Honestly I would play older western games more if not for the fact that they often seem to be weirdly fucking ugly. And I'm not taling about the graphics, that is fine, but for some reason almost every wester RPG goes for this bizzare semi-realisic arstyle that makes all characters look like they have an additional set of genes. I can get over this is the gameplay is really good and I can get into the game quick like in the case of the Heroes of Might and Magic series. The best looking games had less realistic artstyles, or at least artstyles that didn't have any weird looking portraits.

ODST has a lot more freedom than 2, 3 and reach, the fight just before you drop down into the hive for example, it consists of 2 hunters and 4 armored brutes with jetpacks, then 2 gold chieftains, 10 grunts and 4 jackals at least in legendary mode, halo is a borefest in lower difficulties, you can either go straight ahead and power through the hunters and brutes first or circle around them and engage the golden chieftains and their squads first, then move onto the jetpack brutes and lastly the hunters once you scavenge the fuel rod guns and brute shots from the mooks you just killed (this is your best choice), you can also use stealth and head straight for the elevator and bypass the fight altogether, or snipe the jackals, throw grenades at the chieftains and take advantage of the chaos to drop down the elevator shaft, you'll waste a lot of resources though.

Might & Magic always hits a nice spot even at its worst, but the formula in 3-5 brilliantly combines classic first-person grid-based exploration with spacially aware combat.
bonus points for 4 and 5 being combined into one massive supergame when installed to the same directory
Heretic and its sequel Hexen are fast-paced medievally themed shooters built on the Doom engine. The D&D inspiration sometimes cited by Romero and Carmack really show through on these and the gameplay and level design are absolutely an improvement on Doom's formula
I recommend the Shadow of the Serpent Riders version of Heretic but original is fine too

I would say it's worth playing, gameplay is solid and it has a great soundtrack, but just don't expect it to be like the first two games. It's very different in style and theme and the bullet time now feels more like a super power, but I guess the same could be said for the second one to some extent. Play it, just don't go in expecting Max Payne game if that makes sense. I feel like expectations brake Max Payne 3, it's not great, but it's not bad either far from it in my opinion

Meh not really, like I said it doesn't really feel like a Max Payne game, but I guess the ending is satisfying. If you're interested in the story, the third game takes place quite a long time after the second one and Sam Lake the guy behing the first two games wrote a graphic novel on what Max was doing in between second and third game. It's pretty fun, a bit long winded in it's plot but the gameplay is solid. There's one point in the game where they make it seem like you're going to do stealth and the second you encounter an enemy you are spotted and more bang bang boom, which was a bit of a let down.
There are "flashbacks" to the orginal Max Payne setting, but not much in relation to the first 2 other then hidden references.

I never had any problems with the controls and I didn't found the game to be too buggy (no more than most western games of the time). I think the gameplay was pretty good.
The vampire Belmonts were already seen in CV Legends (Aria of Sorrow also had a similar twist), but the overall story and the way it developed was more interesting in this game.

Half-Life's enemies are bullet sponges, it feels like you're walking on ice, and the "story" is non-existent just some basic puzzles and barely complex environments, 2 had more cutscenes and unfunny humor thrown into it. It will forever be the most overrated game of all time.

It's gotten pretty pathetic. The game is remarkably broken too, the AI is so easy to break and make it do nothing for seconds at a time. It just makes combat a trial of how can you break the AI to negate hitscan damage. The levels have this lacking feel, where they are just too uninteresting and act entirely as back drop to move past. Any obstacles are a shallow gimmick with the exception of combat which is the only core mechanic the game sticks to.

No but standards do, and despite how modern games are generally shit, some things have undeniably gotten better. It's particularly noticeable with controls and sound (ignoring things like resolution which while important does fairly little for the actual gameplay) since plenty of old game had really shitty controls and often hadn't figured out how to properly use a keyboard. Or they had incredibly slow and unresponsive controls often coupled with absurd animation locks (which unfortunately has been making a comeback with shit games like the ones Rockstar pump out having ridiculous input delay and animation locks for muh realism). A lot of old games also had really bad sound design, with sounds don't properly conveying how far away the source is or sound effects being extremely unfitting (very easy to notice in many old games where footsteps in particular tend to be very loud and clearly unfitting for the type of footwear and floor that's being walked on). Gameplay doesn't change, but standards do, and a lot of standards have improved despite AAA shit in the last decade or more trying to tear them down. The sentiment that gameplay can't indirectly become worse because you're used to improved versions of it is fucking retarded. Here's a concrete example: the first Etrian Odyssey was fairly well received despite its various flaws, but as the sequels came out and improved upon the gameplay (such as by allowing strafing and adding other quality of life improvements), people started suggesting starting with the first one if you intended to play them all, specifically because going back to it once you were used to the improvements in the sequels made it more annoying to play. The game remained the same, but it became less enjoyable to play once you were used to the improvements.

I really wish Half Life 1 stuck with the Survival Horror vibes the game gave off right after the resonance cascade occurred when you're running around with barely any ammo trying to figure out what the fuck is going on. The setting was absolutely perfect for a first person Resident Evil type game.

It just didn't nail the action game schtick and by the half way mark became way too reliant on gimmick encounters like tanks that just make a grating noise and miss all their shots or retarded helicopters. The game is at its best when you're fighting just grunts but even then it's remarkably disjointed feeling.

Why is it you quake fags have this such a large fucking fetish for 3D that you can't even imagine that only having to aim on one axis is provides a different experience? We have both 3D and 2D platformers and nobody tries to say a 3D platformer is better than a 2D platformer because it has another dimension? When developers first started making platformers they had to make their requirements of timing and positioning easier than the 2D. This was because the addition of another dimension made it harder to control. Same thing happened with 3D shooters.

At the time it was only the 4th game in 8 years, and Halo 2 and 3 are distinct from each other and especially distinct from Halo 1 (which is way better than the disappointments that followed); so your explanation doesn't hold up.
I'd argue ODST's success is because it took the paper mache tier fan game that is Halo 3, and gave it a more appropriate setting/player character and an awesome co-op game mode in firefight.
