That wasn't for pirated copies but for copies that broke the street release-date. I'd like to see data on that; dark souls originally had p2p multiplay connectivity, notoriously unreliable, so its not like the invaders were hosted on some master server.

The game would have just spawned them based on the internal clock, most likely. There are a number of offline phantoms already in the game (Maneater Mildred, Knight of Thorns, etc.) It would be interesting to see if an un-updated version of DaS for console would exhibit such behaviour if you set your clock to before the release date.

Earthbound has two versions. One is unbeatable (game crashes when porky turns the devil machine off and it wipes the game file).
The other spawns about 3x foes and makes the game a lot harder by virtue of non stop battles. That said, if you are smart and routinely patch your ass up, grinding is not only possible but heavily encouraged. The whole game becomes one long marathon akin to Victory Road.

I thought they were separate anti-piracy features in all versions, but early pirates just didn't manage or didn't know to circumvent both.
Some Konami games on the NES just made the game loop on earlier levels or made levels unbeatable. Others were nicer like Bucky 'o Hare, which turned made everything kill you in one hit, something you could also access with a special password. I had a pirated copy back in the day and was confused why it gave you something that looked like a life bar.
I think Zen: Intergalactic Ninja also had some increased or instant-kill damage thing, but I'm not sure if that's all it did or if the game was beatable.
Zen: Intergalactic Ninja is a pretty good game and I'd recommend it. Lots of variety in the stages, and it's got the usual amount of Konami polish.

The guy who runs that site used a rom on an emulator when the games released, and originally thought the anti-piracy feature was actually a normal part of the game at first. When he started reporting on the game, he claimed EXP gain was disabled during the tutorial, then it wasn't until he finished the tutorial and still wasn't gaining EXP that he found out it was an anti-piracy feature. I remember there was some backlash against him from moralfags way back then, because he pirated a game. And nowadays it's one of the few major pokemon sites that hasn't had a scandal over being run/moderated by pedophiles. I wonder how it must feel to have people bitch at you for being a pirate, then have all your competitors end up wanting to fuck children, so no one gives a fuck about you downloading a DS rom once anymore.

Most of these gimmick anti-piracy methods spring more often on legit customers than pirates, and are more of a marketing thing than anything else.
Anyway, Game Dev Tycoon released a "pirated" version of their own game on release, where the only difference was that the games players made in game would be pirated at an increasing rate, eventually making it impossible to profit from their games no matter how good they were. This was supposed to send a message. What's interesting about this technique though is that it actually worked (since they had the most popular torrent for a couple weeks after release, and it was widely distributed). Better than that though is that it made a bunch of publicity for the game, earning them more shekels for their trickery.

Originally if you played it offline you would get a boost after dying and dying 3 times in a row would make this stage quite managable, easy even, since you would be dealing massive damage to the credit names. It wasn't until some time after the release that the game went always online because of denuvo or something so that meant you would never need the offline boost because if you were playing the game you were connected to the internet :^)
So it's kind of hard to say whether this was harder for pirates or not since the initial release was designed in a way that it was basically identical in difficulty but without the 'getting help from others' theme included, but since the later editions and PC version introduced denuvo this feature was deliberately and specifically removed, even though it would have cost more time and effort than just leaving it in, which suggests that the action was taken specifically to spite people who couldn't play online, i.e. pirates.
You can see in the video that it's post 1.06 patch, if you view plays of it before the 1.06 patch it's barely even as hard as a standard difficulty 2hu mid game stage.

Also I might add that I don't really understand how the always online works but if you set the game to work offline in the piss4 or (((steam))) version which I assume still exists to some degree you would be just as cucked regardless of whether you were a pirate or not. So rather than spiting pirates specifically it's just spiting anyone that doesn't like the idea of big brother spying on them 24/7 even if they were a good enough goy to buy the game.

What you're talking about is pirates not being able to access an online feature, which is a happy coincidence rather than an intentional and funny punishment.

If it weren't for several checks the game makes that occasionally crashes it at certain points and absolutely crashes it at the final boss and then deletes your save, Earthbound's swarms of enemies could be considered that. Although it's less hard mode and more tedious and framerate destroying mode. At least you'd get lots of EXP and higher levels meaning that you might be able to instawin some battles earlier. I'd even say it could be useful for a 1/128 item run if it weren't for something near the end of the game requiring a certain enemy set to count.

For those who don't know, there's a pile of boxes or some other barrier that you need the glide cape to get over and you either never get the glide cape even though you normally do, or the barrier is slightly higher, I can't remember which. Either way it functions as an hour-long demo or so, maybe shorter.
>>15644803
Easier said than done. You'd have to be able to locate the anti-piracy measure in the code and then remove it via hex-editing. This would involve the use of a decompiler, which produce messy as fuck code that is nearly unreadable and has varying success based on the language it was originally compiled as. Not out of the question for a cracker but it would take significant raw time and effort. Third party DRM and copy protection is easier because they aren't directly coupled to the source code.

Game Dev Tycoon was uploaded on piratebay by devs, but it was actually a crippled version which had pirates constantly stealing all your profits, unless you developed relatively expensive copy protection measures, which also became outdated rather fast. I pirated just cause 3, and there was a mission with a name like advanced piracy or something. You had to steal some enhanced tank with an energy shield, and every time I made it to a certain bridge on the route it would crash the game. I spotted the possible drm after a few failures. However, what little searching I did didn't seem to turn up anyone else running into the same issue on a pirated copy. The issue was far more severe than any crashing before or after, but I eventually got past that area. I'm still convinced that it was some elaborate anti piracy measure, but I could be wrong.
