Albion was always the faggot faction. You either played Midgard to beat shit down in melee or Hibernia to nuke shit with magic. I always ended up being a Midgardfag cause i liked their unique races more and their questing area was overall darker, felt like you were constantly in dangerous territory.

Good, race actually matters to a degree. If you play an Elf Champion for instance you're gonna just be shittier than a Furbolg or Human.

It's an MMO, you want to be in a group. Might wanna scout out the server to see if they're missing anything but otherwise play what you like. I found being a healbitch to still be fun in this though because they took the DnD style of cleric for their healers, IE can still use weapons and armor.

Anyways i didn't even know this had private servers so i'll check it out if only for nostalgia.

You might like the Warden, OP. It's Hibernia's Friar mirror-class, a spellcaster/melee hybrid with powerful auras and group buffs, and some minor healing and stat-based buffs (the most powerful stat buffs are reserved for the pure Healer classes, like DruidHealer/Cleric).

You might also like the Bard, which is a purely group-focused class with lots of auras and buffs, the always-vital run speed aura, CC, and some heals.

Don't torture the poor man. Bards are horrible to actually play, and their main stat Empathy actually does nothing.

Are Buffbots still a thing? If so, stay away from any dedicated buffing classes like Shaman.

What you need to know is that a player with Cleric/Druid/Healer buffs or even the weaker stat buffs is at an ENORMOUS disadvantage vs. a buffer player. Needing a buffbot was a downside of DAOC RvR.

The thing back in the day was that everyone and their mom had a second account dedicated to a buff character that just followed their main character around. Which made playing the class as a main pretty pointless.

I didn't say that. What I said is that if you don't have any buffs, especially stat buffs, and you try to fight someone who has buffs, especially stat buffs, you have pretty much no chance. It's why people would keep "buffbot" characters on a separate account for themselves so they don't ever have to go into combat below maximum power. They keep these buffbots in the safe areas you teleport into when you go to RvR. When their main character teleports in, they switch to the buffbot, load their main character up with buffs, and then switch back to their main character to go fight. These buffbots were always the pure healer classes (Druid/Cleric/Healer) because those classes always have the most powerful stat buffs. No organized party would go RvR or PVE without being loaded up with buffs.

Certain hybrid classes get weaker versions of stat buffs, but also other kinds of buffs the pure healer classes didn't get, like chants. Chants would do things like add damage to your attacks, or increase your attack speed, or increase your resource regeneration, or give you bonus armor, stuff like that.

Now that I think about it, mass RvR would also often devolve into who could get their AoE stun off faster on a train. It… wasn't all sunshine and roses.

I have now played the game a little, so excuse the incoming blogpost. Just done the first kill quests, and im around level 4. put three points in nurture atm. Im possibly going to be a druid, to heal & buff members. damn, it is really an old-school mmo, because shit is cryptic, and looking at videos (video related), its hard to follow what to do now. Now looks like at one more level I must go to another place, so I will do it soon.

Now I will go in my way as much as I can, so if I post again here, it will for any specific stuff I find, so dont worry about any other blogspot posts. But just in case I ask if besides what posted before: Is there anything else I should know? Any tips at leveling/specializations as a druid?

Its actually pretty simple, you have a starting class with a specific starting area and the first 5 level are more or less your tutorial time.

Once you are Level 5 you get send to the main city of your faction, there you advance to your main class that will define your character for the rest of the game.

After that Dark Age of Camelot properly begins, depending on your level you have different Zones to choose from to level(speak grind) or do quest in.

The goal in classic DAoC was to reach Level 50 and do your class Quest to be ready for PvP.

In PvP you got the Realm Rank system, which gives you additional abilities for defeating enough enemy players.

Besides having fun in PvP, you have to return to PvM some time to find replacement for your gear that will worn down fighting and dieing against other players.

Additionally to that classic DAoC had gigantic Mobs living in a special high End Zone and Corners of the PvP zone that could only be slain by a massive raid of People and that would drop the best equipment.

Everyone who wants to try out DAoC should be aware that with the exception of a few classes in Albion, the game is centered and balanced around Group play.

Without a balanced group leveling was a torture and several classes had to specialize in a way that they could only survive with a group in later levels.

Later the add ons changed a lot and made many things easier, some things were for the better, others for the worse.

Regardless I had 6 years full of fun with DAoC and consider it one of my best experiences I had in gaming.

One design flaw that DAoC has was that the Buffs of the support classes give a percentage bonus to stats, depending how much skill points the Buffer spent on the skill.

This basically means that Characters with buffs could explode in their stats and become several magnitudes stronger than a character without buffs.

In the classic DAoC this wasn't a problem in the beginning since everyone was limited by the equipment how much they could max out their stats that would be enhanced by the buffs.

You basically had the choice of magical equipment from PvE that gave stats but had a shit quality or crafted items which could have a high quality, but gave no stat bonus besides their defense and attack rating.

