What gives with the wonky aiming in third-person shooters?

Second Sight and RE4 had great aiming and those were 6th gen games but aiming in 7th and 8th gen games adheres to an odd perspective where you aim with a crosshair in the center of the screen but your bullets always travel to that crosshair even if that means shooting someone who is standing right next to you and behind your character's line of fire. There are people who've played Red Dead Redemption 2, a recent game, and accidentally shot a captive in the foot because they were trying to shoot off his chains but the backwards aiming screwed them up.

How can developers not be bothered by this?

Fucking what? So the game doesn't actually calculate the path of the projectile or even trace a ray, it just hurts whatever is in the middle of the crosshair? That sounds like lazy or stupid programmers.

I get what you mean. After 6th gen most games also had poor kinaesthetics (or Game Feel(tm)) and it's has been bugging me ever since. Controls don't feel as tight or responsive anymore either. RE4 is a perfect example for that too, it made you feel in control of your actions every step of the way. Haven't encountered a next-gen game where the kinaesthetics were even half as good since.

Better question: what's with all the over-the-shoulder cancer in modern third-person shooters. We literally figured out how to deal with avatars getting in the way of aiming all the way back during the 5th generation. Are developers in mass really that fucking stupid?

RE4 is a terrible example. It uses fucking tank controls for fuck's sake, and the range of motion when aiming is severely hamstrung, almost like it's emulating an analog stick even when using a mouse (yes, the "HD" remaster does this as well). If you want to talk about good third person shooter controls and feel, especially in hit reactions, GTAIV.

1.Cover shooters are all shit

2.RE4 and 007 Everything or Nothing are the only good console third person shooters

3.Max Payne 1 and 2 did third person shooters the best

>over-the-shoulder cancer

I thought I was the only one who hated this shit. It irks me how my character can see well on his right but is basically blind to anything happening to his left. If that was limited to pirate games where the character only has one eye it would be amusing but it isn't.

I remember dead space 3 having a dedicated button to switch from the view of your right shoulder to your left shoulder, bad game but nice quality of life features.

OTS is basically first person but you can see your own neck. first person is also cancer. If your third person game doesn't have the character directly in the bottom center it's shit

It's retarded to go over the shoulder and not make the player character 75% transparent.

I mean, shit, just make the player character 100% transparent and you can see the whole damn screen.

Indeed, over the shoulder defeats one of the fundamental purposes of the third-person perspective which is the see your player avatar and get an intuitive sense of how close it can get to other objects to gauge platforming and keeping distance from potential hazards.

I have seen the feature in many 3rd person shooters. Those with fixed views should be considered shit.

The EDF games are amazing, but they're more about intelligent sandbox mission design and encounter design than complex core mechanics or "game feel".

I thoroughly enjoyed playing the Army of Two series with my roommate. The aiming got a little bit wonky at times, but once we changed the sensitivity the game worked like a charm. Haven't played Devil's Cartel though because from what I heard it's the worst one in the series. It was a good series though, as ridiculous Salem and Rios were, it was a lot better of a duo-TPS compared to Gears of War if you ask me.

Two other TPS that I enjoyed in the recent decade were Vanquish and Max Payne 3, the latter of which had some shit aiming that you had to get used to. Those speed-runs look wild though, if any anons actually enjoy watching speed-runs. Vanquish however, is really fun, really fast, and really edgy, based Platinum Games always coming through with their own take on a genre.

Lastly, since it is basically a TPS, what do you guys think about EDF, from the clips I have seen it looks like a fun one to have. I really wanted to dig into this franchise but I don't know where to start, should I start from the beginning or should I just wait for the newest game to come out and get cracked?

Shit, that was a fuckin fun ass game.

I unlocked shit just to play as insectoids in multiplayer.
