I think it may be a coping mechanism as his situation gets worse. His mom is probably in bad shape now, his government check is probably just barely scraping them by due to how he wastes it, and I imagine a part of him knows that once his mom is gone he has no idea how to live on his own and has nobody left to take care of him, which is where this whole fantasy pops in.
I think a big part of this could also be blamed on the church he went to kicking him out. At least when he was going there was always a little something there to keep him from getting to this level and if he were still going that community could have supported him once his mom died, but considering they kicked him out in the first place maybe not.
