What the wii really needed was some way to at least charge the controller if you ask me. Or some sort of "T" shaped cord that could go from the nunchuck, to the wiimote and fill the battery slot/controller backing, and the GC port at the same time, and avoid the need for battery anyhow. Was not a big fan of it needing actual batteries to be kept around to replace compared to the PS3's controller (which I play corded anyhow).

actually it started as a playstation accessory,
everyone claims the wii was first but it was sony who developed the controllers first.
it was originally called playstation , they couldn't figure out color tracking so they eventually added the glowing balls of light.
Nintendo saw them present this at tech demo conference and started developing the wiimotes right after.

No, in fact Nintendo didn't even develop the original Wii remote tech in-house, it was sold to them by someone who had already approached other companies but they were turned down, and the meeting with Nintendo happened to be about the time Iwata was coming up with his "blue ocean" strategy so it was serendiptous timing.
The Wii wasn't even Nintendo's first foray into motion controls. The Power Glove (developed by Mattel but with oversight and licensing by Nintendo) existed before that, and there were other motion control systems available for the Amiga and the Atari.
Sony's "balls" demo is just one more example of motion controls being attempted, nothing more than a stick with a ball on it, not an actual controller.
The Wii remote as we know it began on the Gamecube.

From memory the system was one used during the actual development of the console, not a devkit. So it could've provided insight into the console depending what was on it, think for example like the server that had the source code for one of the Turok games.
