Haven't seen one in a while so I figured why not create one?

What games are you playing? Are you enjoying them? What do you like about them and what about them do you feel could be improved or better suit your tastes?

Similar 2D-styled games (like that Vagrant game or w/e it is) are also encouraged to be discussed.

Also please try to spoiler shit for those who haven't played these lovely games yet.

For my part I've played:

>Dragon's Crown

>Muramasa Rebirth

>Odin Sphere Leifthraisir

Looking forward to playing Grand Knight's History and Eventually GrimGrimoire, though I know next to nothing about either of them except for the latter being an RTS, and especially excited about 13 Sentinels, though I worry for its fate on the Vita. Sony needs to burn for this.

My thoughts on them based on what I've played of them thus far:

For Dragon's Crown I enjoyed what I played a pretty good amount (played the main story with the Amazon; didn't go completionist on it yet or anything with that very high-leveled requirement stuff such as repairing all the statues; only did 1 so far and stopped for the time being). The fanservice and exaggerated style were beautiful and great. Amazon's unarmed combat, especially when it came to her downward aerial attack… hoo boy.

The combat was slick and satisfying; it was quite a lot of fun to see how long I could keep myself in the air between dodges and aerial attacks and to keep combos going as long as humanly possible, juggling enemies was also a lot of fun as well as using powerful moves. The perk that makes you go stronger and faster the longer you keep your combo going absolutely helped this feeling very much, as you feel like a power-hungry maniac god that only craves destruction with how fast and how much you keep pummelling your opponents. The gameplay was far too much pure fun and that's great.

One thing I didn't like was as a general rule the power smash not feeling worthwhile to use due to how long it took to get your weapon back and how much more at risk you were without it, on top of you having to manually pick up your weapon from a specific location which could easily fuck with the flow of combat. I rarely bothered to use it as a result. Something that wasn't so much a gripe as it is just unusual is how much more powerful magical consumables such as rings were compared to shit like potions. I was having trouble with the final boss and I'd never used magical consumables for the whole game, but I finally caved and decided to incorporate it into my attack, and I beat it on my first try with most of my party still alive after it. The sheer difference in power was shocking and hilarious.

There was clearly a lot of love and effort put into this game. All the secret areas, little interactions like harassing townspeople getting you put in jail and whatnot, quests that somehow made the use of a 2D plane so effectively despite it seeming so limiting on a first glance. The animated CGs were absolutely stunning and were excellent little bonus rewards for quests that might otherwise have felt

Ironically though, I felt the story/plot and characters were a weaker part. The player character options didn't have much depth to them in terms of backstory or anything, which is fine since they're easily recognizable archetypes from shit that came from the days of D&D, old school RPGs and shit like Diablo and whatnot; it just would've been a bit nice to give them just a bit more personality than the very little explicit stuff they were given. Their designs told a lot of their story, and to their credit all their designs were excellent even including minor ones like the fairy and Rannie. I haven't done a full completionist on a character yet, so there's very likely more than I think; this is just from the from the standard main story rather than the postgame "main story" which seems quite significant.

I suppose that's just part of being a western-styled and western-based game, where its more focused on the world itself and the combined sum of its parts than to intensely give strong perspective from any single individual character, which is fine I guess.

Anyways that's enough autism for one OP, I'll probably continue this stream of autism later for the other games I've played as well, what are your own thoughts anons?

Grand Knight's History is quite fun, but severely hampered by the fact that half the shit is locked behind a dead online mode.

>but severely hampered by the fact that half the shit is locked behind a dead online mode.

Well that's worrying. Is it more postgame or additional content, or shit that you would expect in the main game?

I'd also be surprised a mod or a hack doesn't exist to allow you to play through it somehow if its barring you from some kind of content.

>What games are you playing?

Not playing any at the moment, last time was a couple of Hard mode runs of Leifthrasir (these games really go ape shit on the higher difficulty settings).

Are you enjoying them?

Sunk a lot of hours into the ones I've played; DC is easily my favorite PS3 game.

What do you like about them and what about them do you feel could be improved or better suit your tastes?

It's been a while but I remember not being a fan of DC using the attack button for dashing and blocking. Overall, I think what they need is essentially more content.

>One thing I didn't like was as a general rule the power smash not feeling worthwhile

Depends. Double PS build is one of the best things for Dwarf.

>I felt the story/plot and characters were a weaker part.

It is. The character has no involvement and the NPCs don't have much going for them besides design.

>what are your own thoughts?

Still mad at Georgie boy over DC Pro.

Still waiting for them Muramasa Rebirth ports.

Don't think I'll be getting 13 Sentinels (if it ever comes out).

You can play the online mode offline, but it's populated by shitty NPCs. The way it's intended to work is that you level your squires in the single player campaign/story mode

and after level 10 or so they are eligable for knighthood/"online" mode. You can have a shitload of knights, but only 4 squires at a time, so if you want to replace one of your

archers with a wizard, you got to dump him and grind your new character with no way of switching back if shit doesn't work out.

Also, you are hard-locked into one (1) save file, so no jumping around the different factions. I tried fiddling with it, but between the files in the mem-stick and loadstates, shit got wonky.

But maybe I'm just too retarded.

Anyway, there's a patched/translated .iso floating around, so I very much recommend you to just play through the campaign.

Usually their remakes are almost always better due to additional content, not changing the core in any way and if they do they provide an option to play the older version, and improved performance/resolution

Odin Sphere Leifthraisir is the best version of Odin Sphere, Muramasa Rebirth is the best version of Muramasa, dunno about Dragon's Crown Pro though, but I would assume its better though that one might've been more lower effort than the others due to how fast it was developed and pushed out

The others are single-platform only afaik, GrimGrimoire on the PS2, Grand Knight's History on the PSP, Kumantachi on the DS, and Princess Crown on the Saturn.

How does that work out? He gets to use 2 PS's before losing control of his weapons or something? I don't know much about him or his playstyle.

>It's been a while but I remember not being a fan of DC using the attack button for dashing and blocking

Its kind of a funny trait that seems present in a lot of their games, putting so much emphasis on one button. I'm surprised at how much they managed to squeeze out of it, but it does feel limiting in terms of how many things one can do simultaneously.

>Overall, I think what they need is essentially more content.

What do you mean by more content? Just more postgame content period? Or…?

>Still mad at Georgie boy over DC Pro.

I think that was either an Atlus initiative pushed unto them to print more money, or Vanillaware securing funds while they develop 13 Sentinels, because of how out-of-nowhere it seemed to come.

Muramasa rebirth's combat is exactly the same as muramasa the demon blade, but it got 4 extra campaign DLCs where you play as a loli oni, a vengeful catgirl, a peasant farmer with a ghost wife and an edgy faggot ninja, it also got a complete retranslation that gets rid of the forced memes and unfunny cancer, everyone was speaking like zed kids even though the game is set in feudal japan, shit was almost NISA tier, it's still vanillaware's best game and even the cucked wii version is worth playing.

Odin sphere leifthrasir uses the muramasa engine, which means you can do crazy combos with every single character and completely shit on certain bosses thanks to the enhanced mobility most notably the three wizards and the cauldron, you will hardly use items now, even though they used to be crucial to handle crowds or get rid of certain annoying enemies like the slimes, the PS2 game is not worth playing unless you wanna check out just how mediocre the combat used to be, at least it had dual audio and looked gorgeous.

Dragon's crown pro is the exact same game but with "" remastered""" soundtrack and """4k""" graphics only notable if you have a soystation 4 pro and a 4k tv, either emulate it on pc or pirate it on vita, it doesn't matter, the ps4 port offers no new content because it was made to raise funds for their newest game.

Grim Grimoire hasn't gotten a port yet so go play the ps2 original, it's not a beat em up though, it's a RTS with tons of yuri and a story that makes no sense until the very end, mostly because the protagonist was relying on everyone thinking she was mildly retarded in order to ruse the villain.

There's also princess crown which looks and plays like a prototype odin sphere, someone's working on a translation for the saturn original but the psp port has more content and slightly touched up graphics, i played it way back then and gave up on the castle because i had no idea where to go.

