I used to like it but gameplay in combat&explore games has since evolved while Zelda has remained casual because that is what it is, a casual game for kids, like Pokemon or Mario, we were kids and loved it, but eventually it just becomes too easy and boring.

For some reason I really love the sort-of spin-off games where link goes on a random adventure totally unrelated to Hyrule. Specifically Majora's Mask and Link's Awakening. Just behind those is the Gamecube version of Wind Waker which I think really captured an epic feel for the main series conflict with it's post apocalyptic setting.

Zelda to me is the basic level of what a game should be. When I think of a textbook definition video game I think of Zelda 1. I also really like the mix of gameplay styles from combat to puzzle solving to exploration, it's a nice mix that just feels great so long as it's not being turned to shit by excessive tutorials and waggle non-sense (Fuck Skyward Sword, last one I played, first one I didn't beat.).

What scares me is it was a series of games back on the N64 that were easy for kids, but now the designers feel even those games are too hard based on the 3DS remakes. It's like they're making their games not even for children anymore but for special needs children. Is society getting more retarded or are Nintendo? Both.

When I saw the first game in action, it blew my damn mind, and that first impression has had a lasting hold on my opinion of the series. It's an adventure game with great music, a consistent story for the most part, and Nintendo usually brings their A-game to the table when it comes to the series.

They were objectively awful gimmicks that gave you less freedom of movement than traditional controls. It was purely a shoehorned in gimmick to (poorly) show off the touch screen like so many other, mostly early, DS games. What's the point in forcing the player to use the stylus for movement, when d-pad movement is less restrictive and had been the gold standard for decades?

Think it really comes down to the next game. If they nix weapon durability, add in more enemies, get rid of the magic ipad and bring back items, and most importantly have dungeons… then it could be amazing. BotW was a hell of an experimental title for the series and i hope they learn from it.

The original Zelda is the first game I ever received for Christmas and owned myself. The year I got Zelda for Christmas my brother was getting a Mega Drive, so I inherited the NES as a hand-me-down, keep the younger kid happy thing, along with his copy of Zelda 2, which I already loved, so I begged my parents for the first game.
I was also sickly as a kid and couldn't go outside and play as much as I liked, so I lived vicariously by exploring Hyrule. When I grew up I wanted to be strong and healthy enough to go on adventures like Link, and I wanted a Triforce on the back of my hand just like Link's in the Zelda 2 manual.

Melee fags get out.
Random thought, but re-playing BOTW it feels more like a proof-of-concept tech-demo than an actual Zelda game. The world and gameplay is nice the first time around, and I'm not one to complain about the world being too "empty" (I actually like it when game devsdon't feel the need to jampack tombs and crypts and shit every five steps so you get some sense of scale and wilderness), but it just feels to be missing the actual Zelda content. The quests and the dungeons and the item progression is all fucked up.
Keep the basics, get rid of breakable weapons, and add in more meaningful NPCs with fun and interesting quest lines and useful items that you acquire through dungeons and BOTW2: Breath of the Wilder could be GOTYAY.
3b7fb6 No.15720388
I think I prefer BOTW to most except OOT and MM, but I can't get over how easily botw could've been so much better.
Why did they not introduce any new races? It's ok that you got to hang out with the sheikah this time around but they're just Hyperjapan: The Race, which wasn't that exciting.
Also the awful enemy variety just kills the game. Everyone who makes open world games knows you got add different enemies into different zones, not fill it with bokoblins and moblins 100%. At least the lizalfos were themed in that they hung around water and ice.
I hate to say it but skyrim did the open world much better. You had the wandering herds of mammoths and their giants, the dragons flying about, different environments had different threats. You had the underdark for variety's sake, etc. Even the cities were better.
You can't even dive properly in breath of the wild, something you could do in oot. The zoras domain should've been a big atlantis style biodome under a lake or something.

Maple. Not only did she have a cute design, the concept is so great. Having a character you can run into repeatedly in different places (and not just as part of the story either) made it feel like you have more of a real relationship with her than many of the other characters.
They really should have added something like Maple into BOTW. It would've given you something to do in the emptier areas. That travelling musician who pops up at secret shrines all over the place felt kind of similar in that "oh yay, it's my friend I see in many places", but since his locations were entirely scripted he was much less of a fun surprise than spotting a carelessly flying witch.
>thoughts on the rumoured netflix series?
Not happening. The Pooducer didn't say he was making a Zelda series, he said he was talking with a Japanese publisher to produce a cartoon based on an iconic series. The irresponsible journalist who broke the story originally guessed it was Zelda and everyone else ran with it.
Nintendo is much too protective of their brand to allow Netflix to change everything, and Netflix is much too pozzed not to change everything.
As I said in another thread, it's way more likely Metroid that'll be butchered by Netflix because Nintendo simply doesn't care.

I don't. I think it's a great game to show off launch hardware and all that stuff. However as games they've been nothing but mediocre. Breath of the Wild is a good example of a launch title where it shows what the system can do and allows you to fuck around for a bit, but in the end it's just a shallow Skyrim clone with too much empty flatlands, shitty framerate and too much mountain climbing. Additionally I'd argue the aspects that made OoT such a big hit were expanded upon by both DMC and GTA, leaving OoT to just be a product of its time. Since Nintendo is making a Switch Pro, I'd like them to bump the framerate from 30 to 60. Although knowing Japanese developers the physics are probably tied to the framerate, and the experimentation is probably the most interesting thing to come out of that game. In any case Zelda needs a new director, Aonuma is a hack.

