It's solid, but it's not great, and I'm pressed to even call it good. The vehicle building mechanics are amazing, but that's pretty much it, aside from some small things like Humba Wumba getting a cute redesign. The problem is, while everything about the vehicles is fun, everything about what you are supposed to do, with the vehicles, isn't. You've got a total of six expansive worlds, and they're all incredibly empty. The only incentives for open exploration are notes and bonus jinjo missions. Otherwise, everything worth doing are in the level's missions, which aren't great. To make things inconvenient, each world is split into multiple levels, that are exactly the same, aside from which missions are available in them. Only the levels with Grunty fights are changed in any significant way. Even jiggies are made inconvenient to use, as you have to retrieve them from a specific location in the hub world, then physically cart them to a machine associated with the world whose levels you wish to unlock. The game had one great thing, and then surrounded with with annoyances and mediocrity.

Thinking about it, I might have that bit about the jiggies reversed, as it's been years since I've last played the game, but it's just as tedious, either way.

It was essentially the best-realized example of virtual lego vehicles that actually worked. You could make cars, planes, boats, helicopters, submarines, etc, and they all worked pretty well, if you made them right. There's been a number of games that have tried the same thing, but most of them fall under the umbrella of indie sandbox building games on steam.

Because collecting a million different kinds of bullshit isn't fun and I don't know why you retarded N64 babies convinced yourself it was ever fun. I play platformers for actual platforming, of which the original Banjo games barely have any. At the very least Nuts & Bolts did something different that turned out to be really fun if you had creativity. Banjo has always ever been a middling series that people remember fondly because it was one of the only good games for the N64 and they didn't have the sense to buy a PSX.

I love Banjo Tooie. I think it did everything right as far as sequels go:
>makes levels more expansive then the first
>make boss fights more involved
>you keep all your old power ups but get completely new ones for the new adventure, nothing is regain attempting to shove it as new and you don't lose anything ala Zelda/Metroid
>overworld and levels interconnect a bit more now for more puzzle solving and traversing
That said I can understand why some don't like Tooie's overexpansive levels. Kazooie is a tighter game because the levels are smaller but more compact. Tooie levels are larger and more spread out. I like this but I can understand why others prefer Kazooie's smaller levels.

The problem was the largeness often didn't add a whole lot. They just spaced everything out more, and tanked the framerate. Tooie improved just about everything else though. There were more and better bossfights, transformations and set-pieces were better, the levels had more creative themes, and I think the writing was even a little funnier.

I've written emails to Rare them telling them I'm going to kill myself if there's not another Banjo-Kazooie. I have a yearly ritual of 100%ing both of the first games along with DK64, which I started in 2005. I played the first game when I was in kindergarten, and today I'm mostly bald.
BK felt really old and dead by the time Nuts and Bolts was announced, and I was really surprised that it was actually happening- but my instincts knew they would fuck it up. The graphics were great, but it was extremely frustrating and finnicky. The point of the game is to experiment different vehicle plans, but to get through with building one vehicle you need to wait through minutes of loading screens and menu text. Then you end up failing, because Rare had some certain trick in mind to beat the level, and have to go through all the menus and loading screens again to do a small alteration to your car. It's fucking annoying and totally against the explorative and free nature of the original game.
Yooka-Laylee sucks is because it's an indie game, even though BK at the time of it's release was a highly polished AAA Nintendo game. So basically Yooka-Laylee is the modern equivalent of licensed movie bargain-bin games. First-party assistance from Microsoft was the best asset that Nuts and Bolts had going for it, but Rare's ego got in the way and thought they had to modernize it by throwing in a bunch of cancerous car shit. Meanwhile everyone was playing normal platformers like Mario Galaxy.
Grant Kirkhope said recently that BK's vehicles was one of the most difficult things ever accomplished at Rare, which makes the entire game seem like a huge waste of resources that could have been used to make a normal BK game, and a sequel. It was such a massive disappointment at the time, and now even more so after seeing how much that company has driven themselves off a cliff after Kinect was announced. Craig Duncan has explained away the Kinect years by explaining that they sold more than BK N&B and PDZ, like that's an accomplishment.
Not to sound spastic, but it's disturbing to see such an important company in the history of games go to absolute shit, 10 years after people thought they couldn't sink any lower. Remembering back to 2008, people were extremely worried about the direction of Rare after the half-decade of mostly shitty Xbox games. I think that if Banjo-Kazooie were not so thoroughly raped, they might not have slipped so far as their current situation.

Had they just made it something else, instead of forcing the Banjo-Kazooie name on it, the whole thing would probably have done a lot better. Best case scenario, they got to do a few sequels to the "Nuts and Bolts" franchise, not that anyone on /v/ would give a fuck, and we'd probably have a proper Banjo Threeie like we were supposed to get, instead of the dumpster fire that is Yooka Laylee.
