What video game sequels/reboots were darker and edgier than the original and actually made it work?

Custom Robo: Battle Revolution (the GCN one) is the only game I can think of, and even then it's a late game twist (albiet a well foreshadowed one).

I don't know if it counts since only the second sequel fixed it but Jak 2 was too edgy from the original, Naughty Dog then made 3 more edgy than the original but less than 2s PURE EDGE tier shit.

I know it was broadly criticized even when it came out (so much that they toned the edge down in the sequels), but I always liked the Prince in Prince of Persia: Warrior Within.

People have always complained about his change in personality, lots of fans threw a hiss fit back in the day, but considering everything that happened to him during and after the ending of the previous game, I've always thought it was natural that he'd be pissed and lost his cool. I tend to compare his situation in Warrior Within with Ash in Army of Darkness compared to the previous movies.

He mostly killed sand zombie things, not people. Also none of the other soldiers and warmongers in the first game seemed to be dyed hair BDSM rejects. The dahaka thing was entirely invented by the second game as an excuse to justify the new fucking horrible direction. The first game even has him learning to become a better person, not an edgelord. The change in direction was entirely due to an attempt to appeal to edgy little shits and the story was written to come up with an excuse for it. Nothing about the first one logically led to WW. It's particularly stupid because the first one was widely praised for its very good atmosphere, while trying to appeal to edgelords was really popular at the time, so it was a very obvious sales over quality move.

Metroid Prime 2 literally had a dark world mechanic, and 3 had the whole "introduce squadmates just so they can die, and also you're corrupted" angle, but while it's darker subject matter I don't know if I'd qualify those sequels as full-on edgy.

Just Cause 2 might qualify, people love that one but often forget how much of a complete edgelord Rico is in it.