However shortly before the first Add On a Patch brought Spell Crafting into the game, which allowed Crafters to add stat boni to crafted items and people reacted by creating high quality designer armor that would max out the stats their character could have, thus guaranteeing the highest effectiveness of the buffs.

This changed PvP drastically in several ways.

In classic you still could kill a buffed player with an unbuffed character, it was difficult but not impossible. However by the time of the first Add On Shrouded Island, fighting a buffed player with an unbuffed character was like going against the terminator with a spoon.

This was really shit for Stealth classes, who usually played solo because their stealth ability didn't work with the speed buffs that groups liked to run around with.

But it also changed the play in groups, because to get the highest buffs the supporting classes would have to spent most of their skill points on it, which means they would sucks at their other abilities like healing.

So people solved the problem by getting a second account with a character that was only specialized for buffing an nothing else. Groups and Players would then buff themselves up at the starting base and go into PvP with full power, to the detriment of everyone who couldn't or wouldn't pay for a second account.

I played Bard. A lot. You're a jack of all trades, master of none.

Everyone else heals better.

Everyone else CCs better.

Everyone else fights better.

Everyone else has 3 stats that do something.

Pick literally anything else, unless you enjoy being around for only your instruments which are requried to be equipped for your songs. No other class is forced to put away their weapon for endurance buffs.

I made an error earlier. Charisma is the useless primary stat, not Empathy. Empathy is your stat for healing, which is secondary on a Bard.

Oh I actually quite liked them as one of the few people that liked the Trials of Atlantis Add On in general, despite the buggy mess it was at the beginning.

Version 1.65 of DAoC may have been a stable and somewhat balanced state of the game, but it got rather stale with the time and the old nature of the game was broken with Spellcrafting, not with the Artifacts or any other stuff of later Add Ons.

Before Spellcrafting several Regions had a constant stream of people coming and going, since they had to search and look for new magical items to replace their old. After Spellcrafting entire regions became Ghost towns since their content became obsolete.

Why release a free to play version of an old game, unless they will put microtransactions to it? Im sacred. Also, a minor question, but there are like around 6000 players in oficial DaoC, but are there in one or two servers, or there are more than that number?

I played DAoC in it's hayday and wouldn't even think about going back. Class balance is a mess. Pvp is focused around AOE ranged SAP that lasts up to 5 minutes, and aoeing everyone down while sapped.

i was typing up a bunch of reasons why eso is shit, but i stopped because i just don't care enough about that shit ass game. don't play it. it's terrible in many ways from cheese to cheats and lag. it's nothing like daoc

the is also dead because zenimax is obsessed with making the game as annoying as possible with resource management. eso is ultimately a game about fighting your stamina or mana bar

This is true, but also somewhat false. DAoC had the great idea to mix the class abilities, so the classes of the three realms play differently from each other.

While this made some classes stronger than others, the sheer number of classes and races dwarf those of later and todays MMOs.

For example in WoW you only have a shit balance with only 11 classes and 13 races that all play the same, in DAoC you have 45 different classes and 21 races and you needed to know all the strength and weaknesses of these 45 classes and in which race combination they could show up.

This guaranteed that regardless of much of an imbalance there was at any time during the games history, there was always a counter to the current favorite class running around and people you could beat even with one of the weaker classes.

I loved playing the Odd classes in DAoC and screwing with peoples expectations.

Also a half truth, 5min was the maximum duration some of those spells could last, but these were reduced by your characters resistance.

Also there where abilities to counter and purge stuns and other effects, so the game developed a huge tactical side in group pvp centering around ground control and effect management.

The way DAoC deals with damage, resistance, armor classes and status effects is honestly one of the major reasons why people should have a look at it, regardless of its dated way of gameplay.

That is true, but I have come to the realization that those game are not worse than todays MMO, where most of the time you are solo grinding quests and then enter groups only to grind equipment in dungeons.

Socializing with other people to defeat the game was a much greater part back then.

I cannot understand how people can make this claim. ToA was a buggy mess in the beginning, but once it was fixed it gave the game much needed late game content.

It is true that the PvP balance in SI may have been the most stable around patch 1.65 and SI, but the game was otherwise fucked. Entire regions lay barren and void of players, because Spell crafting made their content obsolete and people cared only about raiding the two highest level dungeons that SI brought.

On top of that, instead of hunting special mobs for the gear they dropped, the PvE degenerated otherwise into grinding for money so you could finance a Crafter and the materials to make your designer armor.

If anything it was the lackluster nature of later Add Ons that killed the game more. Mythics made the mistake of spending the effort of creating new beginner Zones with every Add On that remained largely unused and made the game look more barren.

Catacombs new classes were also a bigger mess than the Artifacts or Master Level abilities, it brought Instanced Dungeons into the Game and then nothing, because all of its PvE content was overshadowed by the quality of items in the Trials of Atlantis Zones.

Darkness Rising, Labyrinth of the Minotaur and the Dragon Campaign were not bad, however they only updated and reworked the parts of the game that were outdated or left behind and brought nothing really new into the game.
