So /v/ I finally got the chance to play The Great Ace Attorney/Dai Gyakuten Saiban thanks to the fan translation who stopped at the fourth case, for now. I can't help but think that this game is what Apollo Justice should have been in the first place : a reboot of the series, but in another setting with different characters(without Phoenix.). While the cases so far weren't that strong except maybe for case 3, the visual presentation, the character interactions, the god tier OST heavily contribute to the the atmosphere - which is really the selling point of this game. If you're a fan of Sir Conan Doyle's work then it's even better, considering the MASSIVE amounts of references here and there, it's great. I was upset about how Sherlock was portrayed as first but in the end the bastard really did grow up on me, it's one of the rares cases where I can say that I genuine love a "lol so randumb xD" character.

Can't wait to play case 5 and DGS2.

I bought the cartridge, yes. It was mostly because there was a translation available, and also because I wanted to "atone" for the sin of having pirated all of the DS titles ten years ago, instead of buying them. I'm still a piratefag, but Ace Attorney games are the ones I make sure to buy no matter what.

You guessed right, it's their ladder debate. In this case, Naruhodo says it's a Spade and Susato is on the Shovel team.

I hate how in cuckchan this word lost its meaning but I honestly think that DGS is an Ace Attorney game filled with soul, compared to AJ, DD and SoJ. Despite the change of setting, I feel like it's the closest one to the original trilogy, especially in terms of character interaction just as you said.

But other than its atmosphere, the game has nothing else to offer. The trial sections were bland, unnecessarily dragged out and non exciting for the most part. Don't expect anything special or different for case 5.

Alright, I've never played any Ace Attorney game before in my entire life. I watched several clips of the series online and it looks fun. Not just outdated, but incorrect in one major way. The creator really screwed up by saying Professor Layton versus Ace Attorney isn't canon when it 100% is and it doesn't pull any amnesia bullshit either, although it doesn't have a bearing on anything besides itself. One of the game's major narrative strengths was its refusal to be just another "non-canon crossover game".

This list is otherwise good generally, but there are a few other things to address.

Release order Professor Layton v Phoenix Wright comes before Dual Destinies and after Investigations 2. You should have played at least the first game in the Layton series (Curious Village) before playing.

You can play Apollo Justice, Investigations (and then 2), and Versus in whatever order you want, release order is still recommended, but they don't really spoil each other. It is important you play Layton before Dual Destinies though, because they were in development for part of the same time, and several ideas (used and unused) from Layton were implemented in DD instead. Few fans know this.

I would definitely recommend a flashcart for these games, but Apollo Justice is on 3ds now, which means you can play the entire main series (everything but investigations) on a modded 3ds for free.

(Investigations 2 is my favorite in the series though so I will still recommended the flashcart.)

The very original ios version is also very good and fairly priced ($5), but I don't think it's available for purchase anymore. Can't speak to the newer versions.

The original ios version was almost identical to the Nintendo DS version, just with a slightly different ui. Supposedly Justice for All and T&T got the same treatment but I don't know what price, all three were taken down to make room for the uglier "HD" version. Screenshots are almost impossible to find.

It only really matters if you have jailbroken ios device though, and even then they can still run smaller DS roms pretty easily.

I'm glad to have pirated the emulator Drastic on DS, to replay the games with the original graphics comfortably in my bed on occasion. Blowing in the microphone to find prints was something I missed when I was playing them on No$gba, when I lost my DS.

I didn't play the Layton game, and probably never will. What elements got carried into Dual Destinies?
