There's Project Zomboid (mod scene is decent, but it's been in early access forever), but my personal favorite one is Breach & Clear Deadline. It combines the planning and execution of a realistic team-based strategy game but has zombies and crafting and stuff. I wish more games had SWAT taking on weird shit.

Dying Light or Dead Island maybe?

Dead Island just bores you to tears. Dying Light, despite its kitchen sink design, manages to be a pretty fun game if you ignore the awful plot and main antagonist. It's good to see Techland is at least able to learn from their mistakes and made Dying Light a more compact and focused game. Seems like they once again are trying to learn from their past mistakes by hiring Avellone as lead writer for DL2.

He's a big bad big guy who has big people with big guns that are just big thugs taking whatever they want with big force. The big bad also had a big qte for a big boss fight making him a big disappointment. Then techland released their first dlc for dying light which actually added a proper final boss and none of that corner cutting bullshit.

Unturned, though I'd wait for version 4.0 or Unturned 2 as Nelson's calling it is released, since it's being made in UE4 and optimization in Unity is awful (assuming you have a laptop or a toaster). I'd recommend playing singleplayer or with friends, as the community seems to be full of children.
