Because to get as far as they did and fail took the simulation game man trying to make Sim Universe with an EA slush fund and steadily having it get hacked down to size for one reason or another by one party or another before splatting out a mediocre toybox with nothing much to do. How well will 'a small studio' fare trying to make five or so games in one with reasonably accurate biology/physics simulation, good RTT and RTS gameplay on a global map, customization of everything, and zoom out to galactic scale? On a technical level, if they did it then, they can do it now, but where are you going to find the expertise? And if you find the expertise, where do you get the funds reliably?
Crowdfunding is a gamble based on when you decide to reveal your preliminary work and at what level of completion. Investors are going to be leery, and if they do buy in, they now have wedged themselves in to seek changes for return on their investment, and they are bound to be dumb fucks who don't care about sustained profit or the successful fulfillment of the product itself, only how they can pump and dump you for the highest cash in-cash out ratio.

The game is not Wright's original vision, and it's distressing to see this contrarian meme forced lately. It was consented to by Wright that his vision be compromised by the 'Cute' faction and the streamliners, who wanted to cut the game down to a glorified toy for children. The notion that EA themselves played a part in this streamlining is intensely plausible but ultimately unknown, as nothing has seen the light of day.
Instead, you have the definite information early post release regarding a Team Cute vs Team Science schism which paints a picture of backbiting, hamstringing and abandonment of prior work, and a later leaker who said that the teams' efforts were scattered over tens of different prototype builds that hadn't been optimized or bonded together into a single game; the tone of the latter always came across as indirectly apologistic to the very people who'd be responsible for destruction of any unified direction, somehow. But for whatever reasons, subversions, real hurdles or those merely imagined by the devs, the good stuff was scrapped, and they redeveloped from there. Substantial time was no doubt wasted stitching over holes left by taking out this or that mechanic or metagame complexity and having to figure out an 'easy' substitute.
In short; with or without EA applying pressure through the faction we already know existed that contradicted Wright and eventually brought him to compromise with them, the original vision with harder simulation, proper body physics, more complex tribal & civilization stages, and who knows what sort of space stage metagame, was abandoned. Wright then took the bullet by saying, 'oh well I gave this change in direction the OK, so it's my fault, don't blame the streamliners that twisted my arm to get there.' We have no reason not to be suspicious.
Now, years after the fact, we get people like you covering the asses of Chris Hecker and the Creature Sneaker crew, folks with more responsibility than Wright for the subversion by being its initiators, by taking his claim of responsibility at face value and ignoring all context of it being a PR firefighting move when angry fans were demanding Chris's' head on a pike for crashing the game with no survivors, by making sure the last couple of years of development weren't spent polishing final versions of the 2005 demos and getting them properly linked together, but making a shittier parallel version by ripping things out and patching them over again.
It makes me rather suspicious that it's a low-intensity astroturfing effort to subvert and 'disprove' a core mythology, a foundational truth of the 'fuck AAA devs' school of thought on /v/ and elsewhere, that, mismanagement or Wright's grudging consent to a direction change or no, this potentially wonderful project was wrecked from the inside out by insipid faggots and disinterested profit-minded corporates more than anything else, as is continually happening today. In fact, the insipid faggots tend to run the show now.
After all, if Spore's failure can somehow be pinned on Wright alone just by repeating this faggotry every now and again, so the thinking may go, it somehow 'disproves' this model of thought and retroactively wipes away all observation and all existence of the entire downsliding trend of great projects getting meddled to death by dumb fags. And then the dumb fags get to pretend they're the visionaries, the real hot shit, as they ruthlessly trample over their preceding betters, rushing to fingerpaint all over the walls with hemorrhoidal shit in their filthy new intern hives.
Or it could just be one man with bad opinions sockpuppeting a shitpost thread. Either way, it's probably not worth this much effort spent in reply.
