Which games had a king/queen/prince/princess that actually does something befitting of their title as a ruler? Many games like to include these royal characters, but most stories don't flesh out exactly "how" these rulers govern their monarchies. For example, we know that Peach is a princess and that the Mushroom Kingdom is somehow peaceful and prosperous under her rule. It's just never explained "how" because the devs didn't gave much depth into how her royal responsibilities actually work.

Little King's Story. Corobo:
>can expand his own mansion to become a royal castle
>can order around peasants and buy rights for the lands
>has a full retinue of all the usual ministers
>even gets to pick from a bunch of really cute grills for his queen
Though if you wanna be technically pedantic about it, he's not really a King, given that he was not of noble birth and wasn't entitled by a religious figure to be so, though he did find a magical crown.

Given that the royal guard consists of Toads armed with spears, then the military must be pretty good for Peach to have nothing but ceremonial guards. Then again, there have been Bob-ombs and Shy Guys who have achieved the rank of General. Shy Guys especially seem to excell at military tactics, even fielding commandos.

The only real threat to the monarchy is Bowser and he just kidnaps Peach. He's got enough of his own shit that he never bothers trying to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom. Presumably they just don't have anything worth taking. The stars appear to be the only thing of particular value, and they're abundant everywhere else too.
Maybe the handyman is so powerful because the biggest problems the kingdom regularly has are related to infrastructure. If Mario and friends do actual maintenance work, then flight and fireballs may be needed in order to reach some structures or to kill some pests. Given the general lack of military presence anywhere and the apparent lack of crime, it doesn't seem implausible that Mario's job actually warrants greater powers than an enforcer class would need.

To elaborate a bit, the Mushroom Kingdom is arguably some kind of primitive backwater. They're using borderline druidic magic with plant/fungus power-ups while Bowser is in the industrial age with steam punk airships and the like. Unless mushrooms end up being useful as fuel, Bowser has little interest in bothering with the Kingdom itself. Instead he's focused on Princess Toadstool because of his Fungus Fever.
Whenever Mario goes on adventures, the farther he gets from home, the more advanced and sophisticated everything is. The Mushroom Kingdom likely has nothing to offer besides a few folk heroes they depend on to solve problems.

The mushroom kingdom really only makes sense when you step back and look at it from a meta-narrative prospective. The villain kidnaps princess and hero saves her format is at its core, a fairy tale narrative. Questions of infrastructure and military organization are irrelevant; all that matters is that the villain is making things bad and it's up to the hero to stop him. Hasn't someone from Nintendo said that Mario, Peach, and Bowser are like play actors?
I do like the idea of Bowser's kingdom being more technological than Peach's. Though it's worth noting that when super high tech stuff happens, it always seems to be an outlier instigating it, and they could be good or evil. E. Gadd is a good guy of course, but you also have the X-nauts. Glitzville is an entire floating city, but we don't know who built it. It's run by an evil Clubba, but most of his staff are good Toads who don't know that he was evil. The Shroobs were evil, but they're aliens so them being high tech is kind of a given. Rosalina built the Comet Observatory, that's pretty high tech. Though it also seems to run on magic, so who knows.

Makes you wonder how prosperous Bowser's Kingdom really is. If all Bowser does is pay villain for training his soldiers as the invading force (toads are all defensive forces) that his subjects have enough food or whatever to do what they want in their spare time then that's a pretty good alliance. Mushroom Kingdom is the defender and Bowser is the invader for when a foreign army choose to assault either kingdom.

I'd guess that he's doing pretty well for himself considering how many races are loyal to him. He has a pretty diverse army while the mushroom kingdom seems to just have the Toads, Humans, Yoshis (who are less allies and more trained, intelligent animals), and some outlier members of the other races who are usually on Bowser's side. And even the Toads are somewhat debatable if you believe that old bit of DEEPEST LORE about Shy Guys.

The other thing that came to mind is that perhaps the kidnappings are acting but the invasion from Bowser is real every time. I mean the population knows it's staged but it could be that these war games are how the kingdoms train each other.
Yes the violence is real. Enemies and Mario literally die. However when Mario starts a game he has 3-5 lives. Who's to say the enemies don't have 3-5 lives when playing the war games? It only costs 100 coins, and now 10 via Odyssey rules, to come back to life. And 1ups can be cultivated as you can buy them in Mario and Luigi.
The RPGs are also more serious because you only have one life in those games as opposed to your stock of lives in the platformers.

