So, what’s your preferred mechanic of lockpicking, and what’s your most hated one?

Sideways Minigame Spilter cellmy personal favorite….a pity no one does it anymore

frontal minigameskyrim….kingdom come

Waiting Animation styx…SWAT4

Tapping minigamenutomb raider

Rotate and tap thief 3

Autopick any rpg when you have a lockpick in your inventory

Sync the thumbstickmetal gear survive

9bb829  No.15728384

Alpha Protocol had you putting a different amount of pressure on both L2 and R2 while moving the thumbstick and I fucking loved it

Thief, also due to the pressure of someone walking on on you.

I remember kinda liking how it was done in oblivion but that was because the clicking noises they had were pretty good, can't think of any other examples that stood out to me

"Sidways minigame" its like even when people read the OP they don't fully understand it. I swear kids these days are the least literate.

my bad, i was dwelling on how i liked the sound providing a sorta tactile feeling to it there and spaced that detail out

I feel that this is more important than some gayass mini game in Skyrim.

As far as realism goes, sideways minigame makes the most sense. That assuming they might be difficult in the first place, considering 9/10 locks can be picked with little to no effort using a jiggle key and tension bar. As a hilariously easy example, Masterlock padlocks- a widely recognized and respected name to people who know nothing about locks- are some of the easiest locks to pick and are sometimes sold with a lockpicking kit for practice.

Oblivion's pisses me off since it's totally wrong for how a pin tumbler lock is, even Thi4f comes closer. That and the speechcraft mini-game also served to impact negatively on the skill development since it offered you some way around it. To OOO's credit it at least addresses this partly for lockpicking by making them minimum skill based at hard/veryhard, but it still sucks compared to the simple but effective system in Morrowind, and even Thief 1&2. Thief Deadly Shadows might've been a neat mini-game except that too many of the locks used the same combination.

>>15728497

If the game didn't freeze time when you were picking it wouldn't matter.

I think it was the watchmen's video game that had the best lock picking.

63db1a  No.15728650

If the game is a proper RPG it should use proper statistic-based-chance based on character skill to determine success.

If it's an action game, I prefer the side-on view that simulates actually raising the pins manually, like in Oblivion.

>duke can't kick doors

Great example. Actually the only game I've seen with door forcing is Splinter Cell Chaos Theory where you can do that instead of picking them (don't) and in RTCW you can kick unlocked doors if they're hinged to open them quickly, at the expense of being noisy.

>>15728650

This. But don't model after Oblivion's mini-game because it's bad.

I know how flimsy most things are and how you can make many strong things flimsy with some leverage.

I personally like Oblivion's system because it takes a tiny bit of IRL skill rather than simply being RNG/savescum spam like morrowind or brain dead like skyrim. You don't have to grind out the skill just to pick locks, but leveling it still helps make it easier which is more or less in line with how most of the game's non-magic skills work.

>If the game didn't freeze time when you were picking it wouldn't matter.

But it does freeze time. It is purely to trick casuals to thinking that they are actually playing an RPG.

I just tried in case it was some detail I missed all these years, specifically the doors that swing inward into the cinema in the first episode. Kicking didn't do shit. Maybe that's a source port feature.

33ffa9  No.15730029

The Dark Mod's rhythm-based lockpicking system is the best one I've encountered. It's minimalistic and integrates well with the stealth gameplay and actually requires concentration. It's easy to fuck up lockpicking a door along the route of a guard's patrol path if you got weak nerves, and some level designers deliberately introduce loud ambient noise (e.g. running water) close to certain doors to make them more difficult to pick.

Actual lock picking feels more like a puzzle, a very sensitive and tiny puzzle.

The closest to get the feel was TES:IV Oblivion and it was still pretty bad. Might as well just do Auto picking.

On a similar note always liked how in Resident Evil 4 you could apply either 2 kicks to break a chained lock or just shoot it.

When in that valley area being chased by that El Giangti creature it was great to discover the latter worked in utter desperation.
