Have you ever beaten one of the big roguelikes?

Out of the classic "Enter a dungeon to find the macguffin" I've only ever played DCSS and I've only been to zot once, and died before I got the orb.

nope, I did beat TraumaRL, The Slimy Lichmummy and DoomRL, both in HNTR and HMP

My biggest problem is that Im a fucking digital hoarder, so I have a lot of roguelikes on my PC I never play and I never stick with one for long enough to get the hang of it and make any decent runs

I've won DCSS twice, the first 3 rune as an unarmed human berserker, the second time with 14/15 runes as a HOMo, also unarmed.

Also beat ToME the very first time I played the temporal warden class, which it turns out is broken even when your skill tree is retarded

but insane is hard

oh, and TWs have a pretty easy time on insane right now because high-end weapon damage(for everything) is OP until the next patch

c79526  No.15826509

I've beaten DCSS and Nethack, I've also "beaten" Elona, but I've never gotten through the Void due to loss of interest. I've also beaten ToME, but that's not really bragworthy.

>>15826467

>madness is no fun allowed difficulty

This.

I don't like madness; there's no point to 90% of the shit you can level because maluses are useless and everything hinges on getting a specific victory cycle going.

I don't play a lot of roguelike, the only ones I've beaten are DoomRL and ToME, both of which are pretty easy.

>>15826467

>ToME is pretty easy on normal

Yeah, once you figure out that stun and confusion immunity are the most important stats you can get pretty much any class through normal with minimal effort. The most difficult part is not getting bored while fighting the million orcs that make up the second half.

I played a roguelike years ago, it was called soup, or something. I would like it more if it wasn't so… dungeons 100% of the time no rest points/town. Playing Grim Dawn now as Arcanist, that is fun. Only lvl 30. Using the Aether ray laser skill and just capped 50 on Arcanist, time to raise the % bonus skills.

Nuclear throne is good but it's straight up a twin stick arcade shooter with perks, and item pickups are just equivalent to powerups from old shooters. I wish whoever came up with the idea to call every game that has to be beaten in one sitting a roguelike has some great misfortune befall him.

dacd77  No.15834342

I've beaten Nethack, DCSS, Brogue, and Sil. Never Vanilla Angband though.

My biggest piece of advice is to just play a Dwarven warrior or equivalently simple class until you've seen most of the game, then you can start experimenting. Knowledge is your most important asset.

I've taken an interest in roguelikes after playing several hunded hours of various roguelites, mostly Isaac.

However i'm a bit put off by the UI as i don't want it to be glimmering triple A garbage but at least user friendly.

I've beaten ToME 2 (the Middle-earth game) multiple times. On top of that I've beaten Ti'krzvllat or whatever her name was the ultimate boss with a sorcerer and a swordmaster.

I got bored with ToME 4 (Tales of Maj'Eyal) which I suppose people here are referring to when talking about ToME, but I got a character (who is still alive, but the build concept stopped scaling) back from the east. ToME 4 is such a flawed game and very different from ToME 2.

Steamband may not count as a big roguelike, but I've beaten it. It's a difficult game, but I found some delicious cheese that helped me survive the end game with its guided missiles that explode for irresistible huge damage and wreck the terrain to your disadvantage.

d53327  No.15846006

For me it was Dungeons of Dredmor as an axe-dualwielding berserker and ADoM's Lawful Ultimate Ending with a dark elven paladin, also was around the 80th floor of ZAngband with a half-titan white monk at the time of HDD failure.

c79526  No.15846074

>>15845428

Simplistic, but not quite roguelite simplistic. You have to manage equipment durability and how much you can carry, and you have to constantly contend with the autoscrolling darkness eating what's behind you, so you can't go stashing stuff for later. Magic is time consuming but useful; most non-mage classes should stick to a few utility spells though. There are a few recruitable NPCs that you might or might not encounter, but you need charisma to recruit people, and usually more than just a point, making it difficult for many builds to even secure one.

On the whole, I'd give it a tentative recommendation; autoscrolling roguelike with more depth than you'd expect, but not that much more. Just remember that you haven't really won until you've gotten to the end.

Vermithrax has a good tutorial series on CDDA.

Just from the top of my head:

- Do not go out looting during the day. Zombies will see you and they will swarm you to death, if the hulks don't get you first.

- When in doubt, run. When in doubt and danger, try setting fire to your surroundings. The light and noise will distract the zombies and most likely burn a whole bunch of them.

- The most desirable early game items are improvised crowbars and lockpicks to get into places quickly and quietly.

- If you see a mansion near you, those are good places to find almost endless supplies with only basic zombies around.

- Be a 105 IQ genius and loot books as much as you can

That game really just requires that you die over and over again until you get a lucky start tbh. It's really fun but tiring as hell. My last character I was like a month in with full plate and a zweihander and I turned a corner only to have a hulk punch me through a concrete wall into a surplus store and then chase me down and kill me.

c79526  No.15846258

>>15846164

Basic tips:

Wait until night to go looting.

Don't even bother with guns until you can handle the attention gunshots bring.

Don't delve too far into a town at night or you might get chased down by feral hunters.

You need to balance storage volume with the encumberance caused by what you wear; don't just equip gear carelessly.

Fitting cargo pants and trenchcoats are ideal for storage early on without too much encumberance.

You can 'c'lose the blinds on most windows in generic houses, which keeps zombies from getting LoS on you and lets you loot in peace.

Getting or crafting a knife will let you butcher corpses so they don't come back to life (and trains survival too), and lets you cut up stuff for scrap and cauterize infected wounds (risk of making infection worse though).

If you don't have a knife, you can keep them from coming back by 's'mashing their corpses.
