The reason why RE4 has been received so well is due to the ability of aiming by yourself and not having a restricted camera.

No one could know that it would be a totally different game, that's why it went downhill with RE5.

The perfect storm of campy bullshit, genuinely creepy atmosphere, and fun shooting mechanics, with tonnes of content and re-playability is a hard thing to replicate. Dead Space got the horror down without the camp. Shadows of the Damned was okay as a much more limited version. Did anyone even play The Evil Within?

I played it for a few minutes until I realized there were stealth mechanics involved, so I returned it. That's fine for other horror games, but I don't want it in games like spiritual successors to RE4. I liked Dead Space far more than SofD. The charm was more in the latter, but the former had the better gameplay and added to it with the sci-fi tools and abilities. RE5 was half assed due to redoing development for coop because of racism whining, but still had the core of the previous game, so it's tolerable. Fuck RE6.

Max Payne had some good hit reactions.

Soldier of Fortune, now there's a fucking game about enemy reactions. Then again even call of duty 1 had enemies that reacted to where you shot them.
