That's the thing with horror. If you're going by nothing but the scare factor, cheap tactics always work best, but it comes with resentment. This is why everybody hates screamers and loud jump scares. Quality horror balances its time between scares, a foreboding atmosphere, and an environment that you actually enjoy exploring. The downtime is just as important as the scare.

Slender has no downtime and isn't designed to be enjoyable. It's a race to the finish with constant escalation. It's designed to trigger adrenaline and to keep yourself from any sort of downtime. It's a screamer in game form.

Honestly Slender Man will never be scary to me again due to how over saturated he quickly became, the only thing that makes this game effective imo is it's soundtrack, the dynamic buildup actually gets you a little more lifted than usual especially by page 7.

The guy who made the soundtrack should do some more honestly, it'd be more effective than using it on a urban myth.

i agree for the most part in that i rarely ever use filters, but id also say that self-moderation is infinitely superior to heavy handed external moderation. there will never be a consensus on imageboards and as such, there will never be moderation that will please everyone. this leads to meta drama/autism that has the power to tear apart even the tightest of communities

Slender Man works best as a ticking clock that slowly gets closer over the course of the series.

c3e077  No.15734609

>>15709679

So, the reason Slenderman is scary is because he's some guy standing in the woods who shouldn't be there. You don't know what his motives are or what he's going to do to you, and the game even fades out to static before you can see what happens. It's the mystery that a lot of horror doesn't really have. Sure, it could be made that way because it's super cheep, but that doesn't mean it's not effective.

Let's consider the Blair Witch Project. That was a movie made by dumping actors in the woods and fucking with them in various ways. The most effective scare (though one that didn't get on camera) was a guy in a bright onesie standing off in the distance just staring at them. While people are paranoid, seeing that they are not alone is a terrifying thing. It validates the creeping dread that builds up within them. You're not just scared becuase you're psyched out. you're scared because something is there with you.

I had the exact same feeling with Subnautica, although I've always been a huge wuss when it comes to horror movies and animation. I have a very specific trigger, in that any time I get the vibe of "I should not be here" or "the environment itself is hostile" I start getting short of breath (if you've seen Pacific Rim 1, the scene at the end where the mech briefly teleports into the underwater alien world is a similar idea). Subnautica, having

>primarily underwater gameplay

>lots of dark, creepy oceans

>no lights except flashlights (in the patch I torrented)

>aggressive sea creatures both large and small, including some that burrowed in the sand and other that would one-shot you in cramped caves

>giant, roaring sea monsters anywhere outside of the shallows

was a perfect storm, and one of the few games that has made me genuinely apprehensive to play it. Combine all of the above with the hell of a bad inventory management system, and it became a chore rather than a tiring pleasure.

Normally I'd agree, but when it comes to things like urban myths or creepypastas, that shit thrives on obscurity. You want there to be some scarcity to any information that can be found on it as that nails the ominous tone that was intended by the work. People who look at this sort of shit and say "hey this is great, let's make loads of fan material that shoves it in your face" miss the point about what made it cool in the first place.
