Because there's no proper DMs outside of set guilds/groups, and everyone has their guard up when it comes to anyone they've never met. It's lack of structure coupled with (at this point) characters they've been developing on and off for over 14 years leads to a lot of shit clashing with one another.
Imagine it like playing pretend in gradeschool, but everybody is sort of doing their own thing and it's been going on for the nearly quarter of a lifetime.

It was a lot nicer before things were "streamlined" and every mechanic became automated. When grouping and trading became automatic with very little player effort involved in organizing is when the mmo genre died. People used to regularly rp by just acting out their characters role and personality

Because the games aren't designed around roleplaying necessarily, but more around macros, statistics and flashiness. How many MMOs do you know that have things such as instruments in them? The simplest roleplaying archetype, the musician, isn't even featured in the majority of WoW-clones aside from maybe a bard class which could easily have been called priest, shaman or druid had they not slapped a guitar on him.

A good mmo is an mmo with an actually good community that adds a layer of personal enjoyement to the experience that is simply lost with pre canned cutscenes.
We live in an age of zoomers and soylets so every guild you join will be the same LGTBQIAP+ friendly space with no meanie swear words allowed, and all fun streamlined into pressing a button and having a bunch of randoms appear and do shit for you, then disappear.
There's no marketplace, no economy, no threat of pkers, no scams, no guild rivalries, no last minute stranger appearing and helping you survive against a farm gone wrong. No real player input in your experience, if you feel like it, you could solo everything.
It's all the worst aspects of WoW amped to a thousand.

It's a mixed bag, really. Many, many RPers are autistic beyond any reasonable scope (and that means something if you post on 8chan), but I also remember many hours of good fun I had on RP servers.
For instance, I used to play a Human rogue on a WoW RP server. Sure enough, first thing I was confronted with was Goldshire Inn, but later on, I was "hired" as a mercenary by a Gnome Mage who wished to explore secret ruins. Which is to say, dungeons.
The constant in-character banter I had with that mage as we fought our way through Zul'Farrak (sorry Ma'am, but you must be at least this high to climb up this pyramid) or the Blackrock Depths (have you tried something other than stabbing him in the back?) was some of the most fun I ever had with the game.

You've got serious nepotism problems, good roleplayers being ignored because the staff aren't besties with them, bad roleplayers being ignored for rule breaking because the staff know them, and right creeps running around roleplaying their sexual fantasies while being ignored, and staff breaking privacy rules just because. The one thing that was nice was that nobody introduced themselves by their fucking disabilities… I'm in a guild right now that is fairly balanced if you ask me. No creepy shit, no trannies, no attention whores, but they don't RP so I guess that's okay. What pisses me off is these people who run around playing characters that don't even exist, or FUCKING PANDA PLAYERS they're the goddamn worse. The faggots RP AT YOU not with you, like you're supposed to fucking give them all this fucking attention, fuck off furries.

This. The role of a DM is underrated, but one of their most important jobs is reign in shit like what OP posted. You (the group as a whole) decide on the sort of tone you want for your game and the GM keeps it on track. You want a stupid, over the top character? Better be playing a ridiculous nonsense game because that shit only works if everyone is doing it and half the fun is being as retarded as possible. If you bring that same shit to a serious (>WoW, serious, I know) setting with even a modicum of lore or world building in it though, it's the GM's job to slap your shit and say "No, that's stupid and makes no sense. Either take this at least slightly seriously or fuck off"

From playing on the main RP server of FFXIV though, I can state a few things with relative certainty. One: Autism abounds in the community and that makes sense since one of the key aspects of autism is getting lost in fantasy worlds.
There are three general types of roleplayers
>The Strict Lorefags: These people will stick to the game's lore no matter what. Even the slightest deviation will send them into an autistic rage. No one can invent anything that doesn't exist within the game's world even if it would make sense. No one can wield a gun in one hand and a sword in the other because there's nothing in the game that has a sword and a gun.
>The Roll-With-It Lorefag: These guys are probably the least autistic and are generally the creative writing types. If you can justify it, they'll roll with it.
>The Characterfag: They've decided on the character they want to play. Fuck the game world and everything in it. They're a half angel half vampire assasin from the hidden leaf village. Maybe they've played this character for years in various games and such and will make the slightest effort to make sure they don't take the biggest steaming dump all over the game's lore. Maybe.
Erpers and Mary Sues can fall into any of these three categories, for the record, and any and all can be colossal faggots, some being more likely than others though. Unfortunately, like so many people in so many groups, it's the obnoxious degenerates that stand out
