In the vein of the Phoenix Wright threads that always post cases on the dates they happened in-game, let's have a thread up about 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors. Pic related is taken a Q&A from the creator of the series, Uchikoshi Kōtarō, a Q&A that used to be up on Aksys' website at this link http://www.aksysgames.com/999/answers . I've searched both archive and the Wayback Machine, but I haven't been able to find it in its original form. The answers are preserved on a Wikia though, so you can go read them all if you so wish. http://zeroescape.wikia.com/wiki/Answers

Anyway, in the year 2018, 18 children are kidnapped by Cradle Pharmaceutical and separated, 9 into a building in the Nevada desert, and 9 on the Gigantic, a ship set to sink into the ocean. These children are forced to play something called the Nonary Game, lest they face certain death, either by drowning or the bombs strapped to their wrists. 8 9 kids trapped on the sinking ship end up being saved thanks to a lunkhead cop who probably would have been half of a really good buddy cop movie if ever given a chance, and some time fuckery that goes on nine years in the future. So let's get to it then. Which character did you end up liking the most? Which puzzle? What ending did you get on your first go-round with the game? Have you played the sequels?

My internet cut out right as I hit post, which is a great omen for the thread. Also posting a very important answer from the Q & A I also saved when I first read it.

I tried to play VLR and hated it so I dropped it. 999 was great. I didn't get a single game over though, so I'd like to go back and get those some time. Got the ending that unlocks the true ending, then the true ending on my first blind playthrough. Don't know why it took me so long to pick it up, it was great.

Reminder if you're cool with VNs and liked 999 to read Ever17 and if you like that, the other two infinity games. Killer Queen doesn't have shit to do with the writer for 999 but is also decent for a doujin novel game. Not as well written though, obviously.

999 and VLR are the best stories in gaming.

I literally barely play video games anymore after playing them because I find everything just boring "kill bad terrorist/kill bad wizard".

ZTD was a good game but bad Zero Escape game.

Probably Clover, Akane, or Junpei.

>I tried to play VLR and hated it so I dropped it. 999 was great.

999 is definitely the best game in the series. It works as a self-contained story as well so there's no "incompleteness" if you just stop at 999. I don't regret playing VLR or even ZTD, but they pale in comparison to 999 for me and I don't think they needed to exist as sequels to 999.

>I didn't get a single game over though, so I'd like to go back and get those some time. Got the ending that unlocks the true ending, then the true ending on my first blind playthrough.

Impressive. I got every other ending before the true ending. I even got two endings twice, IIRC.

Thanks for the recommendations!

Those puzzles don't get any better.

VLR and ZTD would be so much better if they were sprite-based like 999.

> Which character did you end up liking the most?

Probably Seven and Snake

>Which puzzle?

I played this game two years ago and my memory is shit. I don't remember most of the puzzles but I think the face matching puzzle was my favorite because of what the full implication of it meant for Ace

>What ending did you get on your first go-round with the game?

Maybe knife ending?

>Have you played the sequels?

Started VLR, then fell off and have been meaning to finish it again.

It's a bit dry at times but I do like these games. 999 made for something decent to read through while at the laundrymat.

Facial expressions are "off" in VLR, especially when the mouth gets involved. Aside from that, good spritework is just cleaner than 3D models.

Agree about the art style changing for the worse in VLR and ZTD. Reminds me of how much worse Neverwinter Nights looks compared to Planescape: Torment, Baldur's Gate II, etc. because of the shift to 3D.

>Facial expressions are "off" in VLR, especially when the mouth gets involved.

Here's an example of that. This happened maybe 4 times.

999 has objectively the best story and art of the 3, but I don't mind VLr's art style remotely as much as I do the disaster that was ZTD. I've never been so disappointed by a game before.

Snake is a top-tier character. Literally took himself to hell just so he could get revenge.
