The name Mario is probably why he's considered to be Italian. I have to wonder how the character would have been interpreted over the years if he wasn't Italian. The actual games don't play this up, with the only real reference in the games being him saying "Mama Mia" a lot, and that only started in Mario 64. But still, all those cartoons sure played it up. And while they're largely forgotten now, they were big at the time. Of course this was well after the games were already very successful, but I think it had a bit of a cultural impact.
