There has always been some idiotic misconception with shotguns, for some reason a while back some asshat after getting his shit pushed out on DOOM multiplayer decided, shotguns shouldn't have the realistic range of 45 meters and should instead be 3 fucking meters, so you couldn't hit the big side of a barn if you tried.

But it wasn't enough was it? Some *other* shit for brains developer thought, why are they so OP at close range I should change that, and boom now you got shotguns like the one in Half Life 2 that can't take down a human unless you pump him 2 times full of buckshot.

Shotguns are the close quarters devastators of the firearm world, they can be modified to fit any situation given the right circumstances, if not just get a goddamn sub-machine gun you panzy. If I had to count every time my ass got saved from the powerful blasts of a Benelli M4 shielding me from the rattles of assault rifles and the pops of semi-automatic rifles.

There are only a handful of games I would consider satisfying in terms of shotguns, but there are a load of games that make shotguns glorified pea-shooters rather than guns with the power to stop a charging rhino. Here they are:

Pretty comparable to Doom 1, ironically. They spread but typically a buckshot shell will spread into the size of about a baseball at 10 yards. The effect is therefore more like you totally shredding one guys torso instead of hitting multiple guys standing abreast. (Which again, is similar to how it works in classic Doom; only the sawed off shotgun has significant enough spread to kill a room full of dudes with a single shot, and that's because it is sawed off).

In real life, no, combat soldiers are trained to shoot center mass. The objective of war is not actually to kill your enemy, just render them incapable of resisting.

Insurgency has pretty realistic shotguns, though they aren't nearly as effective if enemies are wearing armor. Vermintide 2 shotguns are pretty mean. My favourite is Brutal Doom, where the shotgun hits HARD and the double-barrel can decapitate a Hell Knight if you're willing to risk melee range. Anything smaller will get fucked right up by even one solid hit from the pump-action.

Honestly I would say its more a horde shooter with stats more than anything and all of your stats and skills and unlocks go toward being a better and better and killing shit.

This. Doom's shotgun is a very good depiction. Doom II's super shotgun is a sawn off double barrelled to make it not just a flat upgrade of the gun. It's also the one every fucking game copies for behaviour.

Payday 2 has some solid shotguns; there's bullshit like a doublebarrelled shotgun doing far more damage than an autoshotgun, but I guess it's justified by giving you a reason to take the thing in a game where you get rushed by hordes of police. If you spec into the shotgun related skills they can become sniper rifles even with buckshot.

As much as I dislike Battlefield 4, they at least put realistic shotgun spread in the game. With a full choke on the pump action, you could still OHK people at 40m easily. For some reason they walked back on this for Battlefield We Wuz, however, with a maximum effective range of about 10m. I wonder if they'll make it realistic again for V, but who cares, nobody is going to play it anyway

The real question is which shotgun do you identify as?

For me, It's the semi-automatic Benelli M4, ready to take on any situation that's ahead of me, but if I need my resolve, I can always adapt to the given task. It is just such an attractive looking gun, sure it doesn't have the wooden furnishings of the older types, but man it looks so satisfying to look at.

It seems that when it comes to Battlefield there is a grey area with shotguns, some people say they are absolute trash, other say they are great. It is more of preference, as long as it doesn't feel like I am shooting salt at them, I am okay with it. It's pretty good. Go Ghost difficulty and Invasion spawn rates. Also don't bother with heavy armour, I know it's fancy but you would rather die a couple times going fast than crawl at a snail's pace in heavy armour, the maps are incredibly huge. I know it may seem like a tiny detail but the devs originally planned to make them larger but were forced to cut them down into smaller pieces due to their size crashing the Source engine every time they tried to load.

Usually I have a lot of difficulty picking something as my single most favorite one, but as for shotguns I can confidently say nothing has ever beaten the one in Blood for me.

Out of every man made weapon, the shotgun is by far my fave. Get one that you can easily change the barrel on to load slugs, buckshot, and bird shot and you basically got three fire arms in one. One for hunting small game, one for medium/self protection, and another for bigger game/long distance. While a rifle can out range a shotty with slugs, a rifle will need more than one round to down a bear. A slug will do it with just one.

Doom got the stopping power of a shotgun right despite having an unrealistic spread.

Indeed. The pistol was a starting master weapon if one could actually land head shots. I say it like this because I was cheap for being better than people. Almost every gun is "cheap" (((good))) when used effectively. Even that shitty pin needle gun. It's awesome when used correctly. But people aim at their enemy instead of where they're going to be with it. Even the assault rifle was good despite needing many rounds. Halo 1 was the most balanced weapon and vehicle wise out of all of them. But developers and those in charge suck ass and believe that mindless change/catering to losers is a good thing.

I killed many a people with that gun, but I also killed many a people using that gun with basically every gun. Only gun I was bad with was the needle gun, but a friend of mine was a terror with it, so I understood that it was me and not the weapon.
