I checked it out after 4 years and the game is actually optimized now, is updated regurarly and has an autistic but really helpful fanbase that usually fills 4-5 servers at all times.

I liked Dystopia and a few other Half-Life 2 mods The release of HL2 killed a lot of good mods because everyone assumed that a successor mod would be released that would eclipse the original. I remember everyone expected a sequel to The Specialists and the mod died when it didn't happen. Out of those, only FireArms got a decent sequel and it took them ages upon ages and it was drowned by dev team drama along the way, so most people gave up on it.

Modding is not as lively as it was because it seems like developers have forgotten or don't care to design engines that allow you to script logic that can be run server-side and evaluated client-side with no downloads on the client. Downloading assets is almost unfeasible because modern games have insanely large assets. That's not to mention anything about the total glut of games with dedicated servers.
As an example, in 2005 you could play Neverwinter Nights multiplayer and find that each server had totally custom modules due to how the tile engine worked, while not having to download anything. DMs could script shit on the fly.

I managed to get a free key (dude I know lets me get his leftover keys from HB monthly as well as access his whole DRM free library) since I kinda wanted to see what had become of it after almost 4 years and for some reason pirating it seemed more of a hassle than usual if you wanted the latest one, that was around the release of the december 2017 update when it still wasn't into the main branch and you had to specifically subscribe to the beta branch.
So I just start playing and about halfway through something just doesn't seem right, it feels like I'm just playing the free version.
Then just to make sure I reinstall he free version with OAR and ST uncut, and yeah the free version is pretty much the exact same with a handful of differences that aren't even always in favor of the newer version (AI becomes omniscient because reasons, crossbow is worse in almost every way because reasons, difficulty is nerfed by making the AI both omniscient and retarded at the same time)
I mention that shit to someone and h just tells me "Bro just try the new patch with those mods", mods crash the new patch so I drop that idea but I still start replaying the game for a 3rd fucking time in a row because I'm a masochist, literally the only changes now are the framerate being better and literal eyecancer bloom fucking everywhere, and people will literally defend that to the death in the forums there's even a guy that's not affiliated with the devs making the rounds to make sure he leaves a passive aggressive reply in every single thread criticizing the devs, and he' still at it last I checked a couple days ago.
tl;dr: it took those idiot 4 fucking years to do an optimization pass, minor tweaks to the gameplay and graphics and have an half finished last level

One of the biggest differences is in how Unreal took place in large sprawling arenas and with mostly projectile weapons and with great AI. Half-Life was a slow "cinematic" scripted shooter with mainly hitscan weapons. In Unreal enemies can dodge your shots and the other way around, in Half-Life skill isn't really a factor, you just go from one scripted scene to the next.

The beta was pretty fun and was also fun for a while after release. Sometime after the first Operation Payback is when it really started going downhill. The last time I checked it out, they brought back sprays, but their not customizable, have to be bought, and can be depleted. I remember making my own tags in Wally.
