The battle system isn't that complicated, it just requires a little bit of time to get used to.
Probably paired with The Last Remnant as one of the best JRPGs of last gen, reviews complained its complete lack of coherent story but they didn't get to the end where it sort of makes sense.
It's also more of a dress up game with an RPG attached to it.

I didn't say anything about waifus? The fun comes in the challenge of the game and the insane bullshit you can pull off with the system, for what is basically a turn based game the combat is intense. Executing a well thought out string of actions and clearing a fight or recovering from a big scramble and wining is as satisfying as getting SSS rankings in DMC. You can string sick flips and shit into more sick flips and shit so long as your doing it well, if your just blowing your hero moves and achieving nothing with them then you do need to get good.

The game is shit. You have a mandatory start on a miscarriage braindead baby mode and have to complete the game from scratch 9 times to unlock the real difficulty. Through the main game you get only like just enough equipment (guns) to equip your whole party, everything else is locked behind arena mode and postgame dungeon, but there is no point doing them since nothing carries over. Gameplay itself is eh, past certain point (after figuring out the mechanics and getting an ability to dual wield) it becomes mundane and the difficulty spirals downwards. The game itself is like 60-80 hours long, cutscenes are alright, story is pointless, stage design is non-existent.

I think it does ramp up at the end. Having played it when it first came out. Forgive my memory but I think it was tough for me even at level 200. I then went into that optional final side quest dungeon to get the best weapons since I couldn't make progress at the end and I breezed through it mostly. I think it is possible to beat it without them. It's a matter of position since the bosses do some very high damaging moves so you want to get as far away from them as possible and take care of the minions quickly so you only have the boss to deal with at the end. Making sure that only 1 or 2 people would take the brunt of the damage from the boss and I getting a group heal when necessary. At that point, I think you'll develop your most abusable strategies and combos so it's not a matter of skill, but appropriate positioning so you don't get all your characters targeted at once.
