Halo 1 did replace goldeneye as THE console fps game in the eyes of many. Twin sticks being the way of the future. From 2001 (halo 1) to 2007 (halo 3), the halo series got massively popular and was a common scapegoat to hate. Then post-halo3, the hatred for halo started evaporating as call of duty's rising popularity began to overtake it. Halo hate becoming oldhat.
With this thread here, I'm not trying to prove much. Just that cod hatred (circa black ops 4's release) reminds me a lot of halo hatred (circa halo reach's release) from way back then. You can see it dying down a lot.

I've been playing Black Ops 4. It's like the mcrib, it's just kind of okay. I don't hate it, I don't necessarily like it, it's just okay. You have to have dual-channel DDR4 RAM to run it well. It uses 90% of my 8gb of DDR3 RAM with only blops 4 running. Practically requires 16GB. Oh, and it's not compatible with anti-virus programs. I gained 20-30 FPS and made all the stuttering go away when I turned off my anti-virus.
Hit registration is really bad. I can't tell you how many times I sat there shooting at someone and it simply didn't register. Also, all the good guns are locked behind grinding. Guns only become good after you unlock things for them. The starter DMR goes from being dogshit to destroying everyone once you have it at weapon level 12. It also one-shots people in Hardcore.
The operators are a mess. Most of them are alright but there's one who has an on-demand crowd control ability. He summons a drone which runs up to someone and zaps them. You can see the drone through walls so you just follow it to the guy it zapped and blast him for a free kill.
I have no strong opinions on zombies or Blackout. I don't really regret my purchase, especially because I got it for 50$ instead of 60$.

The reason these games were popular among console gamers is that they were all often played as local multiplayer shooters (though COD4 got a lot of online action to be fair). PC gamers at the time were largely playing games with more depth and/or teamwork that took more effort to learn and play individual matches (Quake, Unreal Tournament, Tribes 1 & 2, Battlefield 2 & 2142, etc.). You call them elitists but they were the hardcore to your casual, just like how console players call mobile gaming casual. It's not that there is something wrong with liking those games, but there is something wrong with putting them on the same level.
Some PC faggots don't get that it's ok to like casual shit but the older guys do and the reason for that is many of them have careers and families now. They see the appeal of games that are easier to jump in and play, hence the popularity of drop-in co-op, multiplayer survival games, and now Battle Royale. Everyone talks about the 13 year olds playing Fortnite but much of the audience are grown men.
I'm in my 30s working long hours and raising a kid, and I don't play competitive shooters these days. The types of games I used to play aren't being made anymore and honestly I don't know if I'd be able to get into them now anyway. I can't stand BR trash personally but I get why it's popular. Also if you think COD 4 is somehow dramatically different from BR, you must be like 16 years old at the most; all that casual shit looks the same to me. Whether it's cartoons or brown-grey sandboxes, it's a low-skill low-ttk first hit wins arena shooter.

Matches last just a few minutes, action is fast and furious, the most popular modes aren't even team-based. Second only to fighting games, arena FPS are the ultimate "easy to learn, difficult to master" casual MP games.

I don't ever remember anyone ever hating goldeneye, didn't make sense to, it was a fun console title that didn't impact pc shooters in anyway. Halo did get crap but it was much deserved because it did cause FPS titles to start being console focused and caused a lot of shooters to adopt generic as fuck plots trying to copy Halo's formula. Call of Duty basically did the same thing Halo did but worse. Which is the only reason anyone softened at all towards Halo, because CoD lowered their standards.