>Odin Sphere Leifthrasir

Probably the textbook example of a god-tier-remake. By Atlus nonetheless!

Original game had: Awesome visuals, grande story, top tier music, okay interface design, slow-ass progression system, okay combat with one single glaring mistake that totally threw off the flow of the combat

<tl;dr: You played the game DESPITE the gameplay

Remake: Left everything the way it was (visuals, music, story), revamped the interface a little more aesthetic, completely changed the progression system to be more fluent, fixed the combat by correcting that one mistake (e.g. they put in fucking custom command buttons like smash)

And to top it all off, for anybody who goes like BUT EVERYTHING WAS BETTER BACK THEN BAAW, they made a classic mode that leaves everything unchanged, because why not.

It superseedes the original game in nearly every possible way known to man.

Bonus points: The remake's name "Leifthrasir" is relevant to the game's setting and story.

IT'S LIKE GAME DEVS CAN LEARN FROM THEIR PAST MISTAKES!

>What do you mean by more content?

For DC, a few more areas and classes (Cleric, Dark Elf and Barbarian ideally). What I thought Pro was going to be.

For Leifthrasir, the game is lacking a "strength character", someone to just brutalize everything into submission, the closest is Cornelius who's the most melee oriented but that's not even close. I think a playable Onyx would have been pretty cool.

The game kinda works like Bayonetta, as you move through the level you'll have fights that are ranked and a a few scattered ones that aren't (basically opportunities to refill mana), there's a style meter that starts at S and automatically diminishes and you maintain it with all sorts of ways like combo count, number of skills used, no damage, time, overkilling a enemy etc. Skills are implemented pretty well - after unlocking, you assign them to a shortcut of your choosing, ranging from d-pad direction+button, analog direction+button and d-pad motion+button (usually half circles and quarter circles). This later thing is something I wish more action games had, a few specials to expand the pool of moves (the only other ones I can recall that do this somewhat significantly are DMC3-4, Onimusha 4 and maybe the Yakuza games but those tend to be situational or meter dependent).

>Odin Sphere: Leifthraisir which is the first vanillaware game I've played.

If you've got a Vita, Muramasa Rebirth is really good. Also an example of a developer actually making cost worthy DLC in the form of Genroku Legends. Though, Aksys (as NA publisher) seems to want to punish aftermarket purchases these days in no longer marking down the DLC itself in favor of doing so for the digital complete version instead, thus netting them more profit (shame there's no physical complete version, even as an import). And the Vita's piratable for anyhow, provided you have/get a system with hackable OFW.

>Giving Aksys money.

>I'm wondering how Vanillaware is going to handle with Soyny's soy filled policy.

Not like they're stuck with Sony, consider Muramasa was Wii first, and I know they've had a history with Sega (who admittedly don't own their own line of systems anymore) prior to GrimGrimoire. Granted, if they did go to Nintendo in light of how things are going, I'd still be worried about if NoA might try to enforce "standards" down the line. Even if they've been lax on third party published games of late, I'm sure they'd love to have the same power over everything Sony's American branch does these days.

typically it means that the devs accounted for various degrees of player skill. You can usually assume that normal is the intended design difficulty, easy is for people who keep dying, and hard is for experts or masochists who are unsatisfied with the challenge from normal

exceptions to this include Doom, in which the 2nd hardest difficulty, Ultra Violence, is considered the canon difficulty and everything below it is either easier enemy-wise or has a few niceties for convenience in the level architecture (one level in episode 1, for instance, has a light leading you to the exit on Hurt Me Plenty and below)

A different genre of game and a game who's difficulty is so grossly overrated by so many people that it has reached meme status, and one that also still has higher difficulty settings present in it; they're just all locked behind subsequent completions of the game instead of just giving the player a higher difficulty choice from the start.

The fact that it doesn't allow you to choose other NGs besides the one you're currently on after beating it once already is already pretty fucking stupid, beating it once should unlock all NG+ difficulties.

Dark Souls is also a very different genre of game entirely.

I remember restarting those fights so many times - the frost bens, the riders and even the slime kings. The whole thing was pretty much riding on the opening seconds, usually by getting the flame pillar on the right spot for the bens or getting both enemies in the whirlwind and a poise break for the others.

The slimes are pretty great for farming points (name eludes me atm) but Hard mode adds those goddamned evil eyes that can one-shot you, together with all the other shit that's happening on screen, it doesn't take much to take a stray shot.

But incidentally, kudos for the retry option, the game has a lot of these quality of life things that make those frustrating moments a lot more tolerable. Again, more shit other devs could learn from.

Gotta admit I never got much mileage out of that one besides stacking them for leveling up and then turn them into Whirlwinds. The later and poison are the ones I use most but others had their uses - flame pillar rapes the shit out of the plant mini-boss, ice spirits is overall really good (for me it's essential for late game Hard mode Wagner where you have a gazillion coming for your ass), fire spirits is great against bosses you're usually very close to etc.

But yeah, the game is frustrating at moments but then there's those times where you style the shit out of everyone and come out without a scratch. Again why I say the game is 2D CUHRAYZEEE because it's that exact same feeling I get when playing DMC or Bayo.

Nyet, I played on a Vita. Though that's a really nice feature. In a different world where Sony wasn't censoring, circumstances were different for me personally, and it had more games I cared about I might've ended up getting a PS4, maybe.

For various specific reasons I can't really buy non-handheld consoles for the foreseeable future. Its just my rather solid PC and handhelds for me.

>>15730736

Depending on how western-focused the work is and how good or bad the dub is, I can prefer dubs to subs at times. Both were actually good from what I tested of each, but I just felt like going with english audio since to me it just "fit" more with it to me.

>Again why I say the game is 2D CUHRAYZEEE because it's that exact same feeling I get when playing DMC or Bayo.

Its too satisfying of a feeling; I had it even stronger in Muramasa because of less reliances on things comparable to the special abilities in Odin Sphere. It feels like you "earn" it more when you keep striking them with such things; plus the movement was so well-fucking done in that game, especially the dash system.

I still loved it very much in Odin Sphere though, especially during aerial combos and because of how many forms a combo could take because of said specials (though sometimes they felt almost like a 'press button to brutally rape opponent's asshole' type thing, which can still be fun of course but that's something I would do less often personally)

Mercedes was sort of the odd-one out in that game. Outright broken once you get past the start if I'm being honest because the power of flight and long range is just too much. I didn't expect her to be fun for those reasons, but she ended up to be entertaining to play, especially with how satisfying her big bullets (Whatever they're called) and psyphers felt to use.

>>15730750

Cornelius as a fighter was just fucking hilarious

>that fucking aerial spin that would go on forever

>the fact that you could combo his side-drill psypher attack into it

>weaving in other attacks in between this shit to stay in the air if necessary

>you could basically juggle enemies for 2-4 screens worth or more if you did it right

God that was too satisfying and hilarious; as soon as you could launch a miniboss or even a boss into the air with that and get it going, it was just like a nonstop fucking train of pain. The aerial combos in that game were some of my favorite things to do, period.

On a somewhat related note, someone I feel I never unlocked potential for is Oswald with his berserker mode. Its so ridiculously fast and crazy that I didn't know what to do; its too hard to control. It felt like I would just sort of create this whirling circle of death, but it was sometimes hard to keep the combos going just because of how fucking fast he was and how hard it was to aim any of his attacks as a result. I sort of am tempted to see what a player who's mastered Oswald's berserker looks like, as that seems like it would be quite entertaining.

Fair enough. The JP cast has a lot of favorites so I'm biased. That said, the one performance that IMO really makes a difference is King Valentine, the JP voice work really makes him sound old and decrepit while the EN voice he sounds like he's in his 30s. Also Velvet uses -'sama' when addressing Cornelius because bitch knows where her place is unlike Gwendolyn and her feminist bullshit. :^)

>Cornelius

My start with him was basically a recreation of the God Hand comic. "What the fuck? I don't wanna play as some gaywad rab-HOLY SHIT! I'M THE MOTHERFUCKIN' POOKA OF THE NORTH STAR, NIGGERS!"

