The iPad Pro now has the graphics capabilities of the Xbox One S. Gaze upon the future of mobile gaming and tremble. This is going to be the standard UX for video game releases in just two years. They’re already shilling Assassin’s Creed running at 120FPS.

bdf219  No.15657019

Not very impressive when you account for die shrinks, the fact that consoles are based on mobile technology from AMD from 2012, when they were in a poor position for cpu hardware but their gpus were good.

faggots not welcome

0289bb  No.15657052

Accounting for the fact that consoles are already laptop hardware, the iPad is going to be far more expensive, and this sucker is releasing 3 years after the Xbox One S, it's really not that impressive.

Is the tablet market even still viable? They were all the rage 5 years or so ago, but these days, it's been a long time since I've seen somebody in public with a big-ass tablet. Tablets were always unwieldy and awkward. They're useful for very specific niches (warehouse workers for constant inventory management, delivery people, some POS systems where it could be cheaper than a true register) but not much else. Even an ideal tablet leaves you holding a giant rectangle in your hands and is awkward at best.

Xbox One S has the same hardware as the original S = slim. So it's be beating 5 year-old hardware, which was about as capable at the time as a mid-range gaming PC.

0289bb  No.15657070

>>15657059

Ah, I thought the S was the competitor to the PS4 Pro or something. So that's even less exciting.

AMD Jaguar was a fantastic CPU for mobile and low power situations. Their mainstream desktop CPUs were not competitive, but AMD Jaguar was great. It was an Intel Atom competitor and it absolutely crushed Atom in performance and battery life/power consumption.

But yes, it's massively outdated at this time, and mobile CPUs are never really overly competitive with desktop parts even when they're new. It's not overly impressive when you consider Xbone and PS4 are just using moar coars versions of CPUs and GPUs designed to be put into tablets and netbooks 6 years ago.

baa2f0  No.15657091

PS4 and Xbox one should had used Power7 CPUs.

Now the PS5 will get 7nm rysen and that is miles ahead of the very shitty jaguars.

I expect 4k 60fps easily.

7a8864  No.15657098

>>15657081

polite sage for double post, but part of why PS4 and Xbone used mobile CPUs and GPUs instead of something more powerful is because of stupid EU power consumption laws. One of the major reasons why PS4 and Xbone don't have better CPUs and GPus are due to the EU not allowing Sony and MS to put more power hungry chips into their console.

And just an FYI, for Xbone2 and PS5, those power requirements get even more bullshit.

>And just an FYI, for Xbone2 and PS5, those power requirements get even more bullshit.

No they don't. 7nm processes are already just around the corner. That's less than a third of the size that current gen console hardware use.

I forget the actual numbers, but EU is dictating that gaming consoles should use a draw amount of power while in standby, under operation, etc. There were a specific set of rules for this generation, and by next generation, they'll get even more limiting.

You can see they are aiming for less than 70w power usage for consoles, playing games. PS4 running Killzone can pull over 150w. A lot of 7nm (or 14nm if they don't make a huge jump) will not have enough power savings to make PS5 and Xbone2 have a giant leap over this generation. Because the new process is going to be spent mostly on cutting power consumption instead of increasing performance.

Global Foundaries (they suck) has 14nm power consumption 60% lower than 28nm. That brings killzone exactly to 90w, not enough to hit the 70w EU requirements if PS5 releases after January 1st, 2019. And that's only giving it "up to" 55% more performance.

Next generation consoles are fucked thanks to EU cucks.

>7nm (or 14nm if they don't

No, it will be 7nm. I can guarantee you that, because the new consoles will probably keep using AMD hardware because it's power efficient, they have proven to be reliable partners for Sony and Microsoft and they have lower prices than Nvidia or Intel will ever offer. Future AMD chips are being made by TSMC now, and TSMC is going all out for 7nm. I think new consoles will be announced in 2020-2022, this generation will be over 7 years old by then, nearly the same lifespan as the PS3 and Xbox 360.

bdf219  No.15657454

>>15657430

7nm is launching this year according to AMD. Or maybe it was the last fiscal quarter. Next gen consoles will likely be zen2 or whatever zenx is. AMD is the only chip designer it makes sense for a first party to partner with. Intel is a decade behind right now, and Nvidia burnt all bridges and refuses to make an affordable mainstream solution. Zen2/navi will likely be what the consoles work on. I believe a new vega chip is launching soon too but for workstations. Its capabilities may be a good preview of navi.

5b7de1  No.15657455

>>15657430

>No, it will be 7nm

Not necessarily since GloFo has withdrawn from 7nm only TSMC can do that for the foreseeable future and I don't think they can handle the sheer amount of chips they'll have to make since fucking everyone wants to launch something in 7nm ASAP. and mobile / servers markets have dibs on the production.

>Is this really all because of the 7nm architechture?

It does play a part, but in general Apple just has the best ARM SoC out there to begin with, 7nm just makes it able to be significantly more efficient and the tablet form factor also allows it to run at a higher TDP on top of that.

Do note that apple shit can't even perform remotely close to advertised specs due to heating issues, but yes, consoles are dirt-tier gimped PCs, we know. We've known since Gen 7.

b84109  No.15664648

>>15657091

On modern consoles, hardware specs do not matter for framerate. 60 fps has been possible for multiple generations now, game publishers would just rather use those resources for things that show up in screenshots. The only reason you get to play AAA games at 60 fps or higher on PC is because the games are made for console hardware and you can just overpower them.

If we start getting 60 fps as a standard on consoles, it's because the wider availability of streaming 60 fps video allows it to be marketed more easily, not because the hardware got better.

>ARM's heterogeneous big.LITTLE design or Wii's Starlet

I just want to say these aren't at all similar.

They serve different purposes. One is to optimize powerdraw depending on workload (switching core groups automatically), the other is just a coprocessor.

The Switch has that ARM feature but they don't even use it.

Huh, I was under the impression that when standby mode was entered, Broadway shut down entirely, and Starlet temporarily assumed CPU duties.

I also have a vague memory of some PC motherboards with a full Linux SoC onboard, allowing them to display POST onscreen without even having functional CPU/RAM plugged in.

I can't find any mention of either in a quick search, so maybe I'm misremembering.

Wii doesn't really have a standby mode unless you enable connect24. Don't really remember how that works. Normally it runs IOS which handle IO and stuff.

Also never heard of such boards, weird.

Although back in 2008 or so some mainboards has a full CPU and tiny OS embedded in, meant to give you something to browse the web or check emails on only after a few seconds of booting up.
