Great soundtrack, solid gameplay, good challenge, fantastic art direction that has aged like wine

Is rayman really underappreciated? Its a fairly big franchise.

The original platformers, despite holding up very well, generally get forgotten in favor of the (admittedly incredibly excellent) Origins and the (much less excellent but still nice) Legends. And Ubisoft seems to be more interested in the Minions I mean Rabbids.

They're both nice (I can agree that from an artstyle perspective, it's pretty good) but they're far incredibly easier than Rayman 1. The level design in Origins was especially built to rush the levels for the time attack challenges and I hardly recall any challenging moments whereas Rayman 1 has a casual filter starting from Music World 2.

I find the first Rayman to have fairly medicore gameplay. The great art and music carries it.

Anyone who thought turning basic movement capabilities into powerups, no matter how quickly you obtain them, can go fuck themselves. Rayman has been consistently third rate, though in the past 15 years or so that practically means "not in the nadir so better than the competition by default".

Rayman 2 is a masterpiece, and never got a true sequel. A shame, really.

The new games have a sense of flow. Rayman 1 is one of those games that's forever stopping you dead. Having to stand still to charge your attack isn't fun.

good platformers have a sense of rhythm. Watch a speed run for something like Donkey Kong Country. Then watch one for Rayman, and see how rigid that game looks in comparison.

I could barely read the logo on the cover you posted. Had to make it out from the katakana above. Which kind of surprises me I did, and quickly at that, since I haven't exactly been hard focused on learning moon at this point; probably also a factor that I recall Astal got a western release, so I've at least heard of it.

I need to learn nip at some point, if only to read these two massive Nekojiru mangas I have.
But yeh, Astal is really good. It had some amazing sprite work at the time and suprisingly decent voice actors. I remember liking the gameplay a lot but I haven’t played it in years so I don’t know how that aspect has aged.

Even so, locking away the sprint ability for a large portion of the game. Lot of stages where you have to sit and wait for the screen to slowly scroll. Rayman's a slow paced game. I think the choice to go with such large detailed sprites in a 4:3 aspect ratio is part of the problem. The game feels cramped.
