In-universe, sort of. It's explained that there's basically only heaven and everyone goes there, so life can only be worse than death. But Vergil on the good path dies and comes back wanting to do good in life and argues against him.

Realistically a relatively short period of life vs. an eternal afterlife would seem to be a small thing to suffer through if bad while if good would be worthwhile to life since there's something that can't be done in the afterlife there. If you talk to Kerghan with enough diplomatic stats he'll agree and only pursue his personal death.

The real question is why there isn't some kind of crusade to end the black necromancy that can permanently keep someone from reaching true death. You meet a guy in the tutorial area who is cursed to the exact same "eternal pain" that the main bad guy is just for the crime of common banditry. A truly righteous end would be to eliminate this form of magic somehow.

I'm actually in the final bits of an Arcanum play right now, just doing all the sidequests before I go to Vendigroth. Just did the ancient gods quest. It's a shame you don't get any special dialog with the researcher for returning to him after the final quest.

Most of the time these options exist in truly free RPGs. The kind which actually live up to their name and let you pick and play a role.

In E.Y.E. it's a bit hard to discern the bad guys, and by that I mean that the war seems utterly pointless. There is no good side, only death but you can switch sides late in the game.

The original Infinity blade let you join the villain if you got his health bar down far enough, but that's mobile shit which will fade into obscurity in a few decades.

The first Way of the Samurai let you fight all the way up to the big bad, then join him as his right-hand man. Afterwards the two of you have a great time oppressing the town but it all goes to shit along with the fall of the shogunate anyway.

If Chiang Kai-Shek had won the Chinese Civil War then the whole of China would be like Taiwan.
