Has a single scene or level of a game ever completely turned you off of it before?
In spec ops it was exceedingly obvious that this trench wasn't full of soldiers, but not only can you not NOT burn them, but if you shoot anywhere near them the game will make that explosion significantly bigger so it burns them. It's contrived, very easy to tell what's going on, and the aftermath is obnoxious. Prior to this I thought it was pretentious, after this I thought it was just completely incompetent.

i'm having a hard time thinking of an actual game now that you mention it but plenty of doom wads have hit me at just the wrong time and made me not want to bother with it's bullshit.

For fuck's sake, this again? You thought it was obvious because it fucking was. Walker ordered that phosphorus attack against everyone's protests. It was a godawful decision on his part from the start, and the trench was just the icing on the cake.
I don't get this obsession from retarded people to assume it was an ebin trick against their own moral fiber. You're watching a gung-ho military dumbass thinking he's a big hero and fucking up everything before your eyes. It is not fucking meta against you personally, on the very contrary, having the bridge scene be an obvious bad idea is meant to distanciate you from Walker.

Therein lies the problem. This is fine with a movie, as you are supposed to be a spectator. A video game, on the other hand, has immersion ruined when you force control out of the player’s hands by giving them shit for a decision
>but it was Walker’s actions
And by extension it is also the player’s actions. You can’t just give control of him for so much time then expect to be ripped from him so suddenly and nobody would mind.
If you weren’t supposed to be identifying with Walker, you should never have gotten control of him.

Not so much a single level, but whenever I feel the need to replay Mirror's Edge, I remember how much of a pain the control system is and leave it be.

Developer commentary is that you were supposed to feel bad/angry and that if you didn't like it you were supposed to stop playing.
>Once the Player disconnects from the reality of the situation, something truly horrible happens. And it hits Players in the gut, because now they have to face the consequences of their actions. They don’t get teleported to the next location. They have to face the human cost of their actions.
>There are 4 official endings and 1 unofficial ending. 1 in Konrad’s penthouse. 3 in the epilogue. And 1 in real life, for those players who decide they can’t go on and put down the controller.

A gurl I knew was crazy about the first Mass Effect. But I didn't like the looks of it, too generic and consoley. In the end I downloaded the pc version and got as far as 10 minutes into the game, where a male crewmember talks about his husband.

Fuck Taris. It's a piece of shit in game design that should and could have either been cut down or fleshed out. As it stands, it's a linear drag with the only choices in missions being "be mean" or "be good" and the only faction you are able to help is some faggoty "misunderstood" gang. Compounded is the fact that almost all of the missions are fetch quests and the only thing to break up the monotony is the janky swoop race and the bullshit arena that grants you dark side points for taking on Fett. Telos I can tolerate because you get a little taste of everything in Star Wars. Corporate espionage, seedy underworld criminal organization, bounty hunting, assassination, etc. with many of the missions having multiple ways of going about them other than "give bad man thing" or "give good man thing." Taris has you almost railroaded and the cut content mod can only fix so much. One of the worst offenders is the part where you need an Imp disguise to get to the lower levels. Without the mod, the only way to obtain them is either kill some Imperials or kill some Imperials. With the mod, you either kill some Imperials or sneak off with some uniforms while a group of soldiers are getting drunk at a party. When I do make it past Taris everything is fine, but multiple times have I started a character and put them down out of boredom. One good thing I can say about it is that you do fight your first Sith towards the end whereas in TSL you don't fight your first Jedi till the end of the first/second planet.

And therein lies the problem with spec ops.
With the notable exception of Sephiroth killing Aerith and even then, that event had repercussions in the mechanics, people don't give a shit about things that happen in cutscenes in video games
>hurr but you have to press button to progress
If you're not going to give me at least enough decision-making power to so much as pretend that I'm controlling what the character does, why demand input from me anyway, instead of letting me grab a glass of water and come back when you're done trying to play Hollywood and give me some actual fucking gameplay.

I was actually going to mention OS because the mines was the part of the game that made me lose interest. I would say that it's easy to pass the chicken conversation off since it's about eating things that can talk to you. The main character banter is probably the best part of the dialogue overall, granted that it isn't saying much considering that most of the game's writing is poor.