>Oswald

I mostly just juggled with the kick and frenzy slash, usually open with Nightmare Blast to break poise and launch enemies. A thing I loved about Oswald was the sword toss, you hold the button and that shit stays in place spinning and then dart forward to grab it. Fuckin' stylish.

I didn't get to the point of hearing King Valentine's voice in JP while I was checking the differences between them, but I loved his VA in english. He didn't sound very old, yes, but somehow his tone as an angry, brutal, crazed, ambitious and commanding king was still very much ingrained into his acting, and considering that he was undead rather than alive but elderly, it didn't bother me much given that he still put out a rousing performance. His spirit as a mad and terrifying king is still very much strong in the acting; in fact he was a contender for my favorite VA in the english bunch, though ironically he's barely credited or known for his work in that game.

Gwendolyn was a funny and strange character (though not in a good way at the start, more to laugh at her immense personality issues and feel angry when you realize how deep-seated they fucking were). At least she eventually learned to stop being such a fucking tool, literally and figuratively. That was nice.

I also felt very much the same way about Cornelius before I started with him as well. Thankfully that changed pretty damn quickly.

I really wished they had done DLC for Dragon's Crown like they did for Muramasa Rebirth, giving you new characters with more maps. Hell, they could've used existing characters.

>rannie as thief/rogue, attacks fast but can't take a hit and low attack, and already has high natural adroit hands, item repair and deep pockets

>tiki either a joke strong character or assists rannie in his combos acting as a dual character; she has high magic and tiny hitbox but she goes down hard if someone hits her; rescuing fairies work as assists so it's a swarm of tiny fairies killing a lich or the ancient dragon

>milk jug maiden and father/son villagers as joke characters or now they're the ones selling you stuff because Morgan went on vacation

>samuel as a paladin

>princess as a magic knight, maybe introduce light magic

>dark elf more focused on magic than physical attacks compared to vanilla elf, but the mounts have additional attacks and can tank more hits before going paws up

>Playable skeletons and wood golem, now with added attacks

What's your opinion on the Vagrant? I like it, it's a discount Vanillaware game so it works. Only real complaint would be the music, it's all over the place. If it were fantasy with some modern elements, I'd understand the need for metal music, bit then they also added EDM-ish music. The artwork is sometimes weird, some CGs are good but then others have weird faces or body proportions, and the conversations would've had more impact of the characters didn't just stand idly blurting their lines the majority of time.

That said, I like the gameplay, and a detail I liked is how when you're at stores and buy something, the people are almost kissing your ass, but if you don't, some of them insult you for being a poorfag, while others have more mild reactions. The gameplay is simple but fun, the girl reacts well, and the attacks have nice variety or can be used for different situations. I hate games that have very telegraphed obvious attacks, but some of the attacks from the bosses here are the opposite, so I end up getting hit.

I remember a fan-translator doing a review of Odin Sphere PS2 (including the script's accuracy and dub quality, the dual audio and full voicing making the former easy), and finding the localization to be amongst the best he'd seen at the time, even if the English voicing was a "Bleach Reunion" as he put it. Personally though I still like making use of the dual audio and playing with the JP dub, it being one of the few times Atlus actually went to the extra expense of including it. Actually makes me curious why they relented that one time back then.

>though ironically he's barely credited or known for his work in that game.

I did some looking out of curiosity, and went to wiki for a name after btva didn't provide credits for the character. Name set off the j-dar, but looking more, he seems to be some degree nog. Could be a niggerstien.

>Gwendolyn was a funny and strange character (though not in a good way at the start […]).

I felt that way about Oswald, who came off as a bit of a "milady" fedora tipper in Gwendolyn's book, until you finally get to his own book later and see that it's more a case of him going through similar abuses and being treated as not a person, but an object and weapon.

>>15731691

>Guess they went out for it when publishing other devs' work.

Taking a quick look at JP/Dual Audio wiki, their only listed Dual Audio games there are Disgaea PS2 (NA version only), Odin Sphere/Leifthrasir, Dragon’s Crown (partial dual audio) and Persona 5, while Tears to Tiara II, Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble, DT2, and Fate/Extra were Japanese audio only. Certainly more towards third party than games they're handling for their own Japanese branch, but not really that much. Like most companies, they tend towards English only when voicing is applicable, even for games/series where dual audio or even Japanese only would make sense (such as Persona being explicitly in Japan). Of course, that wiki might well be incomplete, seeing as it certainly doesn't mention Riviera, and you could be right that it's more an "on demand thing" (from the devs/prior publishers, not fans). But I'd think most of the Japanese rights holders wouldn't really care if we get stuck with only English audio, when western sales are merely considered a bonus on top of the native ones unless it's a really big, popular series, but even those have often been English only until recently (admittedly there's a storage size difference between eras to also factor).

eca0af  No.15731926

>>15731794

There's such a wiki? Interesting.

NISA probably has the highest amount of dual audio releases considering their ps1/ps2 offerings, but then again it's NISA - they made the half-assed dub in Ar Tonelico 2 along with its buggy translation that needed a fix from the fans…

Xseed also gives dual audio options whenever it is possible, few games being exceptions (Trails), but a recent patch added dual audio for PC at least.

Atlus hasn't been dual-audio centric for Persona, though. Thankfully PS2 modding is easy and thanks to Henkaku, P4G can be undubbed too. P5 having dual audio was quite the shock, and I honestly doubt it was done only as an apology for the release delay… Sucks that it's a free DLC, though.

As for what you said about the JP rightsholders, Sega getting Atlus seems to be a win-win in the long run, considering how the latest SegaSammy Holdings release mentions the outstanding performance of P5 overseas, which also emphasizes one of the key reasons being the Atlus localization staff working on it. and I still laugh at all these SJWeebs complaining about P5 having a 'bad' translation.

Yeah, here.

http://japdualaudio-in-videogames.wikia.com/wiki/Japanese/Dual_audio_in_Japanese_video_games_Wiki

Also has pages for games that people ask about having dual audio that don't, as well as another for games with dual text. Differentiates between dual audio only being present for certain releases as well (usually PAL versions getting English only).

>NISA probably has the highest amount of dual audio releases considering their ps1/ps2 offerings, but then again it's NISA - they made the half-assed dub in Ar Tonelico 2 along with its buggy translation that needed a fix from the fans…

Their push for dual audio since Disgaea 2 PS2 is one of the few things to praise them on, but that doesn't make them a good company, nor can they even manage to do that right at times, as you said. Whoever it was at Sega or Red Entertainment (could have been NISA themselves, but I doubt they're that smart) forcing them to do a two disc release of Sakura Wars 5 after their audio excising from AT2 made a good call.

>Xseed also gives dual audio options whenever it is possible, few games being exceptions (Trails), but a recent patch added dual audio for PC at least.

Like Atlus, I wouldn't really say that. Notable exceptions listed being Akiba’s Trip: Undead and Undressed (being set in Japan, it was a good choice to get the licensing to), Corpse Party (JP audio only), Killer is Dead, and the Senrans (JP audio only). I know for Falcom games they’ve claimed that Falcom has had some clause that western versions cannot license the Japanese audio, but I’ve seen people dispute that as nothing but a lie, what with Aksys and NISA getting at it for Tokyo Xanadu and Ys VIII from what I’ve read. I do think I've seen something that the PS4 rereleases of Cold Steel I and II will be dual audio though, so I don't know what's up with that restriction anymore. They’ve been around since the mid-late PS2 era, so they’ve got a library where, assuming there was voicing in the first place, the vast bulk is English only (at least that makes some amount of sense for SH:FtNW though; half the game being set in the US, and the entire thing in the Americas).

>Sega

>win-win

For dual audio, maybe, considering they did so even for stuff like Sonic Adventure and Shadow the Hedgehog back when, and quickly learned a lesson when it came to Yakuza, and have kept it up for various games over the years (SRR of recent). But fuck how Atlus games have been inundated with DLC since they got bought by Sega

Considering the fit western media pitched over Dragon's Crown, while I'm not sure 13 Sentinels would be apt to have as lewd of designs, maybe they ought to be considering options for release on another platform than the PS4, unless they want SCEA to run them through the censorship-ringer even in Japan (and lose them both their abroad and local consumerbases)?

