Quite honestly, I always expected a generic enemy would be put into Smash as a "WTF" fighter at some point. Same here. I was almost disappointed to see his inclusion until a few seconds into the direct where they showed off his moves. I'd never been thrilled about previous Pokemon inclusions as Greninja/Lucario were nothing special to me. A wrestler type is definitely welcome and they really play up that theme. His moveset looks great and he demonstrates a great deal of enthusiastic character like a big wrestler should.

I'm extremely pleased with all the included characters and I wouldn't mind if no DLC ever care. What we have now is fantastic.

It reminds me of when they were putting Pac-Man in Smash 4 -- I was very against his inclusion since I wasn't sure he had enough for a full moveset and assumed that they would use the modern design. Once the trailer was actually posted, I was completely on board with him.

Semi-related to this post, I have a very big feeling that Dr.Robotnik is going to be a dlc character for some reason. We didn't see him as a spirit, he's not an assist and no references to him in the game whatsoever so far. Sonic still needs another rep, and with Shadow out he's the next logical villain choice in line for it. It's a bit strange to completely leave out any reference to a represented series's main villain like that, so I can't help but feel that Sakurai's got plans for him. It just seems like he's in the absolute perfect position for it right now.

Expanding lol on this, this can actually work if done correctly. Nintendo already got the ball rolling quickly by seeming to act on this like lightning. If we can make it seem like a fuckton of people are jumping on this opportunity and wanting them to change a lot of minor shit in the game we can force Nintendo into a lose-lose situation: either slip up and look like a big bad evil racist and lose all hype built up almost instantly, or keep caving in to the point of completely alienating most of their smash fanbase and lose all hype built up almost instantly. The only problem with this approach, as with many other approaches similar to this one, is with the execution.

So how exactly is GSP & Elite Battle/Rank going to work? All of this was rather blurry, and it raises some questions: If these matches are going to be taken into account for balance patches, are they only taking 1v1s into account? I can't wrap my head around the idea of balancing for other modes, such as FFA without Items, Doubles, FS Meter on, Items on, and so on. The variety of modes available inherently makes it so that many characters are worse than others, and some buffs or nerfs could sometimes go at the cost of creating an obnoxiously good character for casual or competitive play. All this reminds me of is how good characters in Smash 4 became worse rather than bad characters becoming better. I think such a system kind of just encourages that, in a way. Kind of a mess of a thought, but I remain cautiously interested.

Nintendo could have used Smash to revive just about every old/new property they had and were scared about failing. It originally helped bring Fire Emblem to the West, made everyone interested in F-Zero and Mother, and gave Sakurai the ability to make that new Kid Icarus. All Smash is now is just a meme game that with a creator who cares more about spiting everyone than actually developing a good game (Even after stating numerous times that he won't be back for the next one), characters which exist for no other reason than to promote the next Mario/Pokemon/Fire Emblem, almost a third of the cast makes it "2D Soul Calibur" (Or "Samurai Shodown with platforming"), and the biggest announcements belonging to characters and properties NOT EVEN BY NINTENDO (With attention even being given to the most outplace ones such as Shovel Knight and Rayman).

Where's attention being given to Custom Robo, Eternal Darkness, Sin & Punishment, Wonderful 101, Captain Rainbow, Famicom Wars, Card Hero, Panel de Pon, Geist, Hotel Dusk, Mach Rider, StarTropics, Devil World, Marvelous, Chibi-Robo, ARMS, Codename: S.T.E.A.M., even Fatal Frame (Since Nintenod co-owns thats)?

It probably wasn't their original plan, but until we hear otherwise, here's one possible explanation:

Something stood out in last week's Direct; apart from random gameplay clips at the very start, and other points where you'd expect to see them (images of the full roster, World of Light cutscene), Simon and Richter are completely absent.

We know that Ultimate began development around the time MGSV launched, when Konami's tantrums were at their worst.

Sakurai probably expected to develop and reveal Simon / Richter as the very last characters, due to an expectation of 'licensing difficulties' and other problems, up to the very last minute.

With the game planned to launch in early December, and these characters expected to be 'last-minute' additions, revealing them on (or close to) the prior Halloween would've been very appropriate.

However, if things went much smoother than anticipated, and development of the Castlevania stuff (including the CG trailer) was approved and finished ahead of schedule, then it's fair to assume they might switch the release order and put it out early, as an anti-leak measure.

If so, this would help explain other oddities, like Luigi's new vacuum somehow debuting in the Smash trailer, a full month before Luigi's Mansion 3 even got announced.

Not defending Nintendo, but you can argue that a bunch of these decisions like the promotions of third parties over Nintendo games and just the lack of playable characters from original Nintendo IPs are more Sakurai's fault rather than the fault of Nintendo specifically. As we've heard from that ex-Treehouse member, Sakurai was obsessed with trying to please everyone. This means he also wanted to promote third parties like Street Fighter and Final Fantasy over games like Custom Robo and Wonderful 101. Additionally Sakurai even said that he doesn't even think of considering characters from dead franchises, However that can clearly be Kotaku pushing shit like they did with Yokotaro.

As we've seen with Junichi, Sakurai can take a less active role if he wants to. However he's too concerned with the brand and that people would be upset if he left the project. It remains to be seen if Sakurai is at fault for the shitty roster or if Nintendo themselves are just using Smash Bros as a marketing meme rather than focusing on making a good game. We do know however that Sakurai is obsessed with making kids who've never touched a video game before able to beat the game with no effort, which you can argue Melee did and was just as successful. Gen Z isn't as retarded as people seem to think, they're MUCH smarter than millennials. That said, they're being treated as retarded monkeys who can't handle basic camera systems when they can play games like Call of Duty and Fortnite with no issue. The issue is mostly Sakurai being an indecisive abused developer with no vision for the series. IF the leaks are right about Steve being a playable fighter, then I would be very very concerned and would take back my words about wanting to replace Sakurai. However as of right now Sakurai has been making some really dumb choices as well in terms of the roster. Like Dark Pit and A FUCKING PLANT. While also completely deconfirming characters by making them Assist Trophies rather than having them be ATs in the base game and then later reusing some of the assets as part of an expansion pass system. In any case Sakurai is just as much to blame for the lack of Nintendo characters as much as Nintendo.