Your king, prince, and assuming you even bother with them, your princesses in Medieval 2 Total War count. Your king and prince are both going to be doing their fair share of conquering and pillaging across your many campaigns, and it's not like they just sit in the back while your trash levies go to engage the enemy trash levies. Generals are the most powerful unit in the game, so you'd be utterly wasting them by not sending them in to smash the gaggle of pitchfork-wielding plague-infested commoners where it hurts them most. Princesses can technically do shit, but they're really just diplomats who can't bribe in exchange for having a special ability that lets them secure an alliance that the AI will not gleefully betray in a matter of turns by offering her pussy to the other faction's dude. If you're feeling extra cheeky, you can use her to steal a general from another faction by seducing him, but in practice, she'll just run away to slut it up with him leaving you short a princess. I never bother with princesses too much tbh. Aside from my starting one that I always use to seduce the Pope into letting me do as I please, any others I get just sit there collecting dust, or rather as it seems to be royal equivalent of dust, fucking bad traits. I can't leave the little sluts unattended for a single turn without her picking up either the Secret Lover or the Bimbo trait. Secret lover in particular ruins the princess since I can't user her to snipe a general away or marry the dumb slut off for a free general without giving him the Cuckold trait by doing so. This is made all the worse since Secret Lover is the most fucking common retinue for a princess to get. I work so hard making the frilly little skank into a proper lady by letting her negotiate trade agreements and shit with other factions and then BOOM, Secret Lover. Nice 6 charm princess you had there assfuck. Enjoy either turning any suitor of hers into a cuck or letting her sit around somewhere where her traits will only get worse and worse until she becomes an unlovable, cockstarved wretch that the even the ugly old man from rape doujins wouldn't touch with a stolen dick.

Outside of a simulator, is there even a way you can show the depths of how a country is run and not make it really boring without having to resort to something going wrong to spice up the game? Most of the time when a game goes heavy into the politics of a nation it's only really interesting either because of some underlying mystery that's trying to be solved or something is going wrong and shit is about to go down.

Morrowind's nobles are horrifyingly accurate to life. Self-absorbed, lacking remorse, and only interested in their own ends. Many of them act as roadblocks to your ambitions, not budging on the principle that they should do nothing for no one else without what they feel is due compensation. This usually results in terribly lopsided exchanges where you're forced to perform extraordinary feats in exchange for trivial favors, and you'll do it because their station in life demands it if you want to succeed. Running through the main quest accurately portrays all the horrors of bureaucracy. The red tape, rampant corruption, cronyism, sexual exploitation, blackmail, it's all there. You scratch a lot of backs and stab some too in your ascent to power as the Neravarine, and at the end of it all when you've been crowned the Dark Elven messiah and slayer of gods, there's still selfish dipshits who would have you killed to protect what insignificant power they hold in the mortal realm.

Maybe she was the one that left coins everywhere so hardworking (or high jumping) people can grab them, gain extra lives and not have to worry about death?
There's also that weird story point from the original (NA?) SMB instruction manual about needing to rescue Peach so she can use her magic powers to turn all the brick blocks back into people that was somehow caused by Bowser. (Which makes destroying those brick blocks as Super Mario a bit more concerning).

Peach and Bowser have magical powers, the series tries really hard to bury this fact. Often they just relegate the magic of the Koopa Troop to the Magikoopas/Kamek and the Koopaling's wands.
Galaxy/Galaxy 2 shows this a bit with Bowser where his hand has that evil purple glow he uses to teleport-escape once defeated.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story is the only instance I can think of where Peach's magic was shown in any sort of cutscene, as where she uses her "Wish Power" along with Starlow's "Star Power" to levitate Bowser and thrown him out of the castle.

There's not too many even in historic video games because, particularly when children are their audience, people really don't like to confront the romanticized idea of feudal monarchs as the tyrannical despots they usually were. It's a good thing the Mushroom Kingdom doesn't appear to have knights, because when they weren't warring against the peasant population in another country they were usually beating the peasants in their own country over the head to enforce labour for their lord.

I'll do you one more: niggers couldn't into civilization because they literally sold their own people and their prisoners as slaves rather than using them to build a better society. Because slave trades with the West and the Arabs were particularly profitable, most coastal areas of Africa were basically Battle Royales with kangdomz trying to destroy other kangdomz just to reap that sweet slave cash (some exceptions occurred such as the Mali and the Ethiopians, but they're also some of the few kingdoms who westernized at some point or another rather than developing their own shit). This had a twofold effect: it depopulated vast swats of land, which the victorious kangdomz had no interest in because they were just reinvesting their slave gold into more slave hunting wars, while at the same time it prevented them from having working-age men do all that tedious city-building shit (as most jobs were related to harvesting food and hunting slaves).