As for the Vita itself, sadly a company admitting to fucking up on their own is seen as a weakness rather than sign of wanting to improve, thus in this case you get the years of doubling down from Sony, at least out here, of it not being a system with a market, even though it was their own actions that pretty much killed interest in it.

Sony gave up on the Vita within the first 6 months of its life, and then paid it lip service for 3 years and fucked off forever, occasionally trying to kill it off with cancerous fucking decisions.

They won't release it on any platform besides PS4. Vanillaware hasn't had a non-Sony release in over a decade. Porting would cost even more time, resources and money at this stage in time, and the developers would have likely less if not no experience with either programming for, or porting to the Switch or the laughable PC industry in Japan. The Switch is its best chance but its not likely to get ported to On top of this, Atlus never does PC releases for any of their games ever. After Nintendo, they guard their games more zealously than anyone else.

God, I'm so fucking disgusted by this.

All I wanted from Sony this year was for them to not do anything like they usually do, but instead they just fucking turned off the Vita's life support and are taking a gigantic fucking shit over its currently dying body.

Wouldn't surprise me if SCEA starts forcing censorship patches to already released games that need "fixing." I can only hope some rich Nip that's a fan of those sort of games Sony's been destroying gets angry enough over it to try to put together a new company and vidya system that caters to likeminded people's interests. Doubt such would get a release in the west though (let alone a western branch that operates on a "no censorship" mindset); not like the media here would properly promote a system that they'd feel stands for everything they're against.

The Vita and 3DS XL were already straddling the acceptable lines for the largest sizes a handheld could be, the Switch just took a fat-dude's cannonball into a kiddie pool.

Biggest problem is that it's intentional now, not even just some boneheaded moves that maybe they'd see were mistakes. They don't seem to want the stigma of being friendly to fans of niche Japanese games, their developers, and the publishers that might want to release games as intact as possible, so they're actively doing their part to get them to leave of their own accord. It's a massive "fuck you" being implied without them even coming out and saying so directly.

>"Western fans want uncensored releases for lewd games and (some) publishers are willing? Fuck them."

>"The moonspeaking base can just import and fan-translations are a thing? Fuck the Japanese original releases and their fanbases too."

>"People still want the Vita as an option and script-rip patches are a thing? Fuck you, we don't want to support the system anymore, no alternatives for you."

Admittedly the latter might be more a decision Vanillaware or Atlus themselves have made than one Sony's pushed them toward, but it still feels like the entire thing is one big passive-aggressive bird being flipped. Western and eastern fans of niche games don't want to tolerate censorship, forcing it makes developers want to look elsewhere because why bother with it if it's not going to sell, and the dropped sales/preorders hurts the publishers that even considered picking the games up in the first place, as if punishment for their insolence. Sony wants a Western majority, weebfree library and audience by the PS5 debut? They might just get it.

In all seriousness though, has there ever been a vidya company that's pulled a purposeful "get the fuck out, you're not needed anymore" on a significant portion of their customerbase? Besides Konami, I mean (and even then I don't know if it compares because Konami doesn't have their own line of systems; Sony's decision impacting numerous companies as opposed to the damage being contained to one).

I've seen people claim that they've been turning around of late, but I don't know how much faith to put in that, and I wouldn't trust them at this point regardless. They were certainly shitters during the bulk of the WiiU and 3DS eras (what does that even count as, Gen 7.5?). Part of why I haven't bothered with their systems after the Wii and DS. Not that they don't have a history of being censor happy clean back to the NES and internally against publishing games that aren't easy to sell. But I'm talking a company actually going out of the way to purge a good chunk of their base, loss of profits be damned, and not just in one region. NoA probably wishes they had as much control of NoJ, and the worldwide library on their line of systems as a whole, that Sony's western branches now have.

Serious talk: does the PSTV play games like a normal Vita would, because that's the cheapest way to play Muramasa Rebirth.

50af6c  No.15732907

>>15732898

I think any game that doesn't require touch input should. But even though they did start to have the cover arts mention being compatible, obviously that doesn't help for knowing if games released prior to that were (Muramasa Rebirth for example). There's probably a list somewhere of what works natively, and it wouldn't surprise me if hackability has further increased the roster beyond what was intended, but I can't say for sure.

Vita truly had a hard life

If anything that just means I couldnt care less about a 3.69+ hack between this and SCEA doing its darnest to censor nip games even for japanese players themselves. To give the middle finger to western weebs would be one thing (shit has become a routine at this point), but why they're willing to destroy the japanese domestic market for purely suicidal western political-driven reasons is simply out of my comprehension. Then again I've yet to understand the insanity of leftist/liberal parasites.

The Switch is certainly the best option for japanese devs now, but I would be cautious at the fact western parasites might try to subjugate NoJ, like they managed to to do with SCEJ.

>>15732898

It can play Vanillaware games fine, the PSTV just doesnt support touch-based games by default, and some earlier/launch games titles in the West arent supported (especially NISA-localized shit).

I don't want it to be a visual novel style game with occasional gameplay and I really hope the gameplay is good like Muramasa, Dragon's Crown or Odin's Sphere remake. Though the glimpse we got looks like some kind of weird strategy game, if that's even a glimpse of gameplay at all.

We live in dark times where middleware lives or dies on preorders. Digital distribution is flooded with shitndie shovelware. Retail is restricting their shelf space to triple A games for the masses. Middleware lives or dies by their audiences or until their publisher screws them over. And now Sony is fucking the middleware audience by demanding censorship. Nintendo may not be the best alternative, PC is. However I understand Atlus's reluctance of publishing on Steam, a western owned platform.

SEGA might not even need to make a new console. SEGA could just make a storefront like Steam on PC for niche Japanese publishers to have a chance with a curated market free of western influence. This may have to come at the cost of console blacklisting though. But as far as nip devs are concerned consols are censorship.

Asking couldn't hurt but I think it would be shrugged off especially if directed at the western branches. They'd also probably waste a lot of time and money wining and dining potential partners, I imagine Atlus and VW is just a phone call away but others would be more complicated.

I guess the idea is letting them know consumers are not okay with the current state of affairs and, in turn, ask them if they are okay with getting raids from the Soystapo.

Sega could come out of nowhere to win this console generation if they released a system now. Even if all they did was yank all the Fatlus stuff away from Sony and announce a new Sanic, they'd be off to a good start.

For maximum effect, they should:

>Have free online (since it's just gonna be P2P anyway).

>Have Jet Set Radio 3 as a launch title (and, if they can bribe Capcom, Power Stone 3).

>And speaking of 3's: no matter what the Sanic game they launch with actually IS, call it Sonic Adventure 3.

If they did these few simple things - and followed Nintendo's pattern of having somewhat underpowered, inexpensive hardware that it's easy to develop for - they could absolutely murder Sony.

I wouldn't go that far since they'd keep the AAA shit normalfags love plus 3rd party devs that love kiking the shit out of consumers like Capcom but it could cripple them, steal that weeb niche that's not too big but certainly faithful. Though I lived those years it's kinda weird imagining going back to it, back when exclusives were the rule and not the exception. Back when each system was remarkably distinct.

What about an online store for PC instead to give Steam competition on the same platform. You have to download Epic Games and Origin launchers to play Fortnite and EA games on PC anyway. I'm sure most PC casuals are used multiple clients and store fronts by now. I don't see the point of a new console because it's another wall garden PC anyway. What PC needs is another competitive store front.

306275  No.15733991

Sage for double post, but this also just occurred to me. What about also releasing SEGA OS as a stand alone operating system for PCs for consumers to build their own SEGA consoles? In Japan these can be released as SEGA PCs with the hardware built in like a console. But for the west SEGA PCs can be released but also the OS can be installed for home built hardware.

e0f1bd  No.15734012

>Actually thinking Sega can make a new console

Delusional

Sega Sammy has no money for that kind of investement and even if they did pandering to normalfags would be the key to see that investment mony back which would lead to the same exact problems we see on Soyny and Nintendon't nowadays.

