I looked a little into it. There's an option on youtube-dl which explicitly serves the purpose of marking videos as "watched", presumably to help the video owner.

If we assume that the devs know what they're doing, then this proves that youtube servers keep track of videos being watched for the purposes of promoting the channel you're downloading from, and googlevideo.com only provides a link to the video file itself. Google itself could obviously track all the queries being made to googlevideo.com, but they don't necessarily use this data for youtube views.
For intellectually impaired anons like a12a4c: youtube trackers aren't the same as tracking views from googlevideo.com. While google will know you're querying for that video file, you won't be helping promote the video owner via the algorithm that accounts for watched videos.

I looked at the googlevideo.com requests for youtube.com, youtube-dl and invidio.us and there weren't any major differences outside of cpn which both youtube-dl and invidio.us lack. Their tracking methods aren't public and obviously it would be dead simple for google to track these other interfaces as views if they meet certain criteria.

Not true at all, look at the request to googlevideo.com from invidious and you'll see the first is a 302 redirect and in the second you'll see your own IP in the mip parameter (obviously they have your ip anyway from the request itself, but it's also given as a url parameter for authorization and it won't play otherwise). This isn't any different from how you get the video from the youtube player.

You can see in the documentation about their monetization practices, they pay the most for unique views and a small portion for time viewed (doesn't have to be unique). For proof on the API only providing a single unique view: try it yourself. To emulate what invidio.us does just use wget or the like to directly download the video off google's server, the monetazation ends here and at this point invidio.us hosts it on their website, if you do this multiple times from your IP on google's API you're only a single unique view. Now I'm pretty sure invidious might has multiple servers providing videos so it's possible there is more than 1 unique view, but it's nowhere near as high as it would be if you direct linked the youtube video like a fucking faggot.

But invidious doesn't mirror the videos, they never claimed to and you can check their github to confirm. It just allows you to download them from googlevideo.com without going through youtube. There's a very easy way to demonstrate this with uMatrix, if you don't allow *.googlevideo.com nothing will play.

I didn't know the inner workings, my point still stands however. Their API is used to initiate the viewing, not a local API. Therefore there are no unique views per viewer. Even if there were google can't confirm that the views are actually unique through this method and ever since the AdNausium fiasco where advertisers went after google for not providing them with truly unique clicks they have to confirm the uniqueness of every view and click now, which makes their monetizaition system highly unstable through the use of AdNausium and services like invidio.us and, formerly, hooktube.
