Turns out the main artist behind the craft, one who is known for their "realistic pokemon" depictions, was actually hired for the movie. While their repertoire of images as a whole is full of nightmare monsters in he first place, their pokemon get a lot of attention as they are clearly based off of real world animals and have the fantasy elements blended with them.
However, the reason the things in the trailer look so fucking horrible is that they have the textures from these "realistic" pokemon placed on top of the classic shapes.
This is NO fucking different than those N64 games with the blocky characters but highly detailed textures that make it look fucking wrong.

Digimon would be better if it made more sense, every iteration didn't remake rules, and if digivolution trees were easier to understand/had consistency. That's really the biggest issue. Consistency. Even if the stories differ, Pokemon's games always play almost exactly the same. You know what to expect. With Digimon it feels like every game is different. Sometimes it's like Pokemon, an rpg, a racing game, strategy, or even like a Persona-lite game. Each time with weird differences in available Digimon in evolution trees. While having no real sense in how the games do or don't connect to each other. Plus the anime has dub problems to the point a lot of violence was cut from the dubbed shows and replaced with bad bad bad jokes. Though the Pokemon anime is almost just as bad in that regard.
Think about it like this too. People know what pokemon are. They're just animals with cool abilities. Living creatures that make sense to us. But Digimon are digital beings. But sometimes they need to eat. Sometimes the Digi World has elements of the real world for no reason. Digimon have no real sex. You don't feel the same bonding process because every Digimon can be replaced with just the data of the same or different Digimon. And most Digimon aren't cute enough to the same audience that plays pokemon.

When you break it down, it's a movie for kids and adults who grew up on the cartoony aesthetics anyways. Not to mention, the actors are going to be spending a lot of time standing on green screens reacting to tennis balls and actors in mocap suits anyways… So why bother going for some edgy, realistic look? Make them look nice. Render them in the highest quality you can, give them just a little more detail than usual, and call it a day. Like, look at Jibanyan's haramaki, how it has a faint woven texture.
No one who would watch these movies cares about how the pokemon would "realistically" look. No fan has ever bitched that a Charizard should have visible scales and more real-to-life wrinkling around his joints where his hide would bunch up. Kids definitely don't care about that shit. Even with this push for realism, they still fucked it up anyways. Small rodents tend to have smooth, flattened fur, not the fluffy coat of a long-haired cat. So they even fucked up their attempt at autistic realism.

Part of art direction 101 is that to imply "friendly" is rounded edges and brighter colors. The monsters in monster hunter, and most of the art by this guy, are full of hard edges and duller colors, which is how you can convey a "dangerous" or "unfriendly" design.
For this reason, monster hunter stories has a slightly different art style as a whole with everything being much more brightly colored and the monster partners being immature, thus with more rounded shapes to the design, as opposed to the adults that are harsh and jagged.

By using only bare bones aspects to get you to recognize the creatures and having most everything else being parts of either a real animal, it goes into the uncanny valley of something that is too real to call fake but not fake enough for you to feel safe about it.
