Is there any games you feel where the quality of the sequel and the previous game feel so different that they feel like they were made by an entirely different developer?

I just replayed Hitman:Codename 47 yesterday and now Ive started replaying through Hitman 2:Silent Assassin, and the difference in quality is staggering.

The first time I played Hitman 2 it was long after I played Codename 47 so I didn't notice it as much, but playing them immediately after each other back-to-back was really eye-opening.

Codename 47 is such an awful piece of shit, and then just 2 years later Silent Assassin comes out and its a massive improvement in every aspect, from graphics, to game mechanics, to mission/level design, everything is a thousand times better.

Like I said, It felt like it was a game made by an entirely different developer.

Have you ever had a similar experience?

Other than Traditions of the Trade and The Lee Hong Assassination, its just a complete mess, I dont know how you can defend it.

They very clearly had no idea what they were doing and didnt have a clear direction for the game, and the game quality suffered for it.

Its like they couldn't decide if they wanted it to be a cool espionage game or just a generic shooter, and somehow ended up with a strange abomination that combines both in the worst way possible.

The entire Columbia chapter was just complete ass.

First the absurdly huge jungle that you have traverse multiple times, first halfway across the map to reach the tribe camp, then walk to the other fucking side of the map to rescue the captured tribesman, then walk to the other fucking side of the map again back to the camp. All during this time there is absolutley nothing of interest in your path.

Then the bizzare and out-of-place jaguar feeding mission.

Finish it off with the massive, ugly, featureless compound with the thousand mile long fence you mentioned, into the mansion with the Tony Montana knock-off.

"More shit to do" doesn't mean better.

If you've done the challenges/achievement of GZ you would have noticed how insanely tight the whole thing is and how fucking deep they've gone.

Because a lot of challenges ask you to do shit in what look like impossible time, until you realize that yeah there is a way you just have to git gud. Like how you can fucking snipe people with pistol tranq darts from half the map away because the game does have a ballistic model in it.

And if you've gotten good in GZ and play MGS V after well… it's just a let down, because "there is more things in it" but it's piss easy

(here have a sniper tranq… Thanks but I know how to headshot guard at 300 yard with the basic pistol tranq).

Honestly, I like Codename 47's mechanics the most out of the Hitman games I've played. Haven't touched 2, though I intend on it. The biggest problem with Codename is that the level design and AI is bad.

I loved C47 as a 14 year old, but you're right - they didn't "get" how to do stealth properly yet. Disguises were overpowered - you would never get exposed unless you killed someone in plain sight.

Then comes SA and has the opposite flaw - you can't do shit without getting discovered. Contracts got it right.

Vinnie likes to watch TV in the entertainment room. If you mess up with the power box then Vinnie will send his personal bodyguard to see what's wrong with the TV, and you'll be with him alone.

You pay per body, so you get more money (=more weapons) by not killing everyone you see. Death to Spies is better in this regard, although you can't kill a lot in the more diplomatic missions and the physics/AI in the first game are a joke.

What specifically do you like? I cant recall off the top of my head anything that's exclusive to CN47.

>>15698559

I think SA's disguises are fine actually, they work from a distance or only for brief exposure at close range, but under close scrutiny you get exposed.

Meanwhile with later games you can mess around pretty freely as long as you dont do anything astronomically stupid.

SA's system makes more sense to me.

>Its like they couldn't decide if they wanted it to be a cool espionage game or just a generic shooter

It's because they didn't. Hitman: Codename 47 was originally going to be a tech demo for IO's Glacier engine in the mold of an action game. I don't know what brought up the stealth, I think it had something to do with the ragdoll physics\inverse kinematics. Hell, the game even has unused Duke Nukem-like taunts for combat.

That said though, I think that Codename 47 along with Contracts have the best soundtrack in the series.
