That's why I feel she's a well-written character. Her motivations are obvious and make sense, but they're clearly emotionally-motivated and irrational. The only part of her character that irks me is that she never sees fault in what she did, she just shows up and chews Asgore out for not doing a ton of things she knows neither of them would want to do. The only reason she ends up being "right" is because her plan failing doesn't affect anything, but Asgore's plan has actual stake to it. His plan wasn't perfect either, but at least he ends up admitting it was wrong rather than just spitefully deflecting. I still love her character, but damn that annoys me.

Difficult to put into TL/DR. Bofeng, Junko's son, was killed by a man named Hoyi, either because
a) Hoyi had usurped her previous husband and wanted to eliminate any unnecessary issues of linage with his new "wife".
b) Hoyi was a celestial archer who shot down eight suns when Earth still had nine of them, and Bofeng somehow ended up dead because of it (potentially when one of the suns crash-landed on him).
Both versions hold some merit. All we know that by the time she actually appears in a Touhou game, Junko has mindraped herself into an embodiment of raw vengeance (to the point that she actually is no longer Junko, but an entity that only responds to the name out of convenience).
Despite of the fact that Hoyi is already dead, presumably having been killed by her, Junko still holds a burning hatred for Hoyi's other wife, the Lunarian Deity Chang'e, who is imprisoned on the moon. Her repeated attempts to invade the moon and get her hands on Chang'e over the centuries have failed, but her new plan comes with a nice side dish of potential genocide against the Lunarian captors.
Oh well. At least she is still less of a pain in the ass to beat that Clownpiece.
Joke 1: Chang'e is one of very few perpetually immortals and thus Junko has no chance of actually killing her. Actually, her going after Chang'e might be the only thing to give her a vague sense of purpose because her hatred is all Junko still has left. See also: Mokou and Kaguya)

No, just the first. The legendary archer Houyi and the warlord Houyi are considered the same person in Touhou. I'm sure that she would understand that he had failed to save her son, rather than that he murdered him. It was only long after then, when Chang'e ascended to the moon that he became despotic and cruel (though in some versions he turned evil beforehand and Chang'e took the drug to prevent him from becoming immortal). Houyi went on to conquer a few lands, kill Junko's husband for his land and taking her for his own. Killing her son was the final straw that would drive her to such madness and bitter, unrelenting hatred. Since Houyi was assassinated by various people depending on where you look (his son/nephew/some of his subordinates god damn China get your shitty myths together) but never a woman, it's assumed she played a part in the plot but hadn't dealt the killing blow herself.