This besides the fact that Sega has been third party for years and got out of near bankrupcy thanks to it, they'll never take that risk again.

You're seeing through rose tinted glasses and not approaching this realistically at all.

2b1986  No.15734025

>>15733966

Steam certainly does need competition, but I don't know if creating yet another rights-restricting storefront is the answer.

Also, gaming PCs are almost unheard of in Japan. It's surprising, but even in the present day, many Japanese households don't even have a computer - internet access is something you do from your phone, and games that can be played on PCs are mostly going to be fan-made things or simply the kind of stuff that couldn't be released on consoles (ie, hentai). Ergo, the PC market is a lot smaller.

>>15733939

Okay, perhaps murdering Sony is a bit too much to hope for, but they would certainly outpace them in Japan, which is what matters when it comes to uncensored weeb games.

And yes, it would actually be nice to have a system built almost entirely on exclusives again. That's a surefire path to success that Nintendo mastered with the Wii and then forgot about; everyone had "a PS3 and a Wii" or "a 360 and a Wii". Because it was inexpensive and DIFFERENT from the other consoles.

>>15734012

Valid point. Sega is just the only one with the brand recognition to really be able to pull off such a thing. I suppose it could also be accomplished if another company wanted to break into the market and paid Sega a boatload of money to use their name.

(This actually happened in Brazil. Also, had Microsoft actually had the brains to disguise the Xbox as a new Sega system, they might actually have succeeded instead of becoming an irrelevant third wheel that only Americans care about.)

A new console is out of the question sure. And so is an OS obviously. The OS would be a Linux-based fan community project anyway most likely. That said, a new storefront wouldn't be too much work. This could be a dirty tactic but SEGA could simply have versions of games without Denuvo on their store while versions with Denuvo would be on Steam. Though I have no idea how licensing would work. I do know the storefront will not be always online to play outside online games. If SEGA were to compete as a platform holder again then they would do so as a digital storefront, not a console. They can still have multi-plat games on consoles. Those games can be linked with the SEGA account for an "enhanced experience" like achievement sharing on multiple platforms.

>>15734025

The storefront can be combined with the mobile app store so that both PC and mobile apps can be shopped in the same app either through PC or mobile. Though depending on what platform you're on the app will prioritize marketing PC or mobile but you can search all platforms regardless. A good storefront is fast, responsive, doesn't waste your time, and lets you find what you want quickly while giving you information on things you may be interested in on the side. Plus, unlike Steam, SEGA won't have as much competition for shovelware so smaller third party Japanese devs who don't want to publish on Steam at risk of censorship can sell in SEGA's store instead and still retain their own publishing rights.

I bought it on a whim when I found out they revamped the levelling system started playing the remake today.

I already had experience with the original – it was a terrible game in every way except for the visuals.

>use photons to grow the plants to eat the fruits to level up your character so you have enough HP to not die

>you need those same photons to level up your weapon or else you do no damage to anything

>you must balance these two well or grind stages to be able to proceed

Oblivion-tier levelling system right there, although not as bad.

Thankfully the remake fixes this and also adds spells and extra moves which weren't in the original.

If I remember well, equipment wasn't in it either, so that's a nice bonus too.

Overall, it's actually playable now, and it's a good game too.

Grand Knights History is similar – it looks nice, but isn't all that great.

A good portion of the game being behind some dumb online mode doesn't help it.

I also have Dragon's Crown which I'll probably play when I'm done with OS.

Gwendolyn is a cute girl, but book loli is the cutest.

That's why the ones humoring the idea bring it up as a sort of joint effort by small and mid-tier devs. But yeah, it's a fantasy nonetheless. I'm just wondering how much shit both devs and consumers are willing to take from platform holders be it Sony, Nintendo or Steam because they all have their share of shit it's just that Sony's been escalating theirs to absurdly draconic degrees.

The other issue I have with this is that, while not as bad as other jap companies, SEGA is slowly starting to "alter" their games. The most recent one being the remaster of Yakuza 3 (the most worrying change being the removal of the tranny escape substories where you had to run away from a muscular tranny), with their reason for doing it was to be more acceptable for today's morals (as the morals in 2009 were different than they are now), showing that they are willing to censor themselves instead of being forced to (that or they are being forced to for the (((olympics))) ). Call me paranoid, but this is already looking like a slippery slope to more censorship down the road for sega.

That being said, they may listen to fans warning them not to go down this road, but if they're like any other company, they'll listen to SJWs and other (((pawns))) disguised as the voice of the people, they should be shunned like all the rest (which would suck for Vanillaware being a small dev company, but companies need to know that we won't stand for this censorship shit).

Yeah, gotta admit that Yakuza 3 thing was eyebrow-raising. I'm also convinced something happened during the making of Kiwami 2 but I still haven't gathered the evidence and it's something similar - early trailers showed a ally Heat action that made the enemy get kissed by the okama bar owner but now it only triggers a generic weapon Heat attack animation. Either that got cut mid-development or was cut for the Western version but I haven't found footage of the JP version so I can't say for certain. Seems embarrassing situations with cross dressers are off the table now though it raises the question of who they don't want to offend.

As for receptiveness, they (Atlus and VW as well) are probably the most woke on the SJW problem - they now it's a paper tiger that if pandered to will only hurt them in the end.

Time to continue my autism stream. Since there's not much talk about Muramasa, I'll give my thoughts on it.

Honestly, it might be my favorite out of the Vanillaware games, one of the reasons being pic-related (quote from the legendary trio of OG Persona developers).

The game has such an undeniable soul to it that I cant help but really love it. The people who worked on this game really took their time to delve into history and mythology but also conveys it in such a powerful and compelling way, not a dry or detached one like you might typically see in an RTS. The dialogue and characters are irresistibly compelling and fascinating. I feel like I genuinely learned some things about Japanese culture, concepts and values (or at least their older ones) from this game and gained insights I didn't normally have before, like for example the viewing of buddhism and deities by many in history in Japan. Of course, this is a strange sort of tangent and thing to be talking about, and it sounds strange when I say it like this, but anyone who plays it will probably know what I am talking about. It is such a cultured game. The characters are so complex that you don't know how to feel about them (but you'll probably end up liking or at least being intrigued by most of them). Momohime and Jinkuro's relationship is so strange but kinda hilarious at times to see.

The gameplay is of course, fucking great. The dash system, the blade switching and special mechanics, the feel of different blades and the overall speed and pacing of combat along with the satisfaction of aerial combat combined with the ability to literally dash circles and run through enemy like they're butter in an unending combo is immensely satisfying. It gave a different vibe in Odin Sphere, but I preferred it in Muramasa where it feels like you had so much more control, and it felt so… "restrained" by comparison, but it felt like it was more "action-dense" by doing so if that makes sense. Its hard to explain. I also liked the food system, though for me I rarely ever used any items besides food or tablets. I played on the hardest default difficulty which was decently challenging I guess, but overall I rarely died or lost, and almost never did in the Kisuke arc, though if that was because of difficulty or because I had just improved that much over the Momohime arc, I don't know. I'd like to attribute it to the latter. i didn't try it on the extra-difficult setting you unlock from beating the game, though I'm curious to see how that would go.

One of the ways I wish this game and really more games in general handled the sort of "harder difficulties being unlocked" is more of the story's content being unlocked. Sure the true ending and other endings are good and all, but if the journey isn't different or more isn't realized throughout it, it feels almost pointless to go through it outside of seeing if the gameplay is more fun with the increased difficulty. I wish it were done like Fire Emblem 7's difficulty settings where you can get significantly new insight on the story, different maps or at least different enemies, locations, and necessary strategies, different characters and overall new additional and possibly some secret content and insight along with a logical and satisfying conclusion. Though I don't know how much the story changes outside of the true ending in the new difficulty modes if at all, this is just an assumption based on what I've seen about it; I hope that actually is the case for this game.

