Bloated budgets and staff are starting to bite these studios in the ass and they need ridiculous numbers of sales to break even. Nobody here likes cinematic crap because that shit get implemented into modern western games (through scripted events, QTEs, etc) at the cost of actual gameplay. It's also all about showing off "technical prowess" of a next-gen system, as well as making the vidya genre an acceptable media form to normalfags and libtards, thus most of the budget comes into graphix.
Visual novels are pretty much a genre on its own, although it's commonly used too as a (rather cheap) format in other japanese games to convey the story between sessions of gameplay but without sacrificing it. There are also VNs with gameplay elements (PC98 titles in general, Ace Attorney, Little Busters, Zero Escape, etc) and a big chunk of VNs have also more endings/routes than a post-WD Telltale game.
