What keeps Valve from going full SJW is that they're at least trying to be impartial.
Granted, this sometimes required people to complain, like with Hatred or lewd games.
I think this is because their platform, Steam, is only kept alive by people willing to have their games published on it. Whilst it remains to be the big player on the market, Origin, Uplay and Battle.net still maintain a strong market-share through exclusive products.
Valve does not have that exclusivity. They barely produce anything, and many of their recent investments (paid mods, steam machines, VR, steam controller) aren't successful enough to force the mainstream onto the platform. Artifact is going to exit its beta and see a release later this months, but so far that product looks like it'll be dead on arrival too.
If Valve suddenly decides to not publish a game right around release (which is what would happen if they listened to SJW complaints), what would the developer do? The game is already made, and they sure as hell aren't going to drop the project entirely because it wont be on Steam.
Instead, the game will be on competing platforms instead. Not on Origin or Uplay, but on whatever the new Windows 10 app store is called.
As it gains traction, Steam will bleed significantly. Microsoft can shove their app-store preinstalled onto effectively every computer, but Valve cannot. Why install Steam to buy&install the new shitty AAA game when people can just get it through the preinstalled app-store?
It's uncertain whether Gabe is the only one aware of this, or whether there's more people in the company.
However, I do agree that if he and other important figures at Valve quit (death or otherwise), Valve will probably implode on itself. Horizontal company structure is a terrible way to steer a company in such a huge position. When that happens, it'll probably be sold and incorporated, which will turn it SJW if that's still the cool thing to do.

An example that comes to mind is Opus Magnum, the Zachtronics I-can't-believe-it's-not-Spacechem game. It got rejected and later approved when enough people complained. Googling around reveals that there's plenty more games that got rejected.
I have no idea how good of a platform GOG Galaxy is as I don't use it, but it sure as hell doesn't have anywhere near the position Steam does.