The artstyle is so fucking good as usual for Vanillaware games, but for this game in particular its so styled and perfect for what it aims to do. These Japanese monsters from mythology are brought out so viscerally that you can't help but marvel at it.

On a side note, why are jewtubers so fucking bad at games? I wanted to try and find a nice little gameplay webm or gif to post with this but these fags are so incompetent and boring that it makes it fucking impossible.

Builds only really matter on Infernal difficulty which really lives up to its name. Dwarf is pretty fun for solo play especially if go for a grab build and make the most of the giant rocks laying around, one of my favorite things is toss it in a straight line in mid-air then jump again to catch it as it ricochets off a wall and throw it again. Also important to note that he can only grab bigger enemies if they're petrified (maybe stunned too but I'm not sure of this last one).

spin2win ZON is also a lot of fun and if you're good at parrying, you can make a interesting build centered around that.

Lastly, a shank Elf can be pretty fun too if you max item durability and capacity since you really need to learn how to manage inventory with her.

The magic users I think are more fun in co-op but some might argue that Wizard is the strongest character mostly thanks to spell combos like slow+fire fountain. Had a friend who played him and we both did about 500 floors of the tower in Infernal difficulty, the dps he could dish was absurd.

Being a game that had to be fan-translated, and not a high profile one, tends to do that. Despite being in English afterward, and obviously imageboards being prone to emulation and piracy, most fan-translated games remain underplayed, especially in the broader web that is more prone to consider emulation a grey area. There's also the aforementioned issue of a good bit of the game being locked to a now dead online, which probably doesn't help generate interest.

There's very few things to do in Grand Knights History, without the multiplayer component. The first area serves as a tutorial and comes with a story, but it's brief: all the remains afterward is to grind a few identical missions to train troops that you were supposed to bring online. But it's basically an afterthought to do something during server maintenance, not really a campaign or even a list of side missions.

>I dare you to go through Cornelius' chapter without having fun

Funny, that's where I'm at right now and is also the chapter at which I quit the first time when I played it years ago.

To be fair, I think I got burned out that time, so I've been taking it really easy now.

Also, while the game is good, I wonder if I should turn the difficulty up to expert.

The Gwendolyn chapter was mostly a breeze although some fights gave me a hard time when I tried to S-rank them.

I fear it might just turn into an unfun, hair-pulling grind.

Very few games have good difficulty settings. It either gets too easy or ridiculously frustrating.

Finally, since all other major characters were introduced in Gwendolyn's portion of the story, I really have to wonder why Cornelius was left out.

>>15748130

I played it for a bit.

The art, music and combat are pretty good, but I think that the lack of dedicated story characters as units hurts it.

It's also a fantastic example along with games like Demon's Souls on why you should never have single and multiplayer components of a game intertwined.

But at least playing DeS without the online isn't completely pointless.

IIRC just turning it up to hard will change things significantly. Dunno why but Vanillaware goes ape shit with higher difficulties, DC's Infernal per instances, is bonkers - I only cleared that campaign once on co-op, they did some really interesting shit and gave almost every enemy new moves while using pre-existing assets and in the end result was bosses turning a 180º and the ones who used to be pushovers are now the hardest (Medusa, Golem and the Doom Beetle come to mind).

>DeS without the online isn't completely pointless

I got the game very late so I mostly played it without ever running into anyone (most of the activity was during the last month, unsurprisingly) and it was still pretty fun. Has a lot of limitations but it's daring in its "FUN ALLOWED" approach and the presentation is still top notch that it aged well.

It happens, no worries.

To make for a bit of discussion, VW is always all about the visuals but what about the sounds? What do you think of their OSTs? Personally I find most to be on the forgettable side, particularly Dragon's Crown; Odin Sphere has a few memorable tracks and, IMHO their best work is in Oboro Muramasa, even if I haven't played the game, I love that OST.

It's a shame because of the 3-3 boss but, overall, the feeling of missing out depends on how much mileage you'd get out of a completely broken PvP system.

>But do they have lolis?

I think a good chunk of the Grim Grimoire cast fits that bill. Most are NPCs like Alice in OS and IIRC OM has a loli boss. Playable ones, there's Mercedes maybe, she's a gorillion years old, and Rajyaki in the last Muramasa DLC that's defaulted to a loli form but can turn adult and giga fbb demon form.

So I've been playing Muramasa: The Demon Blade on Dolphin for the first time and honestly it's really good. It reminds me of DmC(the original) , but with 2D graphics (so like Viewtiful Joe) and RPG mechanics. The art direction is fantastic, the music is phenomenal. My only real gripe are the monks in the game, especially when you take on more than 3 or 4. I tried the first bonus challenge you come across as Momohime and even at level 43, I still can't beat it because fucking monks just pile on me and give me a bukkake of pain, whereas doing the first bonus challenge with Kisuke and the 100 ninjas was moderately difficult, but I was able to do it in 1 try at level 10 or 11. Otherwise, I love this game. Are the other Vanillaware games like this or is Dragon's Crown and Odin Sphere more like a traditional beat em' up like the Capcom D&D games? I know GrimGrimoire is an RTS and I'll get to playing that after I configure PCSX2 properly and finish Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen. I just want input from people that played either of those games at all.

I never got why people hated the fact that Kamitani likes drawing busty/thick-thighed women, especially when they are objectively drawn well. I mean, if they were drawn terribly, I would get it since it's shitty art. But literally this isn't even close to being bad at all. They are highly detailed and while they aren't realistic in proportions (really in respect to their limbs and the same criticism goes for the male characters too almost double in a lot of cases. I've seen huge hulking knights with HUGE ARMS and average sized legs. What's up with that?) , complements the artistic backdrop of the setting and very competent knowledge in the color wheel just due the way they're stylized. Plus, the level of detail on the body features is pretty amazing. I can honestly forgive the lack of realism because it goes for an actual unique style that I don't think anyone has tried out before and it complements the fairytale-like nature of the games, which is better than the faux-realism schtick that the modern industry has sunk too, where all artists try to have similar styles and don't stand out from one another or the tumblr crown, which we all know about.

funnily enough I think his Dragon's Crown characters were the least stylized compared to the others, or maybe that's just their very nice and distributed proportions and not-awkward heights and lengths compared to his other games' artoworks talking.

"Fairytale-like" nature really fits Odin Sphere's art direction perfectly, the stylization of the average size and feeling of those characters, it was quite… strange, like I was looking at SMT monsters or something. It took a little bit of time getting used to it, and I didn't like it at first but over time I eventually grew fond of it. That's a good word for describing it.

Muramasa gives me a strong vibe of studio ghibli mixed with even older influences. Its funny how he built such a Japanese work and avoided contemporary anime styles. I think 13 Sentinels would probably have ended up being closest to the contemporary "anime" style that we'll end up seeing from him, and even then its fantastic and still so fitting.

Friend of mine's similar, and used to be put off by the stylized proportions (as opposed to the tits and ass factor the media despised). But having showed him Muramasa and Odin Sphere, I think he's grown more accustomed to Kamitani's style, to the point lately he's actually expressed interest in playing Dragon's Crown sometime. But his PS3 needs work (namely replacing the HDD and fixing the laser), has no interest in a Vita himself, and never likes to leave his place if he can help it (and thus trying to get him to come over to mine is a no go), so I don't think there's much chance of us co-oping in the future.

Speaking of Dragon's Crown though, I've been curious as to if the PS4 version has free online, or if not having to pay extra is still a perk to the PS3/Vita original. Also if the online on any of the versions is remotely active these days.

I'm probably gonna jump in this week but I'll try some offline runs first because it's been years since I last played and I don't want to look like a stupid asshole. I don't even remember the runes and I knew that shit by heart. Gonna lower the difficulty too, Infernal really lives up to its name and the new level cap is absurd, IIRC they upped it from 99 to 255 and my ZON was nowhere near that even after running 500+ tower floors.

Eh. Now that its been canceled for the Vita its irrelevant for me, and I'm definitely very much worried about Sony's cancer hitting him and his works very hard.

