Why don't modern rpgs add something to mimic PKs in mmos?

One of the best things about oldschool MMOs was the possibility of getting killed almost anywhere, any time, by or more PKs. And not only getting PKed but also losing your gear or whatever gold you had on you. Then noting down the guys name or guild and then taking revenge on them at a later time when you powered up.

This made exploring dungeons or even collecting materials really exciting, because you never knew what threat awaited you. Always had to be on your toes, had to prepare, know escape routes, look for signs of PK activity (player corpses in weird places, etc).

In traditional RPGs there is never a threat or excitement when exploring the world, because trash mobs are around your level, their AI script is elementary, and you know when you are approaching a boss or actual threat, so basically you never get ambushed or experience getting chased down by elite npcs trying to kill you.

So why don't they add a sort of "getting ambushed by powerful foes" mechanic? Even running away is exciting if done properly.

36a234  No.15623391

RPG just means "action adventure" now.

But they are doing it. RPGs and all the other games are including micro transactions.

Have you tried multiplayer of like any of thousands out right now? Or is this all about a secret fantasy to get ambushed while role playing.

< Have job and responsibilities

< Get to play once or twice a week

< After months finally get some nice gear and stuff, feel good

< Some NEET autist with no life kills your character and grabs all your shit

< All the time playing wasted because you are left with no gear and no gold

< Fuck this game, unsubscribe

I want a dothack or SAO game where you can actually play as a PKer.

It always bothered me that you could encounter npc controlled player killers in these games but you could not be one yourself. so much for immersive mmo simulation.

753798  No.15624554

Idk the only still fun mmo is oldschool runescape

And mostly cuz of nostalgia

Did you write this in Office and then copy paste it here?

06b27c  No.15624578

7th Saga almost kind of did this. You choose one of 7 playable characters to find some rocks or some shit and the other 6 characters are competing against you. They can join you but only one at a time and depending on all sorts of circumstances may or may not end up being bosses at random points in the game. It's entirely possible to go on a long journey to get to a new town and just get owned by one of the other characters out of nowhere but not have that happen at all in a different playthrough.

I agree it shouldn't be made a mindless grind like it is in most games now. I think skills accumulated by use of said gear (for example: Light armor, two-handed weapons etc.) should count more than gear stats if those are a thing, but this retarded idea that people who can allow themselves to play a game more than others is somehow unfair is just that. Retarded.

MMOs have all the potential to be amazing games, but no one wants to actually make a good game anymore. It's all skinner-boxes and time sinks.

>screenshot was taken long after the game had been ruined

As for the reason why, the answer is money.

Nerds played games in the long beginning. People who took effort to do difficult things.

In order to have more players, mmos were made easier, noobified. Over two decades of this noobification, the player base of all mmos has become 99% idiots.

Online games can never be enjoyable again when they are filled with idiots, buzzwords and self-aware terminology, buzzwords and powerplayers.

The past won't come back, bury it and move on.

you will NEVER receive such bountiful salt as you will from people who think they are hot shit but use every crutch to get an advantage. Also they may not be rp or pve fags but 9/10 they are shitters who would get dominated by someone who does serious pvp occasionally.

Because most of the time the pkers would just gather around and start murdering everyone in their wake and killing any kind of fun the game could have since its being run by literal mafia until devs go in and disband the whole thing or kill pk mechanics as a whole, see EVE and how you cant even have fun till 2 years in because of everything being run by autists who get a boner from power tripping.

Not saying pk is bad, just that it always leads to shitty outcomes

70d6a9  No.15624657

>>15624622

Indeed.

But no one would have continued to play, because they would have found the games too difficult.

What is necessary is for a truly complex and difficult game to be created, with constant death and loss and suffering. With an iq test as part of the installation process.

Make it heavily skill and knowledge based, with no stats shown, and all the mechanics hidden, and most people will be filtered.

Then you advertise it nowhere, and have it filtered out of social networks.

I don't think there will be enough players for it nowadays, because there has been almost a full generation of people born into babified imbecile level games.

Even lord British gave up on people, and moved to make casual quick-fix 5 minute games that idiots can feed money into.

7e6f81  No.15624810

That would be fun if stats and gear were plentiful and second to skill, which in MMORPGs is rarely the case. Your other alternative is making everything accessable and with as little grinding as possible. Otherwise you run into the unavoidable problem of losing weeks worth of work in the matter of minutes. That's not fun. That's not even playable. It sounds neat on paper, but in practice, leads to a disgustingly disproportionate concentration of power.

I understand the need for high stakes and danger when you encounter someone in the wild, but this isn't the answer. The only real way this could work is if your game followed a chaotic roguelike system. A good example would be IVAN. Where even with legendary equipment and above 100 strength you can still die just as quickly as a slave.

If you replaced gear or items with something like territory I don't think people would have as much of a problem. Rallying up your dudes and taking back the country sounds a lot more fun than killing a guy for taking your +1 sword of low level irrelevance.

There's an issue here where these two types of players, NEET and anti-NEET, are two different demographics. Tailoring a game solely please one type will dissuade the other side. Theoretically, both parties should engage in some form of human communication and learn to work together to a mutual goal.

That's a concept that didn't pan out too well, lol.

MUDs do everything better than MMOs ever did and they still do. They also have an impenetrable barrier against casuals.

c7d9fa  No.15626312

Because RPGs aren't a genre of skill so much as they are a genre of time investment and knowledge of the game's items, locations and enemies. Stats matter more than mechanical ability: it's part of the roleplaying aspect. However, CRPGs aren't focused on roleplaying: they're focused on exploiting the system and powergaming. By implementing powerful ambushers into the game, you simply make the player go back and grind on slimes or rats until they don't have to worry about ambushes.

There are still games out there that do this. For instance I am playing a game right now called will to live online. If you ever played stalker online it's somewhat like that, not as good as stalker but it does give the feeling of stalker with multiplayer.

You do realise shit like that is part of why battle royale is popular at the moment. That entire genre is basically "let's take the hardcore pk shit that people keep on asking for in MMOs and put it in a format which is self-contained and far less ambitious".
