The other day i saw a recommendation on youtube talking about 'what happened to Idra?' which -god knows its ancient history to younger anons- was basically a pro starcraft player /v/ enjoyed laughing at because he was monstrously salty every time he lost, he once lost to a protoss hallucination rush and had to be committed for a week.
Turns out he quit streaming and took up weight lifting and become a swole lunk who says 'lifting calms me, competitive gaming only fuelled my ragefits' and it made me wonder what happened to all these people.
I never followed them but i know there were people like that 'fatal1ty' guy who shilled gamer grub that were big names back in the day. A few i looked up turned into fat, prematurely balding guys that coach overwatch and hearthstone players for money now.
Do you remember anyone from this period? do you know anyone yourself who tried to "break through the 24 and over decline" wall to 'go pro'?
What happened to them?

hmm, yeah, i don't know what fatality is doing.
usually it kinda ends as you expect, you stop doing the only thing you were good at because that's all you've been doing for the past few years, you end up in some shitty job, playing casually from time to time with friends.
today ex pros have it easier, because streaming and e-sport is popular, they can try to stay within the community as casters or coaches for the teams. and, well, retiring today is also different from retiring in the past, today e-sport is such a big buck, those guys have more motivation and can "see the future".
I think dota players are one of the luckiest, picked up some fukin w3 mod as their career choice mid 2000s, suddenly valve revived it in 2010 making it a big hit.
look at loda, started in 2006, he retired this year and is coaching a team. living the dream

They got old, the games they trained for years are either no longer supported in tournament sponsorship or there's no longer a sizable community and audience. There was this Canadian fag who went to be a bigshot Starcraft-Pro, then he retired and just live is life in South Korea, then no news. It's pretty sad that we don't get a Documentary for the old gamer pros from 15-20 years ago, but we have plenty for self-important indie retards.

If you want to see what happens when you get old and never leave pro-gaming just look at the FGC. It's full of retards attempting to stay relevant. Over the last few years they got a boost and started becoming an actual "sport" on ESPN while turning their backs on the original fans in an attempt to make more weed money. There are a few out of Japan that seemed to have gone through that period with their dignity intact but almost everyone from America has become a shill and a laughing stock.

CS 1.6 I kept up with. Most old top players stayed with 1.6 up until 2012 until csgo came out. Half took the jump to csgo, no one liked the mechanics and they fizzled out. Still top players though from 1.6. Some teams I remember. cArn was in fnatic (swedes), he was the tactician leader. He became a fnatic manager in 2012 or so lived in Korea, dunno anymore.
Most top teams stayed moving into csgo, golden 5 Polish team neo pasha etc, NiP forget their names Swedes, one some were in fnatic like f0rest, and some guy's name starting with an X. US players same thing, iBP, cloud9(EG) n0thing Jordan Gilbert, he went to college 2013ish. A lot still play, the leagues are accessible online, and Lans are twice a year in US like ESEA.
Lurrpis was the only Finnish who lived and played for a US team in 1.6, he made a Finnish teqm for the last tourney of 1.6 in a Japan only tournament. He spoke often at hltv.org and in esea, the pros and try hards had a community there. Was a nice time back then. Globally teams tried csgo like Brazil's team with cogu the sniper dude. Other rqndom names EG froD, NiP HeatoN (with black dude mentioned in thread 2005), HeatoN and black dude were advertised in benQ's first 120hz monitor in 2011.

That fat faggot's video game experience can be summarized as "anything that isn't Mario is fucking trash and Nintendo is the god savior of gaming." His "book" about SMB3 is instead a bizarre and poorly written autobiography about his pathetic life and how everything revolved around Nintendo. And yet apparently, despite his complete lack of any relevant video game knowledge, the Escapist is letting him bring back his godawful video game show where he'll sperg endlessly about how terrible it is that every game isn't Mario.
I would get upset about this, but hey, at least I'm not a 40-year-old, obese, balding, diabetic sperg living in a basement with anger management issues and a desire to see everything in the US that isn't a coastal megalopolis completely annihilated. Being a pro gamer sounds like a really shitty existence, your hobby becomes your job and you get angry at what you loved just as you would at work. It's worse than having your dad as your boss. You come home from work decide to enjoy yourself, only to realize that you're doing the same exact thing you did working. There's no escape anymore.

if we can transmit the old culture to the young we can bypass the mass market. try getting console users you know the get old pos and buy them old steam games. for the price of a new fan and six bucks on steam you can give them so much. make a new hardcore gamer today.

>there are anons ITT who are seriously saying that esports are a fun and good thing
What has happened to this board?
On-topic, though, I think most pre-streamer pros have gone on to either kill themselves or play the game more casually on streams, as other anons have mentioned.

I used to like the FGC before it sold out, back when the rebuffed any notions of being compared to esports
I guess nothing lasts forever