Sony doesn't seem to be afraid of anyone in their fucking crusade. Idea Factory and Marvelous were hit, I'd be surprised if Atlus didn't follow suit unless Sega throws their weight around (and even then its questionable)

They might already have. About a couple of weeks ago Studio Zero came out to say something about Catherine FB, they promised there'll be no light shows which kinda seemed like a implicit admission that the game's getting censored in other ways. It's important to note the soy mafia won't let a dev say they've been censored.

Meanwhile, last night at the absolute shitfest that was the VGAs, the P5 main character was confirmed as DLC for the new Smash Bros and the first thing that came to my mind was that Atlus is jumping ship.

Now that Sony's future offerings are looking both short and compromised, I've been giving this PSTV thing some thought and I might bite the bullet once I have the shekels but I still don't really get how it works, what do I need aside the PSTV itself, the game and apparently a PS3 (which I got)?

You don't need a PS3.

You do need a controller though, which you should already have with your PS3.

You do need a vita memory card afaik, though you should hack it so you aren't forced to use their super overpriced shit and be fine afterwards. It has 1GB of internal memory so you don't need to buy one with it if you plan on hacking it straight from the start, which I would strongly recommend.

That's really about all you need, besides of course the cables.

At the same time though, the Wii version's a lot more readily accessible, at least for those of which there's not enough beyond Muramasa to warrant a Vita purchase. And, assuming all the base game scripting to be the same, would probably be much less time and energy consuming to rip the better script and overwrite the worse one, compared with having to translate from scratch for other games, and leaving it more a coding issue than anything. But maybe the role of actually worthwhile DLC exclusive to the Vita version also reduces demand, as even if both shared the same improved script, the Vita version is still the definitive.

>I wonder the same thing about the Persona 1 PSP remake's script to the original PSX version.

Honestly seemed to me like a much more viable means to make a definitive English version than trying to patch the soundtrack when the track amount isn't 1:1 between both. But again, that assumes the amount of script lines the same between the JP PS1 and NA PSP versions, and unfortunately with the blacking and such in the NA PS1 version, it probably wouldn't be as easy to hack in without an existing, properly spaced English typeface (a VWF preferred, but I don't know off the top of my head how P1 handled here).

>>15844017

The Vita can be hacked and is pirate friendly. And even in the states, with my own being surprisingly JP/niche friendly in aftermarket, I don't see Muramasa Rebirth around much, which I attribute more to people that like it keeping their copies for replaying, rather than having sold badly (for a Vita game).

Anyhow, as shit as Gamestop is, credit where it's due, their website is workable for trying to find anywhere remotely nearby with a copy of particular games. Maybe one of your PAL chains has similar functionality? Assuming you haven't already tried, I mean. And of course, buying online through Amazon.uk or whatever or whatever might be a possibility, if prices aren't complete shit. Out here it's not too pricy, but again, that's burgerland. But either seems a better option than just trawling at random and hoping you find it, if you actually want a copy of the game.

Ultimate difficulty adds so much content it's almost detrimental, the new level cap will take eons to reach (I've done 500+ floors of the Tower and my ZON is still around Lv200), they gave all the enemies new attacks by cleverly re-using existent assets and it completely reshuffles bosses in terms of difficulty, pushovers like Medusa become harder than the freakin' Red Dragon and IIRC Killer Rabbit earns its rightful place as the hardest boss and lastly you can earn weapons with interesting effects like Dwarf hammers that cast Gravity when you use a PS and Elf gets a Beastmaster set that gives her bonuses and unique abilities when mounted (plus you can buy beast summon scrolls from Lucain). Not sure of this but if I'm not mistaken, one patch added the ability to throw your weapon forward as a alternative to PS, not really useful but it's kinda fun.

That's hoping for a lot. Seems they don't care about losing profits just as long as they send the message that people (both devs and consumers) will have to bend to knee. A lot of people here think this will only hurt Sony and I wish that were true but this kinda thing runs the risk of setting a terrible precedent, redefine the relationship between the platform and developers. What I think will happen is that devs will start to self-censor at the root because they won't want to put up with this crap nor treat a part of their audience like second class customers even if said customers are having a inferior product because of the platform holder. The Senran Kagura producer already came forward saying he's taking SK7 back to the drawing board because they have to rethink a lot of things.

Last time I played it was 4 years ago so it was a confusing reunion, getting used to all the buttons, knowing where everything is, had to check my builds to see what the hell I made with my characters, almost had a unga moment when I couldn't figure how to use the spells that aren't in the quick menu (it's pressing down on the d-pad after highlight it with the left or right keys) etc.

>Are you playing online and is it still active and fun?

Still don't feel ready for online, did a Hard (lowered from Ultimate just in case) run of a stage with ZON and steam rolled everything so I guess the lowered difficulty was too much. That said, if that Medusa hit as hard as in Ultimate, I'd be seeing a game over screen, my dodges aren't on point. Also, I completely forgot the runes.

I'll be doing a few stages offline for the sake of getting reacquainted with cooking and then hop in to see if I can run into anyone.

>I'm assuming you've already 100%'d it then?

I don't think it's possible to 100% the game. Ultimate mode's description literally goes "you're here forever", takes eons to level up, you're always getting more gear and I've no clue if there's an end to the tower.

Anywho, finally had the guts to jump in. Tried connecting at first, got nothing and so went him solo. However, on the very first part of the area I chose, someone jumped and by the end of the level, we were a full party. Later tried connecting again and joined a game that also had a full party for a bit. So yeah, DC's online is still active, surprisingly so for a niche title. That said, still pretty rusty and don't remember much of the game so I'm playing second potato atm.

Before jumping in, I ran a bit of the tower solo in Infernal difficulty, I forgot how much harder it is compared to the main game. And I've certainly lost the ability to keep track of what's happening on the screen, even with a minimal HUD.

Understandable, but a PSTV is cheap at any rate and has some pretty nice stuff you can do with it even outside of its exclusives.

>a lot of people here think this will only hurt Sony and I wish that were true but this kinda thing runs the risk of setting a terrible precedent, redefine the relationship between the platform and developers

What do you mean exactly?

Also I think this will undoubtedly hurt developers more than it will Sony, unfortunately. It will hurt Sony in the long-run, but that takes time to effect them and in the meantime developers could literally be dying off or shaving off core people.

Its kind of strange to see Sony throw literally everything away. I remember when the Sony president said that DOAX3 wouldn't come to the west because of Dragon's Crown not being well-received by journalists, clearly indicating that he at least cared about Atlus and Koei Tecmo as developers for the platform, but even that seems to be gone.

Online seems pretty active still, not glory days active but it doesn't take long to find a game. That said, can't find anyone doing the labyrinth which is kinda disappointing, the main game gets tedious after a while, doubly so when you're in post-game and there's no point to it. Kinda sucks because I even respec'd my FAITA to be more of a team player with his unique items and maximized the shit out of that shield.

Incidentally, got a couple of questions:

1 - does Fighter's distraction skill give the +30% AT even if running solo?

2 - does Nutritionist affect food drops? In this respec, I raised that skill to Lv4, something I never done before, and the food drops are absurdly consistent.

Kind of an odd question but are there cheaters in this game like players with hacked gear? Had the good fortune of finding companions for a bit of the Labyrinth and one Sorceress was casting Blizzard practically every encounter without the usage number ever dropping. I know Sorceress and Wizard can get gear that has a 50% chance of casting a spell without spending it but this was way too consistent to be the cause.

Just something I found odd though I won't complain since I got easily carried through a chunk of floors, even when I was left with the NPC.

Googled around for Elf build discussions and found this YT channel devoted exclusively to DC and, lol and behold, this guy has done over TWENTY TWO FUCKIN' THOUSAND tower floors (and is still going) and now I feel like those Lovecraft characters that get their brains toasted when faced with certain revelations because I thought I was some hot shit for having done 500 floors with my Amazon.

Can someone explain Odin Sphere to me? There's something I'm not getting. Eating food increases your maximum HP. So surely the meta is to be planting as much as I can and scoffing down food at every opportunity? But doing that feels like a waste in a way I can't describe. Uses too many of the phozon things, perhaps? Is there something I'm missing here?