I've always had a thing for high fantasy. The different kinds of worlds they've built always piqued my interest. And all things considered, I did like the idea of a timeline But I don't feel they've been handling it too well after Twilight Princess. Actually the story part has been degrading over time since then.
And while I'm complaining, they need to learn it's okay to have different villains take over occasionally. Ganondorf has been run into the ground and needs a real break for a few titles.

Sure, I often play zelda and shiek in Smash anyway. I hope Ganondork is actually playable and not slow as shit.
>any personal reasons on why you like this series so much?
The adventuring themes, mostly. Questing and exploring the land + puzzle solving and dungeons.
They're games I grew up with and those ones are still my favourite. Although Zelda gets more casual and gimmicky with each entry, it's a series I always return to, unfortunately.

Using the same engine as BotW, but inverse the theme. Have scarce resources but abundant artisan labor. The quality of goods are better. Weapons dull, not break, and can be repaired, but aren't as many. Weapons can also be bartered on three black market. You also have limited inventory space so you carry bottles for medicine and elixirs instead of food. Meals can only be eaten at pubs and campfires but give potent effects like extra refillable hearts instead of temp hearts for 1 full game day. Remove armor rating and just have costumes for skills (plate male gives bonus defense but expends more stamina to run and climb) and accessories for permanent upgrades (power bracelet, blue ring, Zora scale, etc.).
Also if we have one new gameplay concept to replace the Shiekah slate then can we have rope? You can literally use rope for anything rope can be used for. You can tether onto the rope and swing or pull. You can throw the rope in a lasso to tie enemies and animals. You can tether what you lasso'd onto anything: your horse, a wagon, an arrow shot into a rolling log, yourself with iron boots on, etc. One idea I had with a rope is you can tether yourself to your horse, jump off and "kite" with your paraglider dropping Deku nuts and bombs behind you. When you're done you pull yourself to the horse and regain control or you can cut the rope and sail free. Boring but practical uses of rope would be to shoot an arrow between two wooden posts and zip line between them. Or throw it on a pillar and climb the wall if too slippery to climb. And maybe set up the rope as a trip wire in a dark cavern to pull a flintbox and ignite a bomb trap.
Apologies to gush about rope. I don't think CDi ruined the idea of rope in a Zelda game. And let's get NoE to do voice acting this time. Treehouse fucking sucks.

I've mained Sheik since Melee, don't plan to change.

At this point, nostalgia and familiarity I guess. I haven't played any games since Squidward Sword and the only one I really care to play is A Link Between Worlds.

Favorite game has to be Minish Cap. It's not the best design wise, but there's just something really wholesome about it, and I still feel it when I play it today.

I remember the Ikaana Canyon Skeleton Warriors and how much fun they were, I remember going back and fighting them multiple times, which was another great thing about MM; the replay value can be entirely spent on one playthrough, and the fact that everything resets allows you to do whatever you want to over and over until you're sick.

It felt like the first zelda-wandering around exploring and seeing how stuff worked. The dungeons were pretty anemic compared to the later zelda games, but you had lots of little popcorn like bites of minidungeons instead. Not necessarily better, but that coupled with the little forest spirits and whatnot mad me want to explore, because I knew that I'd find something beyond that X in the distance.

I definitely agree. Minish Cap was comfy as hell. I still daydream about being an inchling from time to time.
The soundtrack also is extremely nice.

Not too fond of the direction the later games have been taking. I preferred TLoZ when it was classic top down dungeon crawling.

Surprising amount of love for Minish Cap in this thread. BotW was suppose to have tiny people in the game but that got cut. I guess Link is too old to see Picori.

Majora's Mask is my #1 fav. Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild are my other top favourites too. The 2D ones are ok, but the 3D ones are where it's at.
>favourite characters?
If you can judge how much you like someone by how much you'd hate to see them leave you, then Zelda (from Skyward Sword) and Midna would be tied for my most favourite character. Knowing how much they both obviously loved Link, the scenes where they get (spoiler alert) sealed away and separated from him (SS Zelda temporarily at the temple, Midna in the mirror forever) really got to me the most.
>thoughts on the rumoured netflix series?
I hope it's just a rumour. Netflix is very sloppy at inserting multicultural casts into everything. Whether fans enjoy it or not. But if it does turn out to be true, I can only wish it's half as endearing as the vid I posted.
>will you main a zelda character in Ultimate? will link still be bottom tier?
Probably not. I'll give the newcomers like Inkling girl a shot before any veterans. Hopefully however, Link is actually good this time around. I'm tired of the lame excuse that the skinny elf is too "heavy and slow" because of "all the gear he carries". Bullshit. In BotW, the newest Link is light enough to float on fire smoke while carrying hundreds of weapons and armor.
>any personal reasons on why you like this series so much?
Personally, the 3D Zelda games just hold a very special place in my heart. Exploring Hyrule in 3D just feels very natural and nostalgic to me because Majora and Ocarina were some of the first 3D adventures I ever had. So being able to grow up with the series firsthand and watch the 3D Zeldas progress and advance throughout the decades has been a real pleasure.

Touch screen controls are wii-tier bad for anything outside of a turn based game. They should be shot on sight.
