to be screaming at Bethesda for but which Bethesda wasn't providing. They bet on the casual market that quality (in relative terms) could be more successful than branding and advertising alone. They set out to beat Bethesda at their own game, and it's looking like they did it. Whether or not they ever thought they could use it as a proof of concept to work with Bethesda again is a moot point now that MS owns them though.
I did hear an absurd conspiracy theory about Fallout 76 being engineered to fail, and Bethesda working with Obsidian to make Outer Realms a success - all as a way to try to force a shakeup at Zenimax and get rid of some of the rotten investors/bosses that have been ruining the company by monetizing mods, pushing online multiplayer/microtransactions, and strangling their development pipelines by denying the funding and approval for the development of a new engine. FO76 was the microtransaction bait to get the heads to bite at the proposal for much expanded development teams across several studios - and now that they have the personnel and funding to do their jobs - they torpedo FO76 to biblical proportions with rapid-fire repeated PR disasters to put the bosses into crisis mode at the tidal wave of public backlash. Then Outer Realms gets revealed, hailed as the second coming by pretty much everyone - which puts Todd in a better position to pivot the companies direction back to making the kind of games he wants in order to capitalize on TOR's success. Meanwhile, Bethesda pulls some strings with Microsoft - works in some future exclusivity deals, and hands Obsidian to them on a silver platter. Everyone wins, except Zenimax.
Or something along those lines. Like I said, it's absurd - even Todd can't tell a lie that big. Or can he?

I think based on the card system it has, FO76 was intended to be a F2P game with microtransactions. However, for some reasons such as Todd's new game (Starfield) not going to be released for another 2-3 years, lootboxes being banned, and microtransactions getting so much controversy lately, zenimax went full jew and released it as a 60 buck game with strictly cosmetic microtransactions.
Aside from that, the netcode and the gameworld were actually a huge undertaking, that's why they felt like selling it for 60 bucks would be justified.
