What are some actually interesting metafiction games that do play with player's expectations a lot or at the very least use their genre in an interesting way? I would say that Experience 112 is an interesting take of the theme, with you being a man behind a computer screen helping the protagonist through camera systems. The Stanley Parable despite being a walking simulator is not that terrible as it basically shits on games it's type and mocks modern games for giving players the illusion of choice, even mocking games that force you to do something bad and then berate you for that. Icey is Stanley Parable with gameplay, lovecraftian themes, and significantly shittier writing but it's worth mentioning as well. Evoland was kind of cool for what it was, although it was generally really short and not that amazing in the end.

OFF is a good example as well but it's been recommended to death already.

>icey

i only remember if you walk into a corner of the area the game starts dropping the development of the game in chinese

SUPERHOT is a metafiction game that has incredibly shitty plot but pretty fun gameplay. But I guess the whole idea of the plot is "the plot doesn't actually matter because you came here for the gameplay" so I guess it fits.

>>15613123

If you try to break the game more it turns out that the game is actually a virtual environment made by a bunch of Hastur cultists created so that they can become immortal and you're killing them as bosses if you listen to the narrator but it's not very well developed and amounts to nothing in the end. The ending is also shit.

at least it's a 2d dmc/mgrr right?

Are there any good horror meta games? I know Eternal Darkness has some fun meta effects where the game starts deleting all of your save games for example, but I would like to see something even more inherently meta, like the world of the game being slowly corrupted by some evil being.

Something like that, it's a churaayzee kind of game but I can't really comment on it's quality as I fucking suck at those games

Silent Hill 4 has the main hub room get slowly more corrupted as you go through the game.

Metal Gear Solid also had some interesting meta elements like the code that you need to enter being on the back of your physical disc.

This is the second time I ever hear of Icey. This webm was the first. It's a bit unusual that I had never, ever heard of it before that.

Meta shit is usually just a means to disguise poor writing.

In Yomawari Midnight Shadows, the tutorial is the main antagonist and the final boss. I recommend you check it out yourself, but here's the rundown, as it's impossible to explain without giving away the whole game.

>Start game

>You control a little girl named Yui, you are informed her dog died and she's very sad

>She buries it, taking along another dog

>After a scene, you take control of her for a tutorial. Explains actions, nothing to it

>Arrive under a cherry tree

>"A ! will appear on top of the girl when she sees an item that can be interacted with. While the ! is displayed, perform the action with the X button."

>Okay sure, what's it gonna do, is she going to pick a flower ?

>She hangs herself

>O-oh.

>Next scene, she shows up, alive, when her friend, Haru, comes pick her up to see the fireworks

>Okay, so it was a dream I guess ?

>Scene at the fireworks, apparently Haru is going to move to another town, but she swears she won't leave Yui alone

>Together forever lil' girl sort of sap

>Whatever, let the spooks commence

>Fucked up nip ghosts come out of the woodwork and separate the two

>Haru looks after Yui while the latter gets into short easy segments basically showing where we'll be going next

>Main game's on Haru, she explores and visit the town, following Yui's steps, each chapter concludes with a crayon-drawn diary entry

>Yui has a diary too but it stays on the "my dog died" page

>Going places, little girl being scared, running from a scissor-wielding nemesis ghost, failing to find Yui, this goes on for a while

>Finally find Yui

>Haru can't see her

>Yui hangs her head low

>"I'm probably…already dead."

>itbegins.jpg

>Yui doesn't remember how she died, wants to go to the mountains to remember

>There, she starts breaking down and calling Haru's name repeatedly

>Oh fuck, she's going to turn into an evil spirit isn't she

>When Haru later finds her, yep, boss fight

>"Haru haru haru haru haru haru"

>Haru fucks off

>Eventually finds her way to Yui's dog's grave

>Finds a note

>Yui therein explains that her dad had died, her mom had gone mental, her dog bought it, and now her best friend was going away forever

>Chapter concludes, Haru's diary entry is a bunch of covered with a bunch of illegible text scribbled over, the only thing we can read is "IT'S ALL MY FAULT"

>Tutorial starts again with Haru

>It's identical to the intro, we can't leave

>Get to the tree

>The noose is there

>You can commit suicide

>You can also turn back and find another of Yui's notes not far from the tree

>In it she vows she's going to keep going, find hope, writing Haru a bunch of letters

>Now you can go back, but the tutorial text stops you every step

>Then turns red and maniacal

>while it looked like a cheap trick you're railroaded into, the intro suicide was in fact written into the story as a demonic influence forcing a little girl to fail her struggle against despair and commit suicide

>And now you're going to fight this influence because it's the final boss

>There isn't anything resembling a happy end for either Haru or Yui when you win

>At least the dog survives I guess

Would Spec Ops count as meta?

Haven't played it myself but from what I know it seems pretty meta

f58872  No.15624671

>>15624601

It's not meta, it's a deconstruction, which is to say commentary on the genre of gung-ho badass and righteous american military in dumb foreigners' land. It doesn't use anything related to the medium of video games, it just makes you control an increasingly crazy and obsessed guy who makes a bunch of stupid and extreme decisions.

certain games written/ directed by Kotaro Uchikoshi

not gonna spoil too much, just that YOU, the consciousness of the person playing the game, is the most powerful character in some of his stuff. he also plays around with narration, the fact the ds and 3ds have two screens, and that sort of thing as hints to the twists in his games

Danganronpa V3

V3 takes place in an alternate future reality to our own where the Danganronpa franchise became so successful that they made live action adaptations with REAL FICTION technology where competitors are hypnotized into thinking they are characters and kill each other to win. V3 is the 53rd entry in the franchise. During the final showdown with the mastermind, she cosplays as characters from the previous while reaction face cams made from pictures of real people are shown on screen, and comments can be heard from the audience such as "best girl" and she is my waifu etc.

>Would Spec Ops count as meta?

A little bit in the sense that the player does have the choice to try and lessen the madness the character is sinking in if you do realize what the game is telling you but it's really faint (which culminate with the line: whether you choose or not to open up on the unarmed mob that lynched your mate. The game isn't discreet about it since depending your choice you get "A Line, Crossed " or "A Line, Held" achievement. Which is "The Line" of the title.).

Experience 112 is full meta in the sense you the guy on the keyboard is the guy on the keyboard, the character on screen IS NOT the player character, the player character is locked in a security/ops room or someone that hacked the system it's left in question.

They went as far as making the game full windows compatible with multiple windows (not as an UI as a lot of pseudo hacking games do, the UI was just windows. Not sure if it's still the case in the steam version).

As a result you can't "interact" with the main character because the MC is someone that woke up in a derelict ship infirmary all you can do is access the cameras and systems and the MC is interpreting what signs you sends, assuming you're trying to help. They called it a "4th person view" game.

It's a reeeeeeally weird game, it's one of those games that can't possibly called good but somehow stay with you.

Daily reminder that they needed five fucking people to write that piece of shit.

Anyway, OP, I highly recommend Pathologic.

I'm cheating a bit with my embed since I'm linking part of the upcoming remake's soundtrack, but - Pathologic is pretty amazing.
