Fear was developed to be graphically way ahead of its time and was market with that in mind, the game was fun, but not only because they added so much interactive environment, decals and other pretty effects.

FarCry 2 was just riding the Crysis meme at the time where everything had to be burnable, every shrub damageable in firefights and physics generally being a lot more highly regarded in games. It did not make it a better game, but it goes to show how easily such details have been lost in time. Feels like games back then used to always try to set new standards, nothing is doing that anymore, because nobody caters to neckbeards with high-end pc anymore. PC gaming was all about them back then. So no I disagree that new games are made for screenshots. They're made to appeal to the widest audience possible, especially in regards to specs. It's known that 76 wasn't even their main focus with most of the texas crew doing it, again as I said under a deadline without caution for sales. It should be obvious by the fact that the beta was so close to launch, I think even Call of Duty has a farther back beta on average. Todd did say in an interview that Starfield was in preproduction since the release of Fallout 3, I suspect actual production started right before Fallout 4 release.

The engine itself wasn't the problem, in the past. However, it was never built to support a Rust clone like Fallout 76. So this is actually the only time where "lol engine" complaints actually have some (accidental) validity.

All that said, Starfield and TES6 will be broken no matter what engine they run on, because Bethesda is bad at scripting, QA, and animation. (And lately they've also become bad at quest design and progression systems.)