Food is also XP, and no not necessarily. It helps to save some ingredients for high tier recipes, in fact that's what you should generally be doing. Maury should be one of your main sources of XP especially later on.

Don't plant as much as you can. Plant good seeds that work well in recipes, usually the higher the tier, the better the options.

Phozons…how you manage them is up to you. Just remember levels are important and also keep in mind what you would want in terms of skills and abilities and get them accordingly when you have a good amount

>>15930249

Dots? You mean Phozons? Anyways, its up to you but you should be doing both. Don't grow too many seeds since you will be getting some good stuff without needing to grow. The farther you get the better the things you can grow and those are the ones worth saving for in my opinion

I mostly use planted food (mapples in particular) to level up alchemy concotions and make the most of those phozon plants to not spend much. For boosting HP, there's the already mentioned Maury (though he'll require ingredients so you gotta keep a surplus of everything) and the Pooka village eateries that ask for Valentine coins which are exclusive for those places.

I usually get high tier gear (I think it's Lv4 or Lv5) and might occasionally cough up the shekels for something for the sake of alchemy, usually Coolers so I can turn Volcanoes into Whirlwinds.

Anyway, my DC adventures are still going, went back to Infernal to finish the Labyrinth with my Elf who's in constant need of better gear and more experience (both numbers and my actual experience playing her) and, from what I just gathered, the Seals require clearing the Labyrinth with a character to get the most of it (a 25% buff to everything).

I am playing Elf and he is playing Sorceress. I assume party composition and skills don't matter much on the normal difficulty?

How do some of the Elf's abilities work? Like the one where you hold square for magic, sometimes it does a whirlwind but others it tosses fireballs. What decides that? Some of her skills also seem to focus around producing daggers and using them, but I don't want to care about daggers at all, I just mainly want to shoot my bow and kick things. Is that viable?

>Elf magic

Elemental Lore depends on a magic source that's in the vicinity, default is wind but changes if you're near fire, ice or water signaled by the colored orb circling her. Per instances, carrying a torch or equipping the fire arrows will basically set her magic to fire. Ice is the toughest one to get and depends on a very rare piece of equipment (and some skill to go with it) or, the more common, enemies casting ice magic.

There's two ways to abuse magic:

1 - hold Square and tap up to keep doing (this also works for Amazon's parry)

2 - hold Square+L1 then dodge, she'll cast the magic, and keep dodging with the buttons held

>nigger daggers

That was my build, basically Daggers+Backstab+Maintenance. It's good if you have other people around and you can capitalize on the openings but for high difficulty solo runs, it's extremely frustrating.

>bow+kicks

Kicks are the weakest of her options but that's not a issue for Normal or even Hard difficulties and you can get reallocation potions later on so don't worry about builds right now. That said, a complent to the bow is mandatory as is having two bows in each bag. They break quick and each shot has to count, also remember to hit enemies with anything else besides arrows so they drop arrows.

I strongly reccommend you take a peek at the channel I linked in >>15914507 Basically a "MLG Elf" and the short technique videos are very helpful.

It's a shame that Vanillaware's IPs are divided between a bunch of different publishers; I'd kill for a big hardcover artbook compilation that gathers all their work.

Actually thinking about it, they're pretty damn underrepresented on the artbook front, which is strange considering the visuals are the big draw of their games. Odin Sphere/Leifthrasir, Grand Knight History and Dragon's Crown got abridged artbooks packed in with their CEs, but Dragon's Crown is the only one that's gotten a separate, in-depth retail one (which oddly hasn't been picked up by Udon for a Western release; it's still Japan-only almost 4 years later).

It is a bit annoying that of the modern Vanillaware releases, Muramasa was the one that couldn't even get an artbook here. Then again, it was initially handled by Ignition here, and then Aksys, so I guess one shouldn't expect much in the way of extra effort from either of them, whereas Atlus not only did full color softcover prints for Odin Sphere and Dragon's Crown as a freebie, but also bothered to translate the text too (which I think oddly wasn't the case for the ingame artbook unlock in Leifthrasir if I recall right).

>4 DLCs, at $15 each

Pretty sure there were $5 each, with a bundle of all four of them for $15.

>individual DLC never put on sale, only the digital complete edition

They used to have that DLC bundle get into flash sales for $7.50, but I suppose Aksys wants better shekel control at this point in time, either forcing people that buy preowned to still fork over the full price, or pay around the same for the digital complete on flash sales.

Some of the OST discs they include for stuff beg to differ, but I suppose it's still free shit and more effort than most. At least their Legacy of Ys one has 30 tracks. 8-12 song sampler packs can go fuck themselves though.

>Were those softcovers available for the Vita versions as well, or PS3/4 only?

Softcover artbooks for all first print versions minimum, I think.

db71e7  No.15953246

>>15953233

>more effort than most

That's mainly what I was referring to. The fact that I can get shit like artbooks, pillowcases, physical (sometimes even thick) manuals when nobody else includes it with their default editions is pretty nice and for no real cost increase over other games, sometimes even cheaper since their prices drop quickly. Their shit usually gets beat out in terms of goods and quality by limited editions of games of course, but those cost far more and a lot of the limited edition shit is only a slight to moderate upgrade of what used to be the norm years ago. Its annoying.

OST discs are one of the lamer things to include, but yeah its still better than nothing and it makes the game come with a bigger (usually nicer) box which is nice.

>Softcover artbooks for all first print versions minimum, I think.

The OSL artbook is pretty easily findable on eBay for about ~$20 or so. I wouldn't pay any more than that, it's only 64 pages and not all that expansive. Same with the DC one, but you're better off just importing the proper one from Japan. Far more content and not really all that expensive, it only goes for about $30-40 depending on your exchange rate. Only gripe is that it's horizontal, so it might stick out on your shelf a bit.

I'd think it would be cheaper, since I've been seeing Dragon's Crown's first print artbook for $3 or so around where I live from time to time. But then again, I see lots of copies of Dragon's Crown in general, and I really don't see Leifthrasir in comparison, assuming I'm not at a Gamestop, so if there were low copies shipped probably also means low copies of the artbook too.

>Paid demo

>Comes in a physical version

>"Prologue"

What is this, Gran Turismo?

I'm not too keen on that. Considering Leifthrasir had a perfectly good free demo, this is probably a "gift" from Atlus' sheer arrogance.

Also, having its own disc release? If it's just a 3hr~ demo of a game, that's one hell of a waste. Other options offer a download code, which for a demo that lets you transfer save data it'd make more sense. If the prologue chapter was entirely separate from the main game, then that would merit a disc version's collectable factor at least… But as of right now, the best move would be to wait for the final game.

Wonder what Atlus USA will end up doing. The physical Prologue disc is 99% not coming overseas most likely. Same goes for 'New Price' versions of physical releases.

That Odin Sphere theme looks nice. Hopefully it comes to the american store…

Wait a second… Save data does not transfer to the main game. I read that is was going to be transferable at first.

This is actually going to be a separate product/story from the final game, then? Seems sketchy as fuck, how far does the development hell hole go?

I remember hearing that Dragon's Crown Pro sold like shit, this is probably to cover development costs assuming Dragon's Crown Pro didn't net them much

This is unfortunate, but at least Georgie boy has a good track record with games that spent a long-time in development

Probably because it was overpriced on top of not adding anything substantial. Also for a system with paid online.

If they want easy money just freakin' port Muramasa Rebirth.

So they're pulling a Ground Zeroes for the first three hours of the base game that doesn't even transfer over come release.

Holy shit Atlus, what the fuck?

New screens. I don't like how hesitant they are to show what the actual game looks like, feels like they want to sell people on the visuals first.

The game bundles containing Odin Sphere and Dragon' Crown Pro are really good value for people who've not played either. Though the inclusion of 'mini-soundtrack' really annoys me; wish they'd just include the FULL soundtrack instead, and I don't mind if they have to increase the price to compensate. But man, a paid-for demo? When's the actual game coming out? Is it reasonable to expect a 2019 release at this point?

My guess is early 2020

Worst case has gotta be 2021
