Vid related. Mario has some great music but the orchestral rendition of Gusty Garden Galaxy screens the good vibes and feelings of adventure a platformer should give and i don't think theres a better song in the entire Mario franchise.

What songs do you think are the standout absolute best for a series?

Despite all the arranges and re-renditions of Ys music across the many years, I still think the PC-88 original version of Feena for Ys I remains one of the pinnacles of the franchise's musical canon, despite my synth loveboner for Ryo Yonemitsu's PCE renditions of Ys 1 up to 4. The original has a dream-like quality to it which simply cannot be reproduced, especially the climax around the 1:20 mark. The way the instruments were realized for the PC-88 and the amount of depth they lend to this song is amazing.

It doesn't scream adventure quite as much as the rest of the music in Ys, but it definitely captures the prelude to an adventure. Falcom used Feena as the tune for their company logo for some time (for the Ys games at least), and one could definitely tell why.

The Mario Galaxy games were actually a great example of how not to do an orchestrated soundtrack. Koji Kondo's simplistic melodies required much more arrangement to take advantage of all the instruments of an orchestra. Yoshi's Island still has the best music of the platforming series.

Japanese composers don't play instruments: they play your heart directly….unlike westerners

Embed gets my vote for best Zelda music. I would leave that title screen on all night as a kid just to listen to it.

Trumpets sound gross, they are only good for waking people up.

Reminder that Demon's Souls will always have the best soundtrack out of all the Souls games.

VISIONNERZ for Darius Gaiden is the kind of song that just perfectly encapsulates an entire franchise. Weird-ass avant-garde operatic EDM with a voice in the background chanting "CLOSE YOUR EYES" and "HEAD HEAD HEAD" couldn't be a better fit to a series of games about shooting giant robotic fish in space where the backgrounds transform into something abstract during boss fights. It really captures the feeling of the greater cosmos with its heavy synth pads, and the bio-organic enemies you encounter through the mix of softer pianos contrasted with the harsh distorted piano near the end.

As a bit of background, Taito allowed the composer to choose the specifications of the sound chip for the game's arcade board so he could realize his music however he wanted, they really put that much trust into his skills as a composer. VISIONNERZ doesn't just play over stage 1, but it extends well to the stage 1 boss fight and continues playing over stage 2, just to make the game feel even more like one cohesive journey.
